(S28) Ultimus Week - siddhus - 05-03-2021

Welcome to Ultimus Week for Season 28! You have ten days to complete the Ultimus Week point task, so the deadline will be Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 11:59PM EST.

Quick Rules:
  • You can earn up to a maximum of 10 TPE through any combination of the available Tier 1-3 tasks. Follow the word count rules specified for each tier and keep your submissions on topic.
  • Articles, graphics, or podcasts that have already been used to get media/graphics money cannot be submitted again for Ultimus Week credit (sorry – no double dipping!).
  • Podcasts can only be submitted for Tier 1 and 2 written tasks. A podcast must include 20 minutes of discussion for Tier 1 and 10 minutes of discussion for Tier 2 about the selected topic. If you make a podcast with someone else, it must be 20/10 minutes apiece.
  • As with PTs, graphics must show at least some effort (i.e. edits must be apparent, should be more than just text slapped on an image).
  • Task 29 is our affliate Task, so look there for instructions.
Tier 1: Long Form Tasks (Must be 800+ words)
Choose ONE for 10 TPE.

1. This week will see the S28 Ultimus and Ultimini races begin in earnest. How did each team arrive at the playoffs? Were there any dark horse teams that went unexpectedly far, or any presumptive favorites that fell flat? Who do you think will win the final? If you’re writing this after the finals were decided, were you surprised by the outcome?

2. Tell us about your draft class. Is there anything that makes it special in comparison to other classes? Where did your fellow draftees land, how are they doing? Did anyone turn out to be an unexpected steal of that draft based on what you know today? Do you think anyone in your draft class will become a hall of famer? If you’re new to the league, how do you think your class will do? Where do you think people will get drafted to?

3. For any team, certain players and users have gone above and beyond, shaping the legacy of the franchise. Choose any ISFL or DSFL team and create a Mount Rushmore for that team. Who in your mind are the four most noteworthy figures of the team’s history? Why does each one of your included figures deserve that recognition, and how did each of them make their mark?

4. “Sim gonna sim” is a popular expression in the league. Write about teams that have been graced by the sim gods and had amazing performances despite statistical odds, and/or about teams that were considered favorites but may have dealt with some bad sim luck that hampered their efforts. How much of an impact did it have on their season(s)?

5. The league has a rich and fascinating history, and our perspectives on it differ from person to person. In 800 words or more, describe any significant moment in ISFL or DSFL history, whether you were around for it or not. Describe the context, the significant members, and the events. What exactly made this event so famous (or infamous) and why does it deserve to be remembered? Events might include championship wins, the inducting of players to the hall of fame, or even a league scandal.

6. Write 800 words or more on something about anything in the league that interests you. It could be related to statistics, a league issue that you take seriously, or a niche part of history that doesn’t fit neatly into either of the above categories. This must be directly related to the league, so don’t wax 800 words about your team’s participation on a Werewolf server or something.

Tier 2: Short Form Tasks (Each must be 400+ words)
Choose up to TWO for 5 TPE each.

7. This task is exclusive to non-recreate rookies of the S29 class and later. In 400 words or more, how has your experience been in the league? Who have you met that has made your time here more fun, friendly, and exciting? Have you been satisfied with your player’s early start? What was it like being drafted for the first time? Do you have any comments or suggestions for the entire league that you think should be implemented?

8. With awards season upon us, make up an award for your player win for something not on the football field?

9. Through a random lottery drawing, you have been named the league's new commisioner for a day. Congrats! What improvements would you make to the league if you had the power to do whatever you wanted?

10. Write a short biography or story about your player. This could include background about how they came to the ISFL and how they’ve done so far, a story about their role in an exciting game, or anything else related to their experience in the league.

11. Write about your team’s biggest rivalry and what makes it so fierce. Is the competition founded in statistics and the team’s recent performance, or is it a rivalry that developed over time during the team’s history that would exist regardless of statistics?

12. Choose a team or player to write about that isn’t your own. What did they do well in the last season? Have they shown any drastic improvements from previous years? What could they do better?

