Which TE Archetype should I pick? - Swanty - 09-29-2021

So you’ve decided to create a Tight End! But which archetype to choose?

You have three options: Vertical Threat, Possession TE, Blocking TE. Let’s take a look at those in more detail.

Height and Weight

Height and weight are important for Tight Ends. Those who are tall, and especially those who can reach higher than the covering defender, will be more likely to come down with the ball. Those that are heavier will be less likely to be tackled and more likely to make a successful block.

Blocking TEs are unsurprisingly the heaviest of the archetypes at 265 lbs and stack up at 6'4.

Vertical Threat TEs are the lightest at 250 lbs but are also 6'4.

Possession TEs are between the two in terms of weight, at 255 lbs, but are the second tallest players in the entire game at 6'6 (second only to Mauler OLs who are 6'7).

As with anyone catching the ball, Speed it the most important attribute.

Blocking TEs start out the slowest at a glacial 45 Speed, but can reach a maximum of 85. Possession TEs also cap at 85 but have a slight headstart, with a starting value of 50. The fastest of all are the Vertical Threats, who start from 55 and can make it up to 90 Speed.

Strength is important for blocking, getting pancakes and avoiding tackles.

Vertical Threats are the weakest of the TE archetypes. They start off at 40 Strength but can still reach a respectable 80.

It's a big jump to both Possession TEs and Blocking TEs who start off 10 higher at 50 Strength. Possession TEs can get up to 85, but Blocking TEs can push even further up to a max of 90 Strength.

Pass/Run Blocking

Pass Blocking helps to block on passing plays and Run Blocking helps to block when it's a running play. Both attributes help pancake defenders on any type of play.

Unsurprisingly, this is where the Blocking TE really shines. They start off at 40 and can reach a massive 85 in each attribute.

Possession TEs have a much narrower range, starting at 35 and hitting only 60.

And the Vertical Threats aren't really much of a threat at all in comparison, starting at a measly 20 and reaching just 50.

Agility

Agility is important for pass blocking, avoiding tackles and catching the ball. It's also important for returning kicks/punts if your team has picked you as a returner.

With a mix of benefits to both blocking and catching, the archetypes are all fairly similar here. Blocking TEs start at 40 and peak at 75, while the other two start out with 45. Vertical Threats can make it as high as 85 Agility, while Possession TEs max out at 80.

Hands

Higher Hands means you are less likely to fumble and more likely to be targeted with a pass by your QB. Important for catching the ball, and for pass blocking and getting pancakes.

Again, this attribute benefits all types of Tight Ends. But it's the two receiving types that shine the most with this attribute. Possession TEs are the best of the group, with a range of 55 to 90.

Vertical Threats are just 5 behind, ranging from 50 to 85.

Blocking TEs start out at just 45 though, reaching a max of only 80.

Endurance

Higher Endurance helps with avoiding tackles. For receiving, higher endurance means you’re less likely to be easier to bring down. Higher values also make it less likely your player will need to be subbed out for a rest.

All three archetypes start out at 50 here, but it's the two receiving archtypes, Vertical Threat and Possession TE, who max out the highest at 90. Blocking TEs can only reach a high of 80.

Competitiveness

If the defender has higher competitiveness than the ballcarrier, they are much more likely to force a fumble. Makes receivers slightly more likely to catch the ball.

Blocking TEs and Possession TEs are the best in this attribute, starting out at 40 and peaking at 80. Vertical Threats might be slightly more fumble-prone, with a range of 35 to 75.

Traits

As well as their different attribute distributions, each archetype has access to two out of four possible traits that some other TEs won't be able to get.

Vertical Threats and Possession TEs are able to purchase a trait called 'ReceivingTE'. This is one of the most powerful offensive traits, making the tight end much faster after catching the ball, more likely to be targeted in the passing game and less likely to drop passes. It has a steep price though, and you'll need to part with 150 TPE to buy it.

Possession TEs and Blocking TEs can purchase 'Athlete'. It'll cost them 50 TPE and will make them slightly faster after catching the ball.

Blocking TEs can buy a trait called... 'BlockingTE'! It's not quite as expensive as 'ReceivingTE', but will still set you back 100 TPE to acquire it. The trait makes your TE much better at blocking, but will also make you less likely to be targeted with a pass.

And lastly, Vertical Threats have access to a trait called 'DeepThreat'. It provides an after-the-catch speed boost and has an additional effect. If the QB has decided to throw Deep, they are more likely to throw to a player with this trait, making them a real danger down the field.
