*A look at Team Canada - World Football Championship - Raven - 09-02-2021

[3019 words + the images. Also 1.5x media bonus lets gooo]

Damn has it really been a month since I did those first few articles? Time really flies when you are doing absolutely nothing. Anyways originally when I had posted the articles looking at Team Europe and Team Asian Pacific. I intended to post one for all the remaining teams I had not done until that point. However with it being the first WFC I low key figured there might be a WFC and Draft specific 1.5x or 2x media bonus going on in the offseason. Well the media bonus has been announced and it is for every kind of article which works in my case, so let's continue this look into the teams and how their lineup is looking like. Also I had kinda hoped the media bonus had dropped earlier or the WFC had started later. As I know the WFC has already started and is in the full swing of things. Season is nearly over already, but I will ignore all current results and preformances and just still to hey person x did this in the regular season so they the best ever.

One thing that has been added since my original articles is loans. Loans are essentially a one year contract to a player to represent a team that is not their original team. So a player who might not get a call up for team Southernwest United States due to roster depth is allowed to be loaned out to a team who needs a player at that position. Seeing as these loans are a one season kind of deal I will not be taking them into account when looking at the roster depths. These charts area only to meassure the strength and depth of teams before any loan schenanigans.

Moving on to the depth chart I will follow the order as in the previous articles. Starting off with:

Quarterbacks

The quarterback situation in Team Canada is pretty cut and dry. Their main guy is Ontario native Dexter Zaylren. Zaylren is a young player who had a great season down in the DSFL. 33 touchdowns on the year was the 2nd highest and 13 interceptions is two less than the two QBs who had more or equal touchdowns. He was third in yards with 4330 yards a 61.6 completion percentage on 544 throwing attempts and an overall QB rating of 96. He will be the number one man for Team Canada for years to come. Toucan Sam is a new face on the block. He recently announced his intentions to join the upcoming DSFL draft and will be the future number 2 to Zaylren and if he keeps on training will eventually take over the reign from Zaylren. We're talking many seasons in the future, but there will be a smooth transition from Zaylren to Sam if he continues to develop.

Running Backs

Team Canada has a great mix of young and older players in their ranks. While this year Lackson looks to be the number 1 guy, he is old and will be feeling the regression stack after this season. Meanwhile Goose is still working his way to his prime, albeit he is looking to be very close to it. There will likely be a change of watch between these two players very soon. Then there is Rejoignez LOrdreSombre, who is a year younger than Goose and will likely play the number two to his number one in the future. Yaji Robe is another youngster who is a year behind LOrdreSombre.

When it came to the regular season Lackson was the third best running back in yards. He ran for 1189 yards with an average of 5.3 yards per carry overe 224 carries. He also recorded 9 touchdowns. He received some love in the receiving department with 62 receptions for 624 yards, 10.1 yard average and he recorded 5 touchdowns. Goose  went for 767 yards, 3.8 average with 5 touchdowns. Through the air he had 47 catches for 470 yards, a 10 yard averae per catch and recorded 1 touchdown. Rookie LOrdreSombre recorded 497 running yards over 125 attempts for a 4 yard average with 3 touchdowns. He received 38 passes for 307 yards, a 8.1 yard average and 2 touchdowns.

Meanwhile down in the minors Robe had 993 rushing yards, an average of 4.1 yards on 241 attempts and he scored 10 touchdowns. 14 receptions were met with 73 yards for a 5.2 yard average. DeAndre Henry had 29 attemtps for 84 yards, a 2.9 yard average and in the air had 8 attempts for 73 yards for a 9.1 yard average.

The running back situation in Team Canada is looking pretty good. They have replacement for Lackson in Goose and LOrdreSombre, with Robe in the back as he grows. Henry has a slow gain, but is gaining tpe. Meanwhile the team has no obvious fullback options as all their players play a non fullback role on their teams.

Wide Receivers

In the ranks at wide receivers Team Canada currently houses three wide receivers. They are all young and upcoming players, Saleem Spence is the oldest of the group coming from the S28 draft class and will most likely be the #1 target for team Canada. During the regular season he recorded 70 catches for 887 yards, a 12.7 yard average and getting 2 touchdowns. Quinton Crash being a season younger did outpreform Spence getting 1062 yards on 66 catches for an average of 16.1 yards and 7 touchdowns. Fantuz playing down in the DSFL recorded 88 catches for 1175 yards for an average of 13.4 yards per catch and recorded 6 touch downs.

Team Canada might lack one of the star wide receivers in the league, but they posses 3 young players who if they keep growing will be those star receivers. Spence and Crash both play third string for their current teams and as they grow and move up the ranks will be getting those stats. Meanwhile in Team Canada they can prove their worth.