13. Expansion Expansion Expansion! The league seems to love talking about it, but it has still not happened. Tell us why it should happen / should not happen soon?

14. Describe your player and/or team’s journey through this latest season. What were the highlights? What were the lower points? What might you have done differently? What are your expectations for next season?

Tier 3: Written/Graphics Tasks (Each must be either 200+ words or a graphic)
Choose up to FOUR for 2.5 TPE each.

15. Going to Disneyland! Who was the Ultimus Game MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disneyland. (Can be completed after the Ultimus game)

16. This task is exclusive to recreate/non-recreate rookies of the S29 class and later. The season is over and the draft is coming up. What do you bring to a team, and why should a team choose to take a chance on you next season?

17. Your team has announced that they will be laying ground on a new stadium next season. What additions would you like to see included in it. Graphic Option: Create a field / stadium design for your team.

18. Written option - which teammate of yours is the ultimate team player and why? How does this person exhibit selflessness and put the team first? Are they a great locker room presence who encourages others? Do they play an important but unappreciated role on the team which doesn't receive much recognition for awards? Graphic Option: Create a graphic of your player with your teammate who exhibits a team-friendly attitude.

19. Theres a prompt about stadium design, but now lets dig deeper. Each stadium serves some concessions for the fans coming in to watch the games. Talk us through their menu. Graphic Option: Design a menu for your team's stadium.

20. If your player had a show starring them, what would the plot be? Graphic Option: Create the cover art for your player’s show

21. Make a scouting report for any of the ISFL or DSFL draftees. Show their stats, abilities, TPE, or highlights. Written or graphic option available.

22. Now thats two seasons on the new sim. Only two of the teams that made the playoffs in the first season made it as well in the second. Talk us through how the teams have been adjusting to the sim, and if we will start seeing more consistent playoffs' competitors in future seasons.

23. You’re in charge of entertainment for the Ultimus or Ultimini half-time show. What would you do?

24. Create a billboard, magazine cover, unique trading card, or video game cover depicting a one of the league's stars.

25. If you could create a team using any active players in the league, what would that team look like? Would you build a group of all-stars to contend in the next Ultimus, or a team full of jokesters for the fun of it? Describe the roster and why you chose the players you did.

26. Imagine your current position was not available to be picked when you created your player. What other position would you have picked, and why?

27. Football is a game that has been going on for a while, loved by fans all over. But what if you were able to make some rule changes? Talk us through your new version of football, and what would be different and why?

28. What team do you think has the best branding in the league? What team do you think could use a refresh? Why?

29. Affliate PT from either SHL/PBE/GOMHL. The Weeks must match with the timeframe of this UW

Contact your local PPT Team if you are confused for any of the prompts or in general need any help with anything!

23. You’re in charge of entertainment for the Ultimus or Ultimini half-time show. What would you do?

The Ultimus is the biggest event of the year so spending the halftime show with only one singer doesn't do the event any justice. That's why you need to go with a "Later... with Jools Holland" approach. If you want people to watch you need to have multiple artists perform a single song or a pair of popular songs from many different genres to make sure every person and every football fan is represented by a band or artist they enjoy. And while no performer gets a full performance; they do get the opportunity to perform a single song that is either their biggest hit song or a new song that they hope people enjoy. I would include a Rap artist, pop artist, rock artist, and while it's not my favorite genre I still think everyone deserves representation here so a country artist as well. One year we could do current artists and the next year they could do older artists or a mix of both for the best of both worlds. This year if we wanted to use current artists I would probably select Lil Nas X for rap fans, Dua Lipa for pop fans, The Pretty Reckless for rock fans, and Luke Combs for country fans, these should satisfy fans of all genres and give a good mix for people who want to learn new bands at the same time.

9. Through a random lottery drawing, you have been named the league's new commisioner for a day. Congrats! What improvements would you make to the league if you had the power to do whatever you wanted?

