*OL Awards Season - Swanty - 04-19-2021

In this article, I'm going to take a look at offensive line performance in the ISFL. There aren't a huge amount of stats to look into when evaluating performance, but we'll do our best.

The stats we're going to look at are:
- Pancakes
- Sacks Allowed
- Penalties and Penalty Yards
- Fumble Recoveries

We're also going to take into consideration the number of snaps that the linemen played in order to get an idea on efficiency, not just the raw numbers. In order to calculate snaps, I summed together a teams PassAttempts + RushAttempts + WasSacked stats. While the sim does have a hidden 'Plays' stat, this also seems to record punting/kicking snaps, so this was a good way to eliminate those.

One element that I thought about including was 'uncredited sacks'. I wrote an article on these last season, but essentially if your OL isn't fast enough, a blitzer might get to the QB untouched and the OL won't even get credited with the sack allowed. While this is a negative, they also miss out on a chance to record a pancake, so I'm going to ignore these and assume that while a slower OL might get away with not being given sack alloweds, they'll also be missing pancakes, so it sort of evens out and doesn't make slow OLs look good.

Ever since the move to the new sim, we are starting to see human OL playing at guard/center a lot more. Given that playing at these spots results in fewer pancakes and sacks allowed, I think it kind of sucks that these players don't really have a shot at OLotY or the Pro Bowl, where the OL with the highest stats get the nod. However, I do think that given there are still so few guards/centers, we should include bots in order to ensure that the pool of eligible Pro Bowl candidates isn't crazy small.

So in this article, I'll be trying to identify the top performers at each of these 3 OL positions (and hopefully demonstrating why guards and centers deserve awards and Pro Bowl recognition!).

Enough chit chat, let's take a look at the rankings (NOTE: all stats represent the total per 100 snaps):


CENTERS

#14 - Wheezer (H) OCO - 4.2 Pancakes, 0.3 SA, 0.2 Pens, 0.8 PenYds

#13 - Stallworth (H) SAR - 4.4 Pancakes, 0.2 SA, 0.5 Pens, 3.8 PenYds

#12 - Domino (B) NOLA - 5.9 Pancakes, 0.3 SA, 0.6 Pens, 5.4 PenYds

#11 - Cartman (B) HON - 4.6 Pancakes, 0.1 SA, 0.6 Pens, 3.7 PenYds

#10 - Biddle (B) PHI - 6.1 Pancakes, 0.2 SA, 0.6 Pens, 3.1 PenYds

#9 - Quail (H) YKW - 5.5 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.6 Pens, 4.1 PenYds

#8 - Mooty (B) AUS - 5.8 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.6 Pens, 4.8 PenYds

#6 - Gorilla (B) NYS - 7.2 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.6 Pens, 3.9 PenYds

#5 - Chupacabra (B) COL - 8.9 Pancakes, 0.2 SA, 0.3 Pens, 2.3 PenYds

The second highest ranked bot Center, Chupacabra is #1 in pancakes, but has allowed a sack and a couple of penalties so far this season.

#4 - McBobby (H) ARI - 7.2 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.3 Pens, 1.5 PenYds

Our top 4 Centers are yet to allow a sack, but McBobby a couple of penalties to his name.

#3 - Cooper (H) BER - 8.4 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.3 Pens, 2.4 PenYds

Cooper, like McBobby, also has 2 penalties for higher yardage, but has consistently pancaked more often. He's top of the pancake charts among human Centers.

#2 - Riposte (H) CHI - 8.3 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0 Pens

Riposte is our top Human center. He has one fewer pancake than Cooper but more importantly, he's not allowed a single penalty, let alone a sack.

#1 - Goshawk (B) BAL - 8.0 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0 Pens, 0.2 FR

Goshawk has the same number of pancakes as Riposte (though on slightly more snaps). They get the top spot having saved a turnover by recovering a fumble, giving up 0 sacks and not conceding a single penalty.


GUARDS

#27 - Littlewood (H) HON - 6.6 Pancakes, 0.4 SA, 1.3 Pens, 8.8 PenYds

Human guards make up our top 5 at the time of writing. Raccoon is fairly average in terms of pancake numbers but has kept his QB's jersey clean. He does have 3 penalties to his name though.

#4 - Alexander (H) NYS - 7.7 Pancakes, 0.2 SA, 0.2 Pens, 0.8 PenYds, 0.2 FR

While Alexander has given up a sack, he's definitely above average in pancakes. He's also one of the cleanest guards in the game with just one penalty for 5 yards. And add to that one turnover-saving fumble recovery.

#3 - Jimbo Jr. (H) COL - 7.0 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.5 Pens, 4.7 PenYds

Jimbo Jr is only slightly above average in pancakes, but he too is yet to give up a sack. His 3 penalties will be a slight concern to Yeti management though.

#2 - Adyan (H) BER - 9.0 Pancakes, 0.2 SA, 0.3 Pens, 3.2 PenYds

Adyan leads all guards in pancakes but has given up a sack. Just two penalties puts him slightly cleaner than the average guard.

#1 - Mo (H) OCO - 8.5 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.6 Pens, 3.9 PenYds

Ne Mo is our top guard so far this season with an excellent 8.5 pancakes per 100 snaps and 0 sacks allowed. They do have 4 penalties to their name but for just 25 yards.

Hawk Red-Tailed (or is that Red-Tailed Hawk?) is our highest ranked OL bot. Despite giving up a couple of penalties and a sack, they currently lead the league with 90 pancakes.

#4 - Magic (H) CHI - 12.1 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.2 Pens, 2.4 PenYds

Our top 4 have all kept their quarterbacks jerseys clean and it's a tough call to pick between them. Magic comes in 4th due to a single penalty for 15 yards.

#3 - Buckley (H) YKW - 12.2 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.2 Pens, 0.8 PenYds

Buckley almost matches Magic and Golladay's pancake total, but his penalty cost his team just 5 yards, so he bags 3rd place.

#2 - Mellott (H) NOLA - 12.8 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0.3 Pens, 2.2 PenYds

Mellott has the most pancakes out of this elite group, but he's recorded two penalties for NOLA.

#1 - Golladay (H) ARI - 12.0 Pancakes, 0 SA, 0 Pens

Golladay is our top tackle and top OL overall, having amassed 78 pancakes and not giving up a single sack or penalty.
