Which OL Archetype should I pick? - Swanty - 09-29-2021

So you’ve decided to create a Offensive Lineman! But which archetype to choose?

You have three options: Athletic Lineman, Balanced Lineman, Mauler. Let’s take a look at those in more detail.

Weight

Heavier blockers have a better chance of a successful block, so weight is one of the most important factors for OL. And considering it's fixed per archetype, the heaviest OL will have a major built-in advantage for no TPE cost.

In this category, it's the Mauler who is the heaviest of the three, weighing in at a chunky 325 lbs. Only Nose Tackles weigh more!

Balanced Lineman is 10 lbs lighter at 315 lbs while Athletic Lineman is the lightest of the three at 310 lbs, but they will excel in other areas.

Strength is important for blocking and getting pancakes.

As well as having a decent built-in advantage for being the heaviest archetype, Maulers also have the highest Strength. They start out at 65 and can hit the dizzying heights of 100 (though the update scale means it will take a ton of TPE to get there!).

Balanced Lineman is just 5 TPE back, starting at 60 and peaking at 95.

Athletic Lineman is a further 5 TPE back, ranging from 55 to 90.

Pass Blocking is important for blocking on passing plays and helps pancake defenders on any type of play

Getting into the technical attributes, and this is where the Athletic Lineman starts to shine. They range from 60 all the way up to 100 and are the strongest in this category.

Once again, Balanced Lineman is in the middle of the other two, starting at 55 and maxing at 95.

Mauler has a wider range, starting at just 45 and reaching a high of 90.

Run Blocking is important for blocking on run plays, and helps pancake defenders on any type of play

While Athletic Lineman start out alongside Balanced Lineman as the highest in this attribute with 55, they can only reach a maximum of 90.

Balanced Lineman meanwhile can go a little further and hit 95.

Maulers are also able to hit 95, but they need to work a little harder to get there, starting out at a measly 45.

Speed makes you run faster, obviously. This is an interesting one for OL. It's an attribute that logically seems more beneficial to those OL starting on the edges of the line, as it'll be them that needs to move around a lot more than the guards or centers.

The clue is in the name with this one. Athletic Lineman is the fastest of the three, ranging from 55 to 75.

Balanced Lineman starts out 10 lower at 45, but reaching a maximum of 70, while the plodding Maulers start out at a glacial 35 Speed and maxing out at just 60.

Agility is important for blocking on pass plays.

The most agile archetype of all is the Athletic Lineman. They start out at 50 and can reach as high as 80.

It's quite a big drop off to the Balanced Lineman who is 10 behind in both categories, with a range of 40 to 70.

Maulers meanwhile have a very narrow upgrade range, starting at 45 and maxing at just 65.

Smart players are less likely to commit penalties. Also useful for run blocking.

Athletic Lineman continue on the trend of being top in most attributes, starting out at 50 Intelligence and peaking at 80.

Both other archetypes start out 5 lower at 45, though Mauler only tops out at 70 while the Balanced Lineman can get as high as 75.

Hands is important for pass blocking and getting pancakes.

Once again, it's the Athletic Lineman who leads the threee archetypes. They range from 40 to 70 in this attribute.

Balanced Lineman is 5 further back, ranging from 35 to 65.

Maulers are again the lowest, with a starting value of 30 and maxing out at 60.
