Double Media for this please

Following on from my article on regression and how each team was looking going into this season, I will now look at how they drafted in the S29 ISFL draft. We will be able to see who plugged the holes on their roster and who is going to have to make more moves to fend off the inevitable regression collapse.

Arizona Outlaws
[Image: pc4qYt2.jpg]
The Outlaws only made two picks in the S29 draft. With the first of those picks, they selected linebacker Marcus Jones at pick 1.12. Jones should be able to come in and replace Galf Wilf’s spot on the roster. With Stansilaw Koniecpolski and L’Gazzy Burfict already on the roster, Arizona has some real quality at LB. Logan Sarrasin should continue to develop making this LB group formidable in the next few years. Marcus Jones has been earning very well, so Arizona should be excited about this group. They also picked up RB Fitted Cuddles in the 3rd round. Cuddles will come in to back up Thorbjornsson when Nakamura must dip out in a couple of seasons. This pick was made with one eye on the future, and I think Cuddles will spend a few seasons in the DSFL waiting for a spot to open. The area of need I highlighted in my last article that was not addressed was cornerback. Desmond Scarlett has retired this year, so they have lost a CB. They did have four on their roster though, so I imagine they will be fine running with Triplet, Crunk and Gillion. The rest of their regressing players still have a few years left in the tank so there is nothing for the Outlaws to worry about in the near future. I would imagine they will try to keep their draft picks for next year and look to get a future replacement for Thomas Passman at WR, Wesley Eriksen at safety and possibly o-line to take over from Calvin Golladay.

Austin Copperheads
[Image: 7TTBxfb.jpg]
The Copperheads had no first-round pick in this draft and so their first choice was late in the second round when they took WR Ivan Toastavich. With Jeeta entering regression this year and Videl-San and Howlett both about to start regressing in Season 30 it makes sense for Austin to grab another young wideout to pair with Bayley Cowabunga. They have no immediate other holes in their roster, but both edge rushers and one of their top LB do start regression this year. The Copperheads will need to find answers to these positions and also find an eventual replacement for Friedrich Vequain, but they still have time. Their lack of high draft capital left them having to grab BPA in this draft. They took promising kicker Jean-Jaques Leroy in the 3rd round which could prove to be a steal, but they already had Bloomfield and Gluteus Maximus on the roster. It seems excessive to be carrying three kickers, but I imagine they liked how well Leroy was earning TPE over the other available options at that point in the draft. They will leave this draft probably pleased with what they have and determined to have more draft capital for next year when they will start to really feel the squeeze on regression. 5 of their players from season 23 plus the 6 from season 22 will lose them a shit ton of TPE from their starting line-up. Hopefully, it will not be too late for them to start retooling their line-up.

Baltimore Hawks
[Image: LPAGyw0.jpg]
The Hawks waited until the second round to grab their replacement for Luke Skywalker and managed to snag Gimmy Jarropolo Jr.at 2.26. In a bold move assuming no other teams would steal him away, the Hawks have landed their quarterback of the future. He will probably need a couple of seasons in the DSFL before taking over the reins of the franchise, but he is one of the top earners in his draft class which bodes well for Baltimore’s future. They strengthened all over the field grabbing DT Will Smyth to pair with fellow DSFL DT Beefcake Johnson. This should ensure they have a solid DT corps for the foreseeable future with Annastesia just beginning to regress and David Ramczyk being another young up and coming DT from S28 who is already on the ISFL roster. The only other area where the Hawks were facing some regression was at CB with Ben Stackinpaper. They found his replacement with the 3rd overall pick in Lip Gallagher. They also got some more depth at RB with Dante King and at safety with Darius Severance. Overall, the Hawks did what they needed to and filled all the potential holes in their roster whilst adding competition in other areas. If they all keep earning well their players should all start to peak in two or three seasons, and we could see a resurgence from the Hawks. They are a team making moves in the right direction.

