The Yellowknife Wraiths don't have a ton of things they can do in Yellowknife, but what they have found this season isn't what one would expect them to be doing with their evenings. Jogn Floggity was the first to meet Agnus Hinkleton when he was at the town's fresh market one night. Agnus told him how big a fan she was of the team and that she had a group of ladies that would love to meet him. Jogn agreed to join Agnus later that week and when he showed up he didn't know what to expect. He walked through the doors and found a group of 11 old ladies and their book club. Unexpectedly, Jogn fell in love with it and soon after he had convinced more and more of his teammates to join him. First it was Mat Akselsen who joined him and soon after the book club started to include Chris Orosz, Bubba Nuck, Dermot Lavelle, Brice Boggs, Luke Chunk, Josh Garden, and Darren Smallwood. Even menacing defensive end, Jason Spearhead has shown interest in coming but the problem is he doesn't know how to read. The team has been trying to take their time and teach him so he can join them and he has even began listening to audio books so he can be part of the group. Agnus and the girls have loved the experience and the team has become closer than they ever were before by joining this old ladies reading group.

The Hawks locker room is a special place. It's happy place with lots of friendly joking and shenanigans. It could be because the Hawks are tied for the most wins in the NSFL, and have already won two more games than last year. But, no, it's something else. There's always something going on, but chances are, you'll be hearing the most noise coming from the corner of the room near Jorge Masdival's locker. You see, Masdival is the undisputed locker room champion. Not in poker, not in Madden, not in competitive shoe tying. No, Masdival is Baltimore Hawks' pog champion.
That's right, pogs. Those ridiculous little cardboard discs that were so big with kids in the 90's. For those of you not cool enough to be in elementary school in the 90's let me explain. Each player contributes and equal number of pogs and they're put in a stack. Each player the takes a slammer (usually a heavier disc made of plastic) and throws it on the top of the sack, sending pogs flying. Each pog that lands face down is kept by the player, pogs that land face up are placed back into the stack. Players take turns throwing their slammer at the stack until there are no pogs left. The player with the most pogs when the stack is gone is the winner. Depending on the house rules, the winner may or may not keep the loser's slammer. In Baltimore, they play for keeps.
Pogs are back in Baltimore, and they're back in a big way. Masdival's secret weapon? A solid metal Apollo 13 slammer he got in a kid's meal back in the day. It is the envy of the locker room. Many have attempted to win that magnificent little disc from Masdival, all have failed. If you ask him nicely, I'm sure he'll be happy to show you his ever growing collection of slammers.

The San Jose SabreCats are a team that while fairly young, is very close. To help keep a healthy team relationship a number of players have brought in a couple of game consoles and gaming computers, as a small distraction and escape from the grind of the NSFL. Whether it be Halo, Counter-Strike, Mortal Kombat, or even obsure anime games brought in by Denzel Diaz, the team is always competing to be the champion of video game time. Dan Miller really enjoys a good role playing game so he seldom participates in the team games, but he he gets a pass because of his veteran status. The QBs of the locker room always choose different teams and always end up screaming obscenities to the opposing team, especially in Halo, but it's all in good fun. Being a roojie, Denzel Diaz isn't able to choose a game while his team is around, and is instead forced to play whatever the team is playing that day, but when everyone is gone, Denzel can reportedly be seen indulging in some foreign games from Japan, usually involving small anime schoolgirls in lewd positions. Denzel strongly denies any allegations that he plays anime porn games, but his teammates have their reasons to believe he does, as Dan Miller has supposedly sneaked up on Denzel a few times when he's alone in the locker room, only to find Denzel playing some racy stuff.

The Baltimore Hawks linebackers are a very tight knit bunch. Broadway, Harrison, and Wright get together weekly for dinner and drinks followed by hours of Madden. Typically they meet up mid-week to break up the monotony of of their schedules. It has improved performance of the unit as a whole since they've really been able to bond.

They each take turns picking restaurants and have hit most of the top places Baltimore has to offer like The Rusty Scupper or The Capital Grille.

When it comes Madden, though, one of these guys stands out above the rest.