If through a random lottery draw I was named the league's new commissioner for a single day I would Change the finals system and the Leagues conference system for the next Ten seasons to The AFL final eight system and league system. Now let me explain why I think this system would improve the league. Let's start off with the fact it wouldn’t change the number of teams that would make the finals. It would stay at eight teams but the big difference is the fact that one there wouldn’t be conferences or wild card matches. Now the reason for dropping conferences and the wild card games means we can have the Top eight teams and Every Team would face each other twice lengthening the season to a twenty six game regular season. now If we used the results of Season twenty eight The Finals layout would look like this.

First Arizona Outlaws (12-4-0)
Second Berlin Fire Salamanders (12-4-0)
Third Yellowknife Wraiths (11-5-0)
Forth Sarasota Sailfish (10-6-0)
Fifth New York Silverbacks (10-6-0)
Sixth Austin Copperheads (9-7-0)
Seventh Honolulu Hahalua (9-7-0)
Eighth Colorado Yeti (8-8-0)

At first you may think that nothing has really changed but this is were the AFL final eight system really kicks into gear. The system is designed to give the top four teams an easier road to the Final than the second four teams. The top four teams need to win only two finals to reach the Grand Final, while the second four teams need to win three. The two winning teams of the top four receive a bye in the second week of the playoff and then play at home in the third week, and the two losing teams play at home in the second week. The Top Four play in what are called Qualifying Games and the bottom four play in what are called Elimination Games. They are called this due the Winner of the Qualifying Games qualify to play in the Preliminary finals and the losers of the Elimination Games are eliminated from the finals.

So in Week one we would have in Qualifying game one The first overall Arizona Outlaws Verses The Fourth Overall Sarasota Sailfish, in Qualifying game two The Second overall Berlin Fire Salamanders Verses The Third Overall Yellowknife Wraiths, in Elimination Game one The Fifth overall New York Silverbacks Verses The Eighth Colorado Yeti, in Elimination Game two The Sixth Austin Copperheads Verses The Seventh Honolulu Hahalua. After those games are played The Winners of Qualifying Games get a bye week while the losers play the winners of the Elimination Games in what are called the Semi-finals. These Semi-finals may look something like this in Semi-final one The Fourth Overall Sarasota Sailfish Verses The Fifth overall New York Silverbacks and in Semi-final two The Third Overall Yellowknife Wraiths Verses The Sixth Austin Copperheads. The winner of Semi-final one faces the winner of the Qualifying game two and the winner of Semi-final two faces the winner of the Qualifying game one this is so we don’t get a repeat game of the Qualifying Games. Now the winner of those would go onto the Final game of the playoffs this is the only game that could be a repeat from any other playoff game.

17. Your team has announced that they will be laying ground on a new stadium next season. What additions would you like to see included in it. Graphic Option: Create a field / stadium design for your team.

The additions that i would like to see add to The Luchadores new stadium next season would be some of the following things. Behind the End zone I would have two large lovely grassy hills for people to picnic on the area would be limited access and given to random family fans. The family would also get a Luchadores picnic and a team signed ball. Another addition i would add is a few areas around the stadium that would be Sensory Inclusive this would make the stadium and team a more welcoming place to people and families that have someone on the autism spectrum. The Rooms would be designed to help a person with autism who may be hypersensitive to changes in sight, touch, smell, taste and sound; The sensory stimulus could be very distracting or they could result in pain or anxiety. There are other people who are hyposensitive and may not feel extreme changes in temperature or pain. Each of these has implications for making an autism friendly environment. The areas would also be designed and organized to be autism friendly. It would be important for areas to be decorated with serenity in mind, like painting the walls with calming colors. Thick carpeting and double-paned glass help to minimize distracting noise (e.g. noise pollution).

19. Theres a prompt about stadium design, but now lets dig deeper. Each stadium serves some concessions for the fans coming in to watch the games. Talk us through their menu. Graphic Option: Design a menu for your team's stadium.