Berlin Fire Salamanders
[Image: HnD8upK.jpg]
In my last article, I proposed that Chevvy Bronko could be on their way to Berlin. As it turned out he went 5th overall but my prediction was not completely off as the Fire Salamanders took TE Gronko Muerto at pick 1.14. Clark Boyd is still a few seasons left from having to retire, so picking up Muerto is a great pick for the future. Muerto will have time to build his TPE whilst Boyd continues to dominate in the ISFL. Sources have said that Boyd cannot be replaced, merely imitated. Only time will tell if Muerto can replicate Boyd’s production, but the gauntlet has been well and truly laid down. With their second-round pick, Berlin grabbed DT Ilove Hotsalads. Both their defensive tackles are starting to regress this year so Hotsalads was a great pick to help them secure the future of their line. They will need further investment in future drafts but rising star Hotsalads is a great start to the revamped line. The Fire Salamanders also took a kicker at the end of round 3 selecting Izuku Campbell. Danny King is a solid if unspectacular S23 kicker, who will probably soon be replaced by Campbell. Berlin was not able to get any linebackers which are one area where they are starting to age. De Ville has only started regression this year and McCringleberry will begin their next season, so they have some time before it becomes an issue. They are still holding three DSFL QB’s so there is potential for them to stock up on draft picks through a future trade to a QB needy team. For now, it looks like Berlin will be pushing for playoff places again this year.

Chicago Butchers
[Image: t8BZ0qe.jpg]
I said the Butchers were in trouble pre-draft, but they made some moves and now I’m not so worried for them. They managed to get QB George O’Donnell’s successor by picking up Kazimir Oles Jr. in the second round. This was a major area of need and I am sure they will be delighted grabbing their next franchise QB. In back-to-back picks, they also found their replacement for RB Baby Yoda by taking Rejoignez Lordesombre. Madison Hayes will probably be their main back once Yoda leaves, but they will need Lordesombre to be part of a one-two punch with Hayes in the near future.RB Keynel McZeal has stalled in their TPE earning and is due for regression soon so getting some fresh blood at RB was a big need for Chicago. Another area of need Chicago addressed was the CB room where they drafted Hououin Kyouma. Both their top cornerbacks are facing regression with Shields due 20% and Firestorm-Fjord due 25%. Kyouma has not earned much TPE only having 80 so far, but the Butchers obviously seen potential in them grabbing them in the 4th round. This position still needs some work as Kyouma seems more of a project than a blue-chip prospect and they need to replace two of their top CB’s. I would imagine they will need to try and find an answer soon. One possibility could be switching one of their linebackers to CB as the team has a very good linebacker corps and they have Dexter Hall in the DSFL who is pretty much ready to be called up. They could possibly switch to a 3-4  defense and utilise Hall there which they might have to as they are also soon to be losing 2 of their defensive linemen. They have one replacement for that d-line in the form of Ambacus Fitted the DE they drafted in the third round. Fitted looks good and should be able to take over from Von Hayes in three seasons when regression starts to really hit hard. It does leave them without a DT unless they invest in that next draft. The switch to a 3-4 defense makes sense giving the players they have now. Another player they grabbed in the third round was Dick Thickum. Thickum is a relatively low earner too, only having 83 TPE but Chicago has seen the potential and grabbed some extra help for their stacked o-line. Thickum will take some years to develop and hopefully step into the Mo “Mamba” Magic sized hole left when Magic retires. The one area the Butchers missed out on was TE. Tree Gelbman is starting to regress now losing 25% of their TPE and they have no replacement lined up. Gelbman is a high earner so could handle losing TPE for another couple of seasons. The Butchers are wise to deprioritise that position with their limited draft capital and focus on other areas for now. Overall, they got the QB and RB of the future and added strength on their defensive line. They have taken some risk by not adding in other areas of need but hopefully, they can address that in the next draft. I still think in a season or two they will struggle to stay competitive as they transition, but I suppose that only means higher draft picks.

Colorado Yeti
[Image: lBoRDD0.jpg]
So going into the draft the Yeti had holes at o-line with Jimbo retiring and DE with Blackstone hitting 25% regression. They managed to pick up Emperor de Pengu in the second round so that is that sorted. Pengu is a high earner having 218 TPE already so should help Colorado protect QB Caliban and create some lanes for Gilbert at the end of his career and for Manhattan Project’s in the future. In the first round, they picked up linebacker Sam Squanch. Squanch has already reached 289 TPE and should be a star in the future. He will be a great addition to an already stacked LB corps. De Pengu, Murder-Moose and Rucker are all still pretty young so Squanch may have to wait for their chance to get first-team reps unless they change to a 3-4 defense. Adelie de Pengu will be the first to regress being from the S23 class, but they will be a high TPE player for the next two or three seasons still. They are losing DE Blackstone soon, as they are from the S21 class and DT Rikiya has also begun regression. The Yeti will need to address that in next year’s draft or in free agency or a trade. They are still needing some WR depth as both their top receivers start regressing this year. They also picked up Beau Novak in the 4th round. Novak will be a player for the future as they only have 58 TPE so far but Colorado obviously believed in the talent. Frank Michell is an s24 TE so Novak will need to learn how to earn quickly in order to compete with Michell for a spot. Michell won’t start regressing for another two seasons. At that point, Novak should be ready to take over and the Yeti can transition seamlessly.

