Nirvana Song Analysis of the Week: Ahhh Verse Chorus Verse. I actually expected a different song until the video started. Forgot about this one. Back when I was a teenager, I asked for and got the With The Lights Out boxset for Christmas. I definitely thought it was actually just their 3 main studio albums in one bundle, had no idea that it was a bunch of demos and b-sides and unreleased stuff. That disappointment didn't last long. I fell in love with this collection, and especially Disc 2, which features VCV. This song epitomizes Melancholy to me. Ok but real quick: which song features a kinda similar power chord progression? Is it Drain You? I'm not sure and I don't wanna look it up. But yeah I love the upbeat yet sad mellow vibe of this one. One thing I did not realize is that this song has lyrics! I assumed he was sorta mumbling some of the lyrics in this recording cuz they weren't fully fleshed out yet. I mean I think he's flubbing the vocal a bit now that I listen to it closer. Crazy that this was basically a Nevermind b-side. Ohhhh......

Nirvana Song Analysis of the Week: "Dumb (Unplugged Version)"

First off I'm a little surprised how little this one differs from the studio version. For some reason I thought the studio version was heavier. Anyway yeah this song is definitely one of the best lyrically. Even 13 year old me, when I first heard the song, could relate to having that nagging feeling that I'm stupid, but settling for being dumb and happy in the present moment. That was my simple interpretation anyway. Also some really outstanding imagery in "skin the sun/fall asleep"...and "soothe the burn/wake me up". I really love how Kurt slyly borrows the vocal cadence of Polly for that little bridge part. In fact this song is kind of a sister song to Polly. I haven't even mentioned the cello in the chorus. I'm guessing that's a cello, I dunno. It's perfect and really actually elevates the song from average to gorgeous. I know people just assume this song is drug related, maybe because Kurt almost literally mentions sniffing glue, but I personally get an almost Buddhist vibe out of the lyrics and sound.

Nirvana Song Analysis of the Week:  DOUBLE FEATURE!!!
"Drain You - Live"

Hey cool this is a covid fundraiser video! Of course, get your vaccines if you haven't already and all that, but why the hell this video? Because it's a virus and it drains you?! Interesting choice, WHO, interesting choice. Also I seriously love the go go dancers in the vid. We went over earlier how Verse Chorus Verse takes a bit of this power chord progression. Although I suppose it's the other way around. The bridge section gets the obvious Sonic Youth comparisons. Honestly I see certain bands out nowadays that get shit for wearing their influences on their sleeves. But like this is basically Kurt Cobain wearing a Sonic Youth shirt in audio form. What's wrong with that? Especially if it's done well, and I feel like this is tasteful. But I really love this chorus. Almost the opposite of what Nirvana is known for; the quiet verse LOUD CHORUS quiet verse schtick here is reversed. The chorus is kinda subdued. It's really the harmony vocals between Kurt & Grohl that make it memorable. Their voices go so well together, it's a shame they didn't both sing in unison in enough songs. Just like how it's fun for me to listen to all the Beatles' solo efforts and reimagine them as 70's Beatles songs, I do love listening to the Foo Fighters' 1st two albums and imagine them with Kurt and Krist playing alongside. They would've been even more amazing then they already are. Ok not gonna lie, I never read the lyrics for this song until now. That chorus is so good. I always heard the 'back and forth', but this song is talking about kissing/making out in the most primal way. Love it. Gonna think about chewing meat next time I make out with a gal now.

"The Man Who Sold The World - Live"

Yup, just like an earlier song we talked about ("Been A Son"), I never heard this song until that Nirvana Self-Titled Greatest Hits comp came out. This was such a good addition, especially as a final track. Kurt always made choice selections for his covers. Honestly it's actually kinda amazing how boldly this guy decided to cover songs he loved. Like there is no other band I can think of, besides I suppose Zeppelin in a way, that released so many covers. Hearing this song as I write this, I cannot help but reminisce about junior high, which probably really really really ages me. Again when the song was released on CD, not this live vid. I don't think i'd ever heard an ascending bass/guitar line like this one in the chorus. So oddly gorgeous. Wouldn't be surprised if Kurt chose this song after becoming the biggest band in the world and feeling like he sold out.