26. Imagine your current position was not available to be picked when you created your player. What other position would you have picked, and why?
If making a a safety wasn't on the table when creating, I'd probably go with cornerback. I was between those two positions when creating so decision probably would've been easier since I wouldn't have to decide. Why cornerback? Well my primary goal was to chase after special teams records, specifically kickoff return yards and kickoff return touchdowns. My preference was always to play on the defensive side of the ball so that really left two position groups with archetypes that were viable in the pursuit; safety with the centerfielder archetype and cornerback with the man to man archetype.

Both archetypes had speed capped at 100 which is something that helps with kick returns. If I had to pick between making sacks and making interceptions, I'd lean towards interceptions as there's the added element of possibly returning an interception for a touchdown. While you could strip sack, recover the fumble and make your way into the end zone, the likelihood of all that coming together seems like you'd need a whole lot more luck. If you don't get interceptions there's always PDs that you could possibly rack up and with the new sim you can really rack those up if you line up as CB1. Although kick returns aren't something we're likely to see new records in with the new sim, the cornerback position seems like a decent position to be in.

22. Now thats two seasons on the new sim. Only two of the teams that made the playoffs in the first season made it as well in the second. Talk us through how the teams have been adjusting to the sim, and if we will start seeing more consistent playoffs' competitors in future seasons.
New sim has been interesting especially from a testing standpoint. With the old sim, it was pretty much a give that home field advantage would play a pretty major role in likelihood of coming away with a win. Predictions were basically, pick home team and not much though went through it. Some teams have a method of which they use to test, but for the most part bulk testing that existed with the previous sim isn't something that was really being done with the possible exception of a couple of teams.

Away team penalties are something that appears to favour the home team but with that being said there's a chance for an away team to walk away with a win without being deemed unlikely or a fluke. Through two season, there hasn't been a strat submitted for Honolulu that was below 50% which is somewhat of a surprise since there are some areas where we're lacking in comparison to our matchups. While you have consider the small sample sizes (relative to what was being done in the old sim) in conjunction with the fact that opposing teams are likely to make changes of their own, it has certainly been nice to see that you can be competitive on the road as well.

In terms of the standings a bit of a shakeup has occurred with the ASFC with OCO and SJS not fairing as well as they had prior to the sim change. A bit of a surprise but their good teams with good users so won't be surprised to seem them back on top soon. As far as Honolulu goes, the switch has seen back to back winning seasons with the team's first playoff experience in Season 27. So it's been pretty good for us so far. With Gragg9 release a method for testing publicly (awesome btw) maybe things will shuffle around some more.

RE: (S28) Ultimus Week - WildfireMicro - 05-03-2021

Tier 14)

Obviously this season did not go quite as we hoped for the Philadelphia Liberty but that is OK. We knew we were still in the midst of a soft reboot and we were rocking with a rookie QB. Ultimately we went 6-10 again matching last seasons record. Like last season it was a season of crazy upsets and heartbreaking losses. We had plenty of highlights and plenty of low points as well. Our year started out with 3 straight losses until we managed a close win against Baltimore. One of our biggest highlights was our big last second kick return victory over Chicago which had our whole team freaking out and going crazy in the locker room. Add in our blowout win against Baltimore and it was a very happy day in the locker room.

Of course we then got completely embarrassed by Sarasota with them scoring 69 points on us which took it's toll on our optimism. It was one of the most embarrassing losses we could have had especially with them just having to score that many points on us. This started a long 5 game losing streak that includes a close loss against Colorado and another close one against Honolulu. It finally came to an end when we best Baltimore again, and then we had the upset our morale needed with a great win against Yellowkinfe. They are a playoff team so this win was great to see.

We then lost by ten points against Berlin which was disappointing. We then had another massive upset against Arizona where we won by just one point. Then after a frustrating loss against the Yeti we had another massive upset against Sarasota where it looked like we just did a surrender field goal until we forced a fumble on the first play of the ensuring Sarasota drive. One touchdown and one sack later we manage to hold on for a huge win. We finished our year with a loss against Chicago. I honestly don't know what I'd so differently in this season because a lot of it was out of my control.

