* Las Vegas Legion starting a rebuild? - Kristy95 - 08-09-2017

This morning, the Las Vegas Legion and the San Jose Sabercats completed a trade. After a disappointing start to the season, the Legion are currently in last place in their division and in many power rankings with a 1-4 record. Their strategy of abandoning the season 2 draft and focusing on established players seems to have backfired and they might be abandoning that strategy.

In the trade, San Jose is acquiring Cornerback Matthew Peterson in exchange for a 2nd and a 7th round pick in the season 4 and season 3 draft. Peterson had been solid this season - with 16 tackles, 3 pass deflections and 1 interception. Peterson will help the Sabercats in their quest for their playoffs. They are currently in 2nd place in their division with a 3-2 record.

For the Sabercats that bolsters a secondary that was already decent, with J. Canton, who has 23 tackles, 12 pass deflections (first in the league) and 2 interceptions, and X. Newman, who has 19 tackles and 3 pass deflections and will likely be reduced to being the third cornerback on the depth chart now. The Sabercats have allowed the third most points among the 8 teams in the league and are hoping this will change that.

As for the Legion, where do they go from here? A rebuild seems likely, as they are struggling to win games and only got draft picks in return. After the trade, the Legion GM was quoted as saying "so it begins" - implying a rebuild is imminent. It will be interesting to see which other players will leave the Legion during this season still.

Quarterback J. Bercovici was a hot commodity in the offseason but is now struggling with 3 Touchdowns and 10 interceptions. No team will want to trade for him. The team has two good running backs, one of which could be traded to a team in need, either Savea or Cobb. Their best player is probably wide receiver N. Stormblessed, but even he is struggling this season. On the defensive side, Defensive Tackle M. Ramrio could be an option for a trade.

Whatever will happen it is clear that tides have shifted in Las Vegas and we will see an interesting change over the next few seasons. As far as this trade is concerned, I would say the Legion got a good deal. The 2nd round pick in particular will be the important one. If they can get a good player out of it, it will be worth it.

For the Sabercats, they are trying to build a team to win and certainly got better. But will the change between Newman and Peterson be enough to warrant a 2nd round pick? If they can make the playoffs this year, they certainly seem like a winner in this trade, but long term could prove to be a different story.

For Peterson itself it seems like the trade was welcomed. While I acknowledged the Sabercats own struggles on defense, they are certainly the better overall team and have a chanc at the playoffs, something he could not have done on the Legion. In a quick statement Peterson was confident in his new team and had a lofty prediction: "Glad to be apart of the Cats!! Look forward to winning championships!"

Whether or not that can be achieved will be a different question but the Sabercats are certainly one of the possible winners of the championship this year and with the league still fairly small, they are in a position to be contendors for a few years to come. We will see how it goes!

I mean, at this point it isn't really a rebuild. Just a delay in the initial building plans Tongue