Honolulu Hahalua
[Image: EcyOJWw.jpg]
With their first-round pick, the Hahalua picked up linebacker David Frank. They also took linebacker in the second round grabbing Teddy Murphy. Both these guys have over 200 TPE already and should be some really great players. The thing is Honululu already have 3 very good LB on the roster. Two of them are S23 so will start regressing next season. Murphy and Frank should be able to take over from Kackpoo and Porter in season 31/32 when regression gets too much so Honolulu has sorted their LB corps for the foreseeable future. With their next pick, they took Freddy Bly a 248 TPE kicker. This was a much-needed pick as their kicker Venus Powers is facing 30% regression this year and will surely retire next year. Shrewd signing from Hahalua there and now they have a high earning kicker locked down for years to come. They picked up some more RB depth with their last pick taking Noel Akerele in the 4th round. Akerele will be more of a project having only 58 TPE at draft time but Honolulu already has Ayers, Cobra Kai, Hex and Miglaskems at RB so Akerele has time to develop and take over as a depth piece in the future. Honolulu has a lot of players currently in the DSFL and is looking really healthy for the future. The only position they will need to address will be safety with Shawn Dawkins beginning regression this year. They could also do with getting another WR as Podolak retired leaving them with only Kendrick-Watts and Salamanca for rookie QB Christ Jr. to throw to. Hahalua area a team in transition but they have a healthy pool of young talent to develop and take over and hopefully they should have a smooth transition into the next phase of their franchise.

New Orleans Second Line
[Image: JQvwMKx.jpg]
In the first round, NOLA grabbed the top receiver in this class in Quinton Crash. They will be hoping Crash can go on and have a career like the legendary Ed Barker who is facing 25% regression this year. This moved helped the Second Line complete their WR corps for the future with Crash lining up alongside Bodenhammer and Spencer. The next area of need addressed by NOLA was at CB where they took promising young CB Sir Peter Jackson. Jackson will be in line to replace Witten when he finally calls time on his illustrious career. Witten has only started regression this season, but his decline should coincide nicely with Jackson’s development into a starting ISFL CB. It’s almost as if it was planned. With the second pick of the 3rd round, NOLA grabbed linebacker Elliot Hord. They have been needing linebacker help as strong safety Wadham has been playing there this season when they used a 3-4 defensive formation. With Blaylock soon to retire they will not be able to rotate Wadham in as an LB anymore so Hord will be a great addition to the Second Line. Blaylock will remain this season as a rotational player at free safety, luckily his successor is already on the roster with Shuffleboard showing last season that they are ready to come in and fill his shoes. With their last pick, NOLA added some competition in the RB room by taking Noah Johns. Johns will compete with Taipan Pete and Remus Roman for the vacant spot on the roster left by Botty McBotterson’s retirement. Legend of the Tight End position Austin McCormick retired this season and so New Orleans will need to find a replacement for him. There are rumours of a position swap or potentially a big free-agent signing but NOLA will need to act fast to try and find a successor to McCormick. New Orleans managed to sort the long-term future of a few positions of need in this draft, but they will still be on the lookout for a kicker. Pseudo QB might last another season with the Second Line, but they could also make some moves in free agency.