As for next season I think we can at the very least improve our record from this season. I don't know if we will make the playoffs but with our call-ups and a lot of our core improving I hope we can get 8 or 7 wins. But we will see what fate and sim luck holds for us

Tier 19)

The Philadelphia Liberty's Taco Bell Stadium haa some of the best concessions you will see in the ISFL. Starting with our popcorn vendor who will serve many different types of popcorn including caramel and cheddar. We then transition to the vegan menu with some of the best fried green onions you will taste with a special batter that includes a milk substitute. The vegan patrons have been extremely grateful for the inclusion of it especially for a Stadium owned by Taco Bell. Speaking of Taco Bell they or course have a couple of booths there and luckily there are plenty of bathrooms available for later.

Of course there is also the Philadelphia Cheesesteaks. We have plenty of booths for it and usually the more expensive ones are the most authentic because of the cost of the ingredients. Both Sonny's Famous Steaks and Jim's South Street provide the best steaks and it's gard for the fans to choose which one is the best between them. You have fans clamoring for both sides of that argument. Finally there are plenty of places to get favored shaved ice and ice cream and even special punch drinks. The ice cream and shaved ice are of course not available during the colder months for obvious reasons.

Tier 28)

In terms of which team has the best branding I am obviously a bit biased to my team the Philadelphia Liberty. The classic colors of red white and blue are perfect for a team about America, even if the white is more of a cream white to me. And I personally love our new logo. If I had to choose a different team then my own I will say that Sarasota has one of my favorite color schemes in the ISFL and I love how they didn't just copy the Miami Dolphins colors. For the DSFL the London Royals have one of the best overall combinations of logo and team colors in the league but again I might be biased.

As for the ISFL teams that might need a branding touch up, the Orange County Otters have had the same logo for a long time. I know it's am overall classic logo but I personally think it might need an updating. OCO's colors can stay the same though because I like the orange. And maybe San Jose as well. For the DSFL I would have said Dallas if they still had thier old logo but they have since updated it and it looks way better now. And I personally don't know any other teams that could use a change.

10: In 2037 Duke University signed a Wide Receiver 2 Star Recruit Mike Hunt from Chargers Catholic High School in Flint, MI. He was not heavily recruited by many Division I teams, the biggest Division I school that looked at him was Duke University. He has been a lifelong Duke University sports fan, and he always wanted to attend school their and he got a Full Ride Scholarship for Academics but also wanted to go to Duke to play football. So, Coach Hill asked Mike if he was interested to be recruited by Duke, of course Mike was excited. Mike Hunt has never been that excited in his life and he wanted to make this opportunity and become the great wide receiver in Duke’s history. When he was a young man he has always had the dream to play wide receiver, he was never tall enough to play, so he had to play middle linebacker in middle school. Finally, his freshman year of high school he grew from 5 foot 4 to 6 foot 3! He grew so much that he went from playing defensive lineman to Wide Receiver, he only played a few games in the eighth grade. But he went on to practice with the Wide Receivers for tryouts. The varsity coach put him up against the best corner on the team who went on to play college football for the University of Ohio State. Mike Hunt and the corner lined up and it was a simple go route, with his amazing speed he blew by the corner had a 3-yard cushion and the QB coach threw a perfect pass in the hands of Mike Hunt and he would catch it and run it into the endzone. The way Mike Hunt destroyed the future 5-star prospect cornerback, had the varsity coach thinking about this young man playing on the varsity team. So, Mike Hunt was asked to… do it again. Mike lined up again and ran a curl route and went 5 yards was going so fast he planted but the corner kept running and left a massive 5 yard cushion and when Mike Hunt caught it, he turned up field juke left and the cornerback went left, but Mike Hunt went right and ran it in for a touchdown, everyone who was trying out circled around the two and went nuts after Mike Hunt caught it and juked the cornerback out. He was so excited and then the coach came up to him and asked if he wanted to try out with the varsity team. Well of course Mike Hunt said yes. Mike Hunt was so excited to go get his football career started on the varsity team, he wanted to be the very best in the game.

