Nirvana Song Analysis of the Week:
"Sifting"
Ooh this one is a plodder. I love how the old Nirvana drummer plays like an ugly caveman. I can't remember what his name is, but imagine if Dave Grohl played on this track. It'd be certainly more energetic and lively. Probably catchier too somehow. But it wouldn't necessarily be better, I just love how amateurish and simple the drums are. Gives their earlier stuff a distinct sound, and leaves more room for everything else. The chorus(?) sounds like something I often say when my roommate's dog and I are in the kitchen at the same time. Oh man the feedback during the solo slash instrumental break is really great. Is that all guitar or is that Kurt going "oooooo"? Spooky vibes.

Nirvana Song Analysis of the Week:
"Been a Son"
Love this track! It is interesting that when I first borrowed my friend's copy of that eponymous greatest hits CD, I kinda considered this song a skipper. This one and Lithium tbh. But no I've realized years later this song is fantastic. Very upbeat and melodic, especially for their early era. Probably has some of Kurt's best lyrics. Simple but conveys a lot. And those backup vocal harmonies definitely foreshadow a motif used throughout Nevermind. Also is that a distorted bass solo?! I never actually noticed what that was before. This track doesn't overstay its welcome either. A nice trim 140 ticks.
