Week 6 Game Review

Versus: Dallas Birddogs

Overview:

After a strong win against the Seawolves in week 5, the Python’s were keen to maintain their winning momentum and really put pressure on Minnesota Grey Ducks, who are currently leading the devision & DSFL with a 5 – 0 record. In contrast the Birddogs are trying to recover their early season form, having lost there last three games on the bounce.

The Pythons lost the toss and forced to revive the ball, a strong kick off return 28 yards by ‘The Laz’ saw the Pythons take their first snap on the 30-yard line. The Pythons were unable to make any meaningful progress in their first drive, and punted. Roberts once again pulled off a remarkable 52-yard punt pinning the Birddogs on the 8-yard line. Dallas was able to capitalise on a couple of sloppy penalties by the Pythons defence and score the 1 TD of the match. The next drive was looking really promising until a spirited defence by the Birddogs on the 18-yard line, all the Pythons cold manage was a 32-yard FG, bringing the score to 7 – 3. A fantastic first snap on the return drive for the Pythons, saw Elliot Hord produce a wonderful 7-yard sack straight threw the center of the Dallas O-Line, ultimately ending with a 4 and out for Dallas.  With good field position, the Pythons were hoping to go one better than their previous drive and score a TD to take the lead. However, disaster struck on the 2nd snap, when Panda was picked off, throwing his 1st pick of the year. Unfortunately, this pick was extremely costly, and the Birddogs score within 20s, taking a commanding lead of 14 – 3. A four and out at the start of the 2nd quarter, wasn’t the ideal start. Again, the Birddogs were more than a match for the Pythons defence and easily scored a 3rd touchdown in 4 drives, taking an almost unassignable lead of 21 – 3 midways through the 2nd quarter. The Pythons really need a TD to stay in touch.  Another fantastic 30-yard return by “The Laz” saw the Pythons start with a solid field position, with 9 min left before the end of the 1st half. The drive was helped a long by 2 untimely penalties bring Portland within 14-yards of a first TD, Noah Johns was able to muscle his was through center producing a fantastic sidestep to reach in for a score. The Pythons were back in the game, though still trailing by 11 points. Neither team were able to create a scoring chance for the remainder of the second half, and so the Birddogs went into half time with an 11-point lead.

Half Time Score:  21 - 10

The Birddogs were not able to start the half as they desired being forced to a 4 and out by a solid Python defence. A poor punt by the Birddog punt, of 34-yard with a 15-yard return, meant the Pythons started their first drive of the half on Dallas’ 38. It didn’t take long for the Pythons to score another TD, with the 2nd snap, Panda was able to find Calvin Hobbs on a slant right in the center totally unmarked for an easy TD. A bold call by Zeagle, saw the Pythons score a 2pt conversion bring the score to 21 – 18, a one score game now. A strong drive saw the Birddogs reach the 7-yard line but were stop by a Go Bama, somehow the 24-yard FG was sliced right, meaning the score remained at 21 – 18.  A poor drive saw the Pythons conceded 2 unwanted penalties and a sack, saw any momentum they had, disappear into nothing. Though a 4 and out again and the offense were back on the field within no time at all, could they finally take the lead for the first time this game? A lovely pass by the rookie QB Wendell Sailor to the TE Mark Goodhead for 45-yard were able to flip the field position within a single play, though Mark should have found the end zone on this occasion. Panda was able to capitalise and find Tay Swizzle for another TD. Finally brining the Pythons into the lead, with the score now 25 – 18. Another 3 and out saw the Birddogs punting from their own 15-yard line, however a superb play by Teddy Murphy, who was able to block the punt, meant the Pythons picked the ball up in excellent field position. Another strong rush by Baxter up the middle resulted in his 1st TD of the game on the first snap of the 4th quarter, meant that the Pythons a commanding lead of 32 – 21. At this point the Pythons had scored 29 unanswered points.  Several uninspiring drive by both teams saw the clock tick down very quickly in the 4th quarter, the game was heading toward another win for the Pythons. After a turnover on down on Dallas’s own 25-yard line, the Pythons were looking to put the game to bed with another score, and that was Jax was able to do, rushing 2-yards for his 2nd TD of the day the score was now 39 - 21. With little time left on the clock Dallas were unable to get anything else from the game.

The Pythons now move to 4 – 1 – 1, with a tough fixture vs Tijuana in week 7, they will be hoping to increase their 4-win streak to 5.