"Harrison is hands down the best Madden player on the team. I've played a lot of Madden in my day and I can't even compete." Broadway said, "No matter how much you try to handicap him, he'll beat you with the Browns when you're the Patriots. It doesn't matter. Even if you know what play he's calling, you just can't stop it. It's remarkable, really. If he wasn't playing pro ball, he could probably play Madden professionally. We're all excited for the new game to come out. We might have to make a midnight run to get it on release day. Practice will be tough after staying up all night but totally worth it."

This is some of the Hawk's players playing the new Madden NSFL edition, slated to release later this month. Yes it's a Playstation 1 controller, it's uh... Madden Retro Edition.

Lots of things can bring people together, for the Otters locker room it’s going out after a long practice and shooting some guns. They feel the best thing to do is get a whole bunch of discs with the current opposing team’s faces on it and take a few shots to blow off some steam. Some like to to do a little bit more than just shoot though. Mike Boss is a gunslinger on the field and a gunslinger afterwards as well. He comes out in a complete sheriff's outfit, a star pin, and two six shooters fully loaded. He comes out guns blazing fire off 12 rounds of fury (missing every shot.) Then there’s also Angus Winchester. He doesn’t use a Winchester rifle but he does use an elephant gun. He basically never misses and the only thing left after he shoots is dust. Last but least we have Marc Spector. This guy is the craziest of all. He has no regard for safety and does whatever he wants, all other teammates wait until he is done before going outside. He brings his own custom painted .50 caliber machine gun and fires of over 2000 rounds. Once he’s done though everyone is allowed outside to play again. Everyone else is pretty normal though, thank God haha.

Way up here in the great frozen tundra of Yellowknife you might not think there is too much to do but if you're adventurous and tough enough to brave the cold you would be amazed at how much you can get done. There is one thing that we all do that is great for seeing all that the North has to offer. Dog sledding. You wouldn't think a bunch of dudes who are used to growing up with 100 summers would be into something like that but it's honestly a lot of fun. A couple of us went on a dog sled tour when we first got here and we were hooked so we bought our own sleds and our own dogs and hired a local family to look after them when we are on the road. Getting out in the fresh air is great and you get to see cool ass shit like the Northern Lights or the Aurora Village. Seeing those two things at night should definitely be on your bucket list. Getting a dog sled means you get to name each dog and you best make sure that you remember each dog as it may save your life one day.

With the team being in Philadelphia, it's no surprise that after every home game the team gets together to go out for cheesesteaks. Fox is usually the one to get the group together to go out and he picks a new place to try every week. Most of the guys have their family come along as well so it's always a good time. It's also a good chance for us to get to meet fans and be part of the community which is a great experience. Fox always has to call ahead because they definitely have to be ready for how much food we are going to order. I personally can eat like three cheesesteaks after a big game. Of course since they know we're coming it usually gets leaked where we will be so the fans come out in droves. It's always a party and something to look forward to whether we win or lose.

My wife and I really wanted to get involved in the community too, so we started volunteering at a soup kitchen every week. Other players have joined us, especially Adam Bennett, who has come with me every week. It's great to give back to people who need it the most and get to work outside of practice with my teammates for a good cause. Plus we've been able to work with team management to get tickets for some of these fans, who wouldn't be able to see the games otherwise, for every home game.

Wraiths bonding

The Yellowknife Wraiths bond in various ways. One of them being what Ballerstorm listed earlier. Another large bonding activity the Wraiths sometimes do is skiing. Some of the Wraiths want to take advantage of all the snow in cold Yellowknife and have fun going skiing. Often times, they take the flight down to Calgary, and from there, drive up to Marmot Basin ski resort. Many Wraiths have different perspectives when it comes to level of difficulty in skiing. Boggs is a beginner at skiing as he rarely went skiing in Kentucky and Florida, but he's caught on quickly. He said he wants to try his first black diamond as soon as the Wraiths get more time off. Tight end Ricky Maddox goes all out, looking for the hardest possible runs to do, often with fellow teammate, Josh Garden. Mat Akelsen, Jogn Floggity, Matt James, Tyron Smith, an Bork Bjornsson (the big boys on the line) often stick together, doing runs of medium to hard difficulty. Meanwhile, Bigboy17 watches in a big log cabin, sipping a hot drink of coffee next to a heater. He's also watching a TV. Whenever the Wraiths pass by Bigboy17, they yell "F*ck you!" and Bigboy17 will yell "F*ck you too!" right back.