The expansion question is a good one, and probably one that’s best handled by individuals who have spent more time paying attention and being an active participant, but I suppose a more casual player’s viewpoint is important as well.  The idea of expansion is great – and I think basically everyone would be in agreement with that sentiment.  Who doesn’t love more?  More chances for playing time for younger guys, more chances to negotiate for more unique or valuable contracts, more storylines, etc.  I guess the ultimate question becomes – where is the tipping point in that you end up with a bunch of bots, inactive players, and crap rookies running all over the field just to get the games in?  Offensive lines are already peppered with bots all throughout the league.  The other part of that is, what are the numbers for new recruits?  Personally I’ve only been here for around 6 months or so, so recruiting worked for me, but I wonder how many new members keep signing up, season after season.  If the numbers have stagnated and/or declined, then maybe it’s best to not dilute the league by adding more teams, with less new members.  I’ve also had a tremendous experience with the Philadelphia Liberty leadership.  This new management has been fantastic, but I’m not aware of how rare that is, or if every team has really solidified its locker room.  If the league is still having trouble in that area, then obviously new franchises, which require new leadership, would just end up being a chore rather than a benefit.

Ok so there are the pitfalls.  However, ultimately my opinion is that expansion would be a boost for the league.  My primary reason for this belief is that there are too many star players that have a stranglehold on their positions and playing time.  Basically, there is enough talent to go around.  Just clicking through a few rosters – I see the running back positions with 98 overall starts and backups at 91 overall.  I get it that teams want to have succession plans, but without injuries, there’s just these rosters filled with talent that don’t see much playing time.  Again, I’m cognizant of league dilution being a potential problem, but I like and encourage the idea of teams having to play more rookies, or less “complete” builds.  More franchises also gives more people the opportunity to play quarterback.  So I say YES! Let’s expand by at least two teams.

(410 words)

Well another season done, and another less than stellar regular season performance from your boy, Honky Tonk Haywood.  While HTH did pull down the opposing team’s quarterback 3 times, and did tally a safety on the year, the rest of Haywood’s counting stats weren’t exactly terrific.  For qualified defensive tackles, Honky Tonk finished fourth to last in total tackles.  This is a crazy number for several reasons – namely in the HTH is the only Liberty defensive tackle to record a tackle, yet he’s barely above a few players for total tackles even though those players all share that leaderboard with a DT teammate.  Moreover, the Liberty did not have one player in the top 20 for total tackles.  It should come as no surprise that the Liberty finished dead last in the league for total team tackles.  That in itself seems to imply there were plenty of opportunities out there for Haywood to rack up some stats, but it wasn’t the case.  To add insult to injury, Haywood did not record a tackle for loss on the season.  While it could and probably should be considered a disappointment for the big fella, it is important to acknowledge how young and inexperienced this entire Liberty defense is.  While strides have been made, the backbone of the defense is being built through season 25 draftees such as Honky Tonk and fellow draftees Gary Goodman, and Tex Wrecks. Even the team’s defensive captain and leader, Jimi DeSoto, is a Season 25 draftee with 2 years experience in the ISFL.  The results, while encouraging for the future, has meant a lot of overmatched young players giving up big plays.  While I hesitate to make too many excuses for Honky Tonk Haywood, it’s tough to pile up the tackles and sacks when teams are moving the ball downfield in 6 plays for a touchdown while the BOT across from him is still capable of keeping him out of the backfield.  Hopefully next year we’ll see a big jump from the defensive unit as a whole, which should go a ways in helping Haywood’s play; however, it feels like this team may be another 2 to 3 years away from really impacting the league standings.  But until that time, I’ll still be shamelessly watching the streams to see if the big fella managed to squeeze in a few tackles and a sack while the Liberty lose in the most sim-sadistic ways possible.