Tight End

Adam C. Spencer has to the number 1 pick for Team Canada. He is the oldest player on the team and his ability is a head and schoulder above the rest of the depth chart. Nick L. Back is a great young player who as he continues to develop will take over from Spencer in the future, as Spencer is looking to start regressing after the next season. Back already has gained experience in the ISFL being called up instantly to his team, the Chicago Butchers. Warren Buffet is a youngster, but development has been slow and he will likely have a hard time adapting to the play in the WFC. If he has to be called up once Spencer is gone. For the Second Line Spencer has recorded 87 catches for 606 yards, an average of 7 with 2 touchdowns. He also baked 45 pancakes during the season with 1 sack allowed. Nick L. Back got the instant call up and was heavily relied upon by the Butchers. He recorded 687 yards on 71 catches for an average of 9.7 yards per carry. He also scored 4 touch downs. In the blocking game he recorded 30 pancakes and allowed 2 sacks.

Down in the DSFL Buffet saw himself catch 36 passes for 233 yards an 6.5 yard per carry average and he scored 1 touchdown. Meanwhile he provided 11 pancakes and allowed 1 sack. He started in 8 games and played in all 14.

Tight end might be a bit of a worry in the future. Nick L. Back will be a great tight end for the team for years to come. Spencer will be there as well, but with regression around the corner you will have to look at replacements. Buffet is earning, but his ceiling might be questionable. Tight Ends looking to make a difference could turn to Team Canada in the future.

Offensive Line

First thing that stands out to me is that this is a pretty old offensive line. With two of the 6 players retiring after this season. Now Hamel and Maximus are not 'that' old. They are not in regression yet, but Hamel has 1 more year and then Maximus has 2 more after that. Running Back is an IA option and Howard Walters who has recently opted to be drafted into the DSFL is still young and a question mark. Looking at this offensive line I feel a bit worried for the future. As after this season the line is Hamel, Maximus, Back and Walters + an extra option. It is not optimal and Canada will have to do some recruitment in the Offensive Line department.

Stats wise Mo Magic was a stud leading the league in non bot pancakes with 132 pancakes, but he did allow 4 sacks. Hamel was close behind him with 130 pancakes and 2 sacks allowed. Maximus had 91 panckaes and he allowed 1 sack. Finally Tremblay had 76 panckaes and allowed 4 sacks. Back being an FA had no stats recorded and Walters only came into the league during the playoffs.

Defensive End

With three Defensive End slots open to Team Canada the line up of Beanman, Jeffrey and Hellraiser seems to be the most likely one. Noble Jr. will turn to dust if someone even attempts to touch him and that leaves the previously 3 named players left. Beanman had 53 tackles this season, 1 for a loss and recorded 10 sacks. He also forced 3 fumbles and recovered 3 fumbles. Down in the DSFL Hellraiser recored 22 tackles, 2 for a loss and 5 sacks. Both Jeffrey and Noble Jr were free agents this season and did not record any stats.

Defensive End is an interesting position for Team Canada. Beanman is a great #1 and Hellraiser is young and improving and will slot in very nicely. The third slot on the team is open for grabs. With Jeffrey and Noble regressing and retiring in the near future.

Defensive Tackle

Now this is a troubling position for Team Canada. Fitinyomouf is their only real active viable option to provide tackling duties on the defensive line. This season he recorded 35 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and 6 sacks. Paired up with 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Miller II had 18 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss and 1 sack for the Fire Salamanders this season. Zephyr Greywolf was a trade deadline day waiver pick up for the Norfolk SeaWolves who played him in 4 games in which he got 8 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 sack. Cera was a free agent this season and Turtle joined during the playoffs.

With both Miller II being in regression and IA and Cera being 50 TPE and IA and in regression. Defensive Tackle is a rough spot as I mentioned. Fitinyomouf is still young and improving and with Franklin Turtle and Zephy GreyWolf the team has future options if they pan out. So that is the one hope for the future, there are players coming to save the spot, when will they be ready, that is the question for Team Canada.

Linebacker

For the linebacker position 5 slots on the team are made open. Team Canada can field 3 with their current depth charts. Of which 1 is inactive. Rusty Rucker will lead the line for the Canadians as he is a class above the rest. He lead the ISFL in tackles this season with 126 tackles, 6 tackles for a loss, 6 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery 10 sacks and 16 pass deflections. Rucker was an overall menace. He will line up with Sam Squanch who in the DSFL was the 6th leading tackler. He recorded 95 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss. 2 Fumble recoveries and had 3 passes defended. The last linebacker on the depth charts is Logan Sarrasin who while signed to the Arizona Outlaws did not start a single game this season. Having only 1 apperance subbing into a game.