New York Silverbacks
[Image: HUkQl2V.jpg]
With their first pick of the draft, the Silverbacks picked up Tight End Joey Marston in the early second round. To me, this seems like a strange move. Maybe they just went for best player available because they have Wilkinson already at Tight End and they are only S27. Possibly one of the Tight Ends are going to switch positions and getting a 234 TPE player in the second round is always welcome so I guess this is a 'wait and see' situation. With their other picks, they took two WR Janis Lux and Caitlyn Catowize. Sean Snyder has started regression and star WR Kingston will start next year so New York needs some depth for the future at that position. Good pickups for the Silverbacks. Their defense is left with a lot of holes though. DT Mcdavid is at 25% regression without a replacement ready. Mendoza is only starting to regress and should last some more seasons, so I think they will be ok at that position if they take CB in one of the next two drafts. Another team that has a Kicker/punter on their last legs and will need to make some plans to find a new one. Outside of DT the Silverbacks team is just nearing its peak and seems sorted for the next few seasons at least. They have some high earning players in DSFL so watch out for them in the years to come. Once they sort DT out, they will be looking really good.

Orange County Otters
[Image: WlhlCOJ.jpg]
Orange County had a lot of picks in this draft and was looking to find value in the late rounds to help fill the many upcoming holes on their roster. In the first round, they took Suggs Upshar cornerback from the Portland Pythons. Upshar is an earning monster with 293 TPE already but OCO already has Bruckner and Nzeocha waiting in the DSFL. Upshar was probably the best player available on their board which must be why they took the plunge. They only have two CB on the ISFL roster before any callups and with Booker starting to regress there is a need for the Otters to invest in CB. In the second round, they managed to fill a need whilst taking a great player and picking Zack Dinozzo the Tight End. Dinozzo will replace Heath Evans in a few seasons when they retire, and the Otters have got the TE position locked down with this pick. In the third round Orange County grabbed CB Rean Schwarzer, DE Will Stein and OL Yetiman Beardstein. Schwarzer is added to the other 3 DSFL CB’s the Otters currently have. Nzeocha is on 177 TPE despite being the most experienced of the players so possibly they will not end up on the roster, or at least take some time before they get to start. Orange County feels like they need to address the CB position and have done so with this pick and they should be sorted there now. They also picked up DE Will stern who should hopefully be a solid replacement for regressing Rapid Eagle. Stern has earned 101 TPE so far, so they are not a massive earner but given a couple of seasons they should be able to come in and do a good job for the Otters. Yetiman Beardstein will be added to the O-line that the Otters seem to be heavily investing in. They are losing Future trunks soon but still have Wheezer, Mo and Rico-Shea at the position who should make a solid o-line in the upcoming seasons. With their last pick, they grabbed another DE Malik F. Doom. They are a project player and Orange County will hope they can develop into a solid player. Rotticus Scott is losing 25% this year at DT, Goat Tank has switched to RB and DE Eagle is also hitting 25% regression. Possibly one of their DE could switch over to DT and the Otters could use a 3-4 defense. They did not manage to find the QB of the future this season, but Ramza is only beginning their regression journey. It is worrying that they do not have a QB in the DSFL earning and developing. If they take one next year or the following, they might have a season where they have to start a relatively low QB. Berlin Fire Salamanders might be interested in this situation as they have stockpiled QB’s and could maybe swoop in with a trade offer to OCO when their QB situation gets desperate.

Philadelphia Liberty
[Image: qfP2l0O.jpg]
The Philadelphia Liberty had two top 5 picks in the S29 and went for DE Lucid Dreams and TE Chevvy Bronko. Both their DE are season 25 players and whilst Tex Wrecks is a high earner with 918 TPE Same Roes has only got to 390. Liberty might be looking to replace Roes with this high draft pick as Dreams already has 269 TPE. They also found a replacement for Avon Blocksdale in Chevvy Bronko. Bronko will come straight up from the DSFL and help Philadelphia immediately. They have grabbed two players who should make an impact and be starters for the foreseeable future. Their next pick was in the 3rd round where they drafted In Active the linebacker. They have a solid LB corps with 2 900+ TPE players but maybe they are looking to replace Thomas Rose as they only have 533 TPE despite being an S24 player. In Active has a respectable 124 TPE, so whilst they are not one of the highest earners in this draft class, they have shown they are a dedicated member of the community. Liberty did not manage to find a replacement for Flash Panda who will regress 25% this year, though Bronko will be able to catch passes too. This could hurt them as they have no WR waiting in the DSFL and when Panda goes, they will be down to only 2 receivers. The other two are up and coming stars Chambers and Asui so they will be able to take a WR next draft and still have a solid group of receivers for QB Ryan Negs. Philadelphia has no real problems with players regressing as they have quite a young team. The most important thing now will be for their players to keep earning so the team can reach its full potential.

