Which DT Archetype should I pick? - Swanty - 06-01-2021

So you’ve decided to create a Defensive Tackle! But which archetype to choose?

You have three options: Nose Tackle, Interior Rusher, All-Purpose DT. Let’s take a look at those in more detail.

Height and Weight

Nose Tackles are the heaviest and tallest of the three, clocking in at 6’5 and 345 lbs. These big units enjoy a strong, in-built advantage in their attempt to break through the offensive line and, in general, start off and max out with slightly lower attributes than the other two archetypes.

Interior Rushers are the lightest and shortest of the three, at 6’3 and 315 lbs. While their size alone won’t break through the line quite as readily as a Nose Tackle, they enjoy slightly elevated attributes elsewhere to make them competitive. We’ll come onto individual attributes a bit later, but Interior Rushers speed will make them more dangerous if and when they do break through.

All-Purpose DTs offer the best of both worlds. They have decent size at 6’4 and 330 lbs and strong attributes, both at low and high TPE.

For a Defensive Tackle, Strength is important for breaking through blocks and making tackles. It is also useful in forcing fumbles.

In terms of how they start out, All-Purpose DTs start out as the strongest of the archetypes at 60, but they cap out the same as a Nose Tackle at 95. Those opting for the heavier Nose Tackle will need to apply more TPE to get there though, as they start out at 55.

Interior Rushers also start out at 55 Strength, but they max out at just 90. So as well as being the smallest and lightest, Interior Rushers are the weakest of the three.

It might be obvious that the Tackling attribute is super important for bringing down the ball-carrier, but it also helps with forcing fumbles and significantly contributes to breaking through blocks.

All three archetypes max out at 95 Tackling, though Nose Tackles have to work a little harder to get there, starting out at 55, while All-Purpose DTs and Interior Rushers start out at 60.

Up until now, it might have sounded like Interior Rushers were at quite a disadvantage in terms of size and strength. Where they excel most of all is in how quickly they can get around.

They’re not exactly Usain Bolt, topping out at just 75 Speed, but that’s ahead of All-Purpose DT who maxes at 70, and Nose Tackle who can only manage 65 Speed.

Brand new Interior Rushers also start out ahead of the other two, with 50 Speed versus 45 for All-Purpose DTs and an extremely slow 35 Speed for Nose Tackles.

So whether your DT has just broken through the line and is looking for the sack, or is chasing down the ball-carrier, Interior Rushers will have the best chance of getting there.

Agility is important for breaking through blocks and is also useful for tackling.

As well as advantages in Speed, Interior Rushers have a huge advantage in Agility. They start out with a very strong 60 and max out at 90. So while they lag behind in the Strength and Tackling needed to shed blocks, their advantage in Agility does a good job of making up for it.

Nose Tackles meanwhile will need to make the most of their physical attributes, because their Agility starts at just 40, topping out at 70.

All-Purpose DTs are again a nice mix of both, starting at 50 and maxing at 80.

Higher Endurance helps with tackling.

All three archetypes here max out at 80 Endurance, though if you pick Nose Tackle, you’ll have to work a little harder to get there, starting at 45 Endurance versus 55 for both All-Purpose DTs and Interior Rushers.