On one hand you have one of the best linebackers currently in the league and a solid young option in Squanch and on the other had you have 3 slots which you have to fill somehow. I have not mentioned them yet, but loans are team Canada's friend. This should be a call to all young Canadians who have ambition to play for their international team. Train hard, work your way into the league and rep your country. They really need it. Rucker is great, but not the youngest anymore. He can still go for several season, but regression is right around the corner for him.

Cornerback

Picksix II and Bruckner are Team Canada's two cornerbacks. Both young PickSix II had 100 tackles on the year with 1 tackle for a loss. He also intercepted 3 passes and deflected 35. Which put him 3rd overall behind a two way tie for 39. Bruckner played lower string duties for the Otters starting in 6 games, but playing in all 16. He recorded 30 tackles, a sack and 5 deflected passes. Ray-Ray Jackson is the last player on the chart, but is inactive. In 16 games with the Yellowknife Wraiths he recorded 54 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 6 sacks, 1 interception and 13 deflected passes. He also scored a safety.

The secondary continues to show weakness for Team Canada. Cornerback is probably the best position out of the three, as PickSix II and Brucker are both in the mids of their careers. S27 and S28 gives them a good few more season to improve as they are already entering the top ranks of the position. However with 4 slots open, the depth is lacking. With only 1 IA player they couldnt fill out all the slots.

Safety

2 actives, 1 inactive and 1 player who has retired. This is a weird set up. Smoothie is a great safety who is heading deeper into regression, but this season still provides top quality. Right now Eugene Smoothie is still among the best safeties in the game and on the field this season recored 72 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 2 sacks, 4 interceptions, 1 defensive touch down and 8 pass deflections. Provide to be an all around threat in the defense for the otters.  Miller is still among the young crowd and growing. Miller had 72 tackles, 2 sacks and 13 deflected passes. The inactive McRae had 39 tackles, 1 sack and 8 deflected passes. The now retired s30 youngster Richard Mansher recored 51 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 1 defensive touchdown and 7 deflected passes for the Birddogs. Having himself a good season, before hanging up the cleats.

I look at this list and see future worries for Team Canada. Smoothie is not getting any younger and in the near future will be out. Miller II can still go for a while, but besides him there are no future options for Team Canada. Get this team some future secondaries stat.

Kicker

Kicker is a beautiful position, because it is just kinda there. Jean-Jacques Leroy will be the kicker in Canada for many tournaments to come. Being a S29 and earning steadily and you know, being a kicker Leroy will not need a replacement until like the S40's. As a rookie kicker Leroy had a perfect extra point season going 47 out of 47. They kicked in 26 out of 36 field goals, but they are young and will get better at this for season to come. Leroy also had a long of 54. Punting wise they had 2760 yards on 63 punts for an average of 43.8 yards. 22 inside the 20's and a long of 64.

Like I said kicker is one of those position that once you have 1 good player in that spot you are basically set forever. So Team Canada should be happy here.

Transfers

In:

Saleem Spence (Team World)
Gluteus Maximus (Team Western United States)
Dexter Zaylren (Team Atlantic-Midwest United States)
Busch Goose (Team Atlantic-Midwest United States)
Anton Bruckner (Team Western United States)
Adam C. Spencer (Team Atlantic-Midwest United States)

Out:

N/A

Great bit of transfering here for team Canada. They get their starting quarterback from transfers and he can go for a while with them. They bring in Busch Goose the young receiving runningback option for this team. Saleem Spence is there best wide receiver and #1 option. Adam C. Spencer their best option at tight end. Bruckner to build upon their cornerback game and finally Gluteus Maximus for the offensive line. Team Canada has absolutely profited from transfers and have not lost a single player to it either.

Provinces and territories break down

Ontario: 10
Alberta: 9
Quebec: 5
Manitoba: 3
British Columbia: 3
Nova Scotia: 2
Not specified: 2
Nunavut: 1
Saskatchewan: 1
Yukon: 1

Overall thoughts

As we have seen with the roster that is currently being used by team Canada in the World Football Championship they have had to use the loan option a good bit. The team has solid options in most positions, but is also missing a ton of depth. The positions that currently have the best coverage in the depth charts are Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Reicever Tight End and Kicker. So the offense minus the offensive line is basically set for the team. Defense is where the issues really lay. A combination between a lack of depth and young players hurts the team in the future. This is mostly for the secondary. The defensive line does not feel as bad, but will struggle from underdevelopment of the players. Team Canada will have to continue with loans for a while to fill in the gaps.