Sarasota Sailfish
[Image: nes4gYc.jpg]
The Sailfish only had two draft picks this year, both in the second round. They took RB John Huntsman and OL Keane Lover. Huntsman will add some competition to the RB room. Chizuru Ichinose will regress 25% this season, they have a lot of TPE to go around so they will probably last another season or two after this one. They can’t last forever though and picking up Huntsman gives them some options going forward. Keane Lover was the other pick who will be added to a solid O-line already. I think this was just a BPA pick rather than filling any great need as they already have 4 o-line players with the oldest being S23. None of them are super high earners though so maybe Sarasota is looking for a top tier o-line to hold down the line for them for years to come. This leaves a few upcoming holes left on the Sailfish roster, but all the regressing players are Season 22 and are only losing 20% this season. Next year they will start to feel the pinch at DT, Safety and Kicker. I think they will be fine though; they only really need one safety next year and a DT. Their kicker has enough TPE to last a few more seasons especially as kickers can be serviceable with lower TPE than other positions. I would not expect Sarasota to slow down anytime soon as they look well prepared for the future.

San Jose Sabercats
[Image: aAckusN.jpg]
In the first round of the S29 draft, the Sabercats took QB Panda McKyle. I am not going to lie this one is a bit of a headscratcher as they already have Red Arrow Jr on their roster who I assumed would be the heir to Monty Jack. Maybe the San Jose management team want a QB competition to motivate their young stars or maybe they want to use one of them as a trade piece, who knows? Time will tell if this were the right decision as there is still plenty of holes on their roster that could have been dealt with at 1.09. In the second round, they picked up TE Buffalo Hunter. Once again, they have Bobby Tarantino already waiting in the DSFL, but their progress has halted as they are pretty much the same TPE as Hunter despite having an extra two seasons to earn. San Jose obviously felt it was time to move on from Hunter or that they were not going to be able to step up and replace Lewandowski as he faces 25% regression this year. In the third round, they grabbed Guy Gibson a CB coming out of Bondi Beach. They have 3 on the roster and another player already in the DSFL. That is 5 CB with the oldest being from S24. Once again, I’m not sure why they didn’t grab a position where they had a greater need like at linebacker or DT. Maybe they liked the user and just wanted to grab the player they thought would end up being the best. They can always swap positions if the player is willing and I feel like San Jose might have to, being stacked in some areas whilst having glaring holes in others. Star running back Lackson starts their regression this season and DT Otis Allen is regressing 25%. Maybe they have a plan in place but from the outside looking in San Jose have possibly made some mistakes here. Maybe the players they drafted as a replacement for the ageing vets have not worked out and so they have to draft that position again, but it seems like there is a lot of wasted capital over the past few drafts and the team will maybe struggle in the upcoming seasons.

Yellowknife Wraiths
[Image: YDZ0BEf.jpg]
Defending champs Yellowknife Wraiths drafted Jay Cue Jr. at 1.11 in this year’s draft. Cue Jr. is one of the top earners of this class with 330 TPE and Yellowknife will be delighted to grab them. They only have Acura Skyline as an RB on their roster so they will no doubt pair Cue with Gaare when Skyline regresses too much to carry on. Skyline is just entering regression this year so probably has two seasons left until it becomes the Gaare and Cue show. In the second round, the Wraiths managed to grab DT Amadeus Redding. Their DT Patrik Money starts regression this year so picking up Redding makes sense. He should be able to step in once Money has to hang up his boots. With their last pick, Yellowknife took CB Charity Beaver. There was no immediate need for a CB, but they must have liked the value of getting a 116 TPE player in the late third round. They have a few holes coming up with their season 22 players regressing at TE, OL, DE, QB and Safety without replacements lined up. The big one will be finding Colby Jack’s long-term replacement as ideally; they would be in the DSFL earning already. There are a few teams with multiple DSFL QB’s so Yellowknife may have to make some moves and negotiate something with those teams if they want a smooth transition from Jack. They have replacements lined up for most other positions though and look set to stay competitive after this team at the peak of their powers starts the inevitable decline.

Really enjoying these deep dives into regression. I hope this is something that you keep up in future seasons. I think reading something like this could really help new or casual users that maybe aren’t as in tune as to what the state of the league is.

This is a great article! I like seeing it all laid out like this.
