*Ranking Every Team Ever (Part 1) - Modern_Duke - 08-21-2021
30 seasons of ISFL football. 298 teams. I decided to rank them all. Why? I would ask you, why not?
My initial idea was to just go full madman and rank all teams together like I did with my QB ranking, but I couldn't tackle the issue of weighting playoff success vs. regular season success. Is a 9-5 team that missed the playoffs better than a 7-7 team that made the playoffs? Is the 9-7 team that won the Ultimus better than the 12-4 team that lost in the wild card round? Like I said I wrestled with these questions for a while before deciding to simplify things by grouping teams into four tiers:
Tier IV: Missed the Playoffs
Tier III: Playoff Losers
Tier II: Conference Champions
Tier I: Ultimus Champions
In terms of the actual rankings, I mostly looked at win-loss record (fancy, I know), but also looked at points scored and allowed, and ran the Pythagorean win % for each team.
For the points, since the number of games per season has fluctuated over the course of the league, it's obviously easier to look at points per game rather than total points. I then calculated the difference in points compared to the league average. This helps to normalize performance for different eras in the league. A team that scored 24 points per game in Season 13 (when the average points per game was 26.4) is different than a team that scored 24 points per game in Season 22 (average 20.4). So keeping that same example, I will show the points per game and then the % difference from league average (-9.1% for the S13 team / +17.6% for the S22 team). I also showed the point differential (points scored - points allowed) for each team, but there's no comparison to league average there, as that is naturally 0.
The other thing I looked at is Pythagorean win percentage (even though its also directly based on points). This was popularized in baseball to get a better idea of a team's expected wins and losses based on runs scored and runs allowed rather than actual game results. The basic formula for baseball is (runs scored ^2) / [(runs scored + runs allowed) ^2]. The idea can work the same for football, but since the scoring environment is much higher than baseball the exponent changes slightly from 2 to 2.37.

The worst team in league history is the infamous Yeti team fully in the throws of the impressive streak of 32 loses. This team can lay claim to the worst point differential ever, the lowest Pythagorean record ever, a claim on the worst offense ever (they scored 61.71% less points than league average which is the worst ever, but another team scored fewer points), plus the obvious winless record.
147. S27 Baltimore Hawks 0-16-0 (0.000)
Points For: 13.6 (-43.78%)
Points Against: 38.6 (+59.37%)
Point Differential: -25.0
Pythagorean Win %: 0.078
The team with the unfortunate distinction of being the only 0-16 team in league history, they challenged the S7 Yeti for worst point differential ever, but the offense was just too, uh, good to take the title. Similar to Yeti, this team has a claim for the worst defense ever (allowed 59.37% more points than league average), but another team allowed more points overall.
146. S6 Colorado Yeti 0-14-0 (0.000)

The earlier version of the Yeti anti-dynasty, this team actually had a worse defense, but scored quite a bit more than the S7 team.

By the numbers, this team is worse than S16 Austin and maybe some of the other winless teams. This was the team with the lowest scoring offense ever (lead partially by the infamous Franky LaFleur), and their Pythagorean record tops only the S7 Yeti. They only scored more than 10 points four times on the season. Even in their sole victory they only scored 9 points.

Talk about a heart breaker. Wraiths and Yeti were both 10-5 going into Week 16. Yeti tied with Honolulu, so Yellowknife just had to beat or tie 5-10 Philadelphia to make it in, but they went and got blown out 31-10. Also shout out to Yellowknife for showing off their special brand of bad luck, as they have the only two 10 win teams to miss the playoffs, and they occurred in a 3 season span.
2. S22 San Jose SaberCats 8-5-0 (0.615)
Points For: 22.2 (+8.54%)
Points Against: 19.3 (-5.40%)
Point Differential: +2.8
Pythagorean Win %: 0.581
8-4 San Jose entered Week 14 controlling their own fate, facing off against 7-4-1 Austin. Naturally as they are on this list, you can guess how that one turned out.

For what its worth, the injustice here is limited as the Arizona and Orange County teams that made it in ahead of them in the ASFC were certainly superior teams. The real issue is that San Jose was the third best team in the league, better than any team in the NSFC.
