*S33 DSFL 2-Round Mock Draft - TubaDeus - 11-02-2021

We're just two days away from the DSFL draft for the S33 rookies. There have been a handful of mocks made (most of which should probably be weighted more heavily than mine, given that this will be my first season in the league), but as an avid fan of fantasy football I like crunching numbers and I think that should be a solid approach to analyze a league based on quantifiable stats. So, without further ado, let's dig in!

ROUND 1
1.01) Bondi Beach Buccaneers BBB - King Zeus - CB
Bondi Beach has a glaring hole at cornerback. Literally a hole as they currently only feature James Sharkey on the outside. It's a tossup between Zeus and QB-convert Dax Dangerfield, but Zeus currently holds a slight edge in TPE so we'll go with him.

1.02) London Royals LON - Kaguya Shinomiya - QB
London has a fairly well-rounded roster, but they're missing a rather critical piece. Regardless of whether it's real football or sim'd, no team is complete without a QB. Shinomiya is clearly the top QB of the S33 class. Granted, there isn't much competition for that title (unless Dangerfield redacts his position change), but that shouldn't take away from Shinomiya's prospect grade.

1.03) Portland Pythons POR - Kahn Cussion - LB
Portland's most glaring need is at WR, but this just isn't the strongest WR class. Knowing that they can probably grab one of the top receivers of the class in the second round anyway, the Pythons are more likely to replace some of the defensive talent they lost to the ISFL draft. DE is a slightly more pressing need than LB, but it's hard to turn down one of the absolute top prospects in the S33 class. Cussion is also controlled by an ISFL vet, which provides proven stability. The top DE prospects have appeared eager in their efforts to chat up the league, but there is something to be said for taking the known reliability of vets.

1.04) Tijuana Luchadores  TIJ - Daron Arnold - DT
The Luchadores feature one of the top offenses in the DSFL (at least on paper), and a well-rounded group at that. They will most likely be looking at defense in the draft. Specifically, Tijuana desperately needs fresh blood at LB and DT. Just missing out on Cussion has to sting, but fortunately the clear top DT in the class also happens to be one of the top prospects overall. It's a bit of a risk taking an ISFL rookie this high when there are still viable vets out there like Joe Smokes, but I can personally vouch for the person controlling Arnold that he will be a worthwhile pick. Plus, there are a few solid LB options that the Luchadores can probably target in round 2.

1.05) Minnesota Gray Ducks  MIN - Dax Dangerfield - CB
Minnesota boasts a solid QB-RB-WR triplet on offense, but they don't have much else. With so many needs to fill, it makes sense to just take the top player on the board outside of those 3 positions. Dangerfield checks all the boxes; high TPE prospect, position of need, and ISFL veteran. This could get turned on its head if Dangerfield backs out of his position switch, but with the request already being processed we'll assume it sticks.

1.06) Norfolk Seawolves  NOR - Leonardo McTurtle - DE
Norfolk boasts one of the most well-rounded rosters in the DSFL, with solid talent at almost every position on both sides of the ball. Key word there is "almost". Specifically, there are some holes on the defensive side. Norfolk would probably go with one of the elite CB's in this class if any of them make it here (or if a certain penguin updates their player/is willing to be drafted in the first round), but they also have a pressing need at DE where the Seawolves currently don't even have a player on the roster. McTurtle is the top DE prospect in the draft, and has been an enthusiastic rookie when speaking with teams. He seems like a good fit.

1.07) Kansas City Coyotes  KCC - The Stig - RB
Kansas City truly does not have any pressing needs. Not terribly surprising for a team drafting near the tail end of the draft. That being said, they had picked up The Stig off waivers for their postseason run last season and Stig enters the DSFL draft as one of the top players left on the board. It might not be the "optimal" pick, but it's close enough that the prior connection probably more than makes up the difference.

1.08) Dallas Birddogs  DAL - Bud R. Fingers - WR
Unlike their Ultimini opponent, Dallas exits S31 losing several players to the ISFL. Two RBs sit atop the prospect rankings, but that's one of the few positions the Birddogs are set in with John Riggins holding down the fort. What Dallas does need is a WR. This class isn't exactly flush with WR talent, and of the top two options there is a clear advantage for Fingers, who has the higher TPE and is controlled by an ISFL vet.

ROUND 2

2.01) Bondi Beach Buccaneers BBB - Videl Valor - RB
Having filled their biggest hole on defense in the first round, Bondi Beach now looks to fix their biggest issue on offense. This draft boasts several elite RB prospects, but the league is already saturated with RB talent so it's no surprise to see at least one fall this far. An argument could also easily be made for Gus Bus, but I'll give the mod to Valor's slight edge in TPE.

2.02) London Royals LON - Joe Smokes - LB
Several of the top players left match London's needs, so realistically this pick could easily go any of about five different ways. So why Smokes? The Royals badly need LB help more than any other position as they currently only have one on the roster, and Smokes is the top LB prospect remaining.

2.03) Portland Pythons POR - Marvin Toledo - WR
This is a tough pick. Portland badly needs both DE and WR help, and strictly speaking the remaining DE prospects are higher rated than the remaining WRs. However, there's really only one viable WR prospect left whereas there are at least 3 intriguing DE options. Banking on being able to snag one of the DE options in a later round, the Pythons take the clear top remaining receiver in Toledo.

2.04) Tijuana Luchadores TIJ - Nick Flint - LB
Just as Tijuana drew it up, there is still a solid LB prospect sitting there for them in the 2nd round in Flint. On top of filling a critical need for the Luchadores, Flint has been active as a rookie, which should be good for the locker room.

2.05) Minnesota Gray Ducks MIN - Greg Strongjaw - DE
As noted above, Minnesota has needs everywhere. At the moment, they don't even have a DE on the roster. The stars align for the Gray Ducks here as Strongjaw is both one of the top remaining prospects and fills a position of desperate need. Hard to argue with that.

2.06) Norfolk Seawolves NOR - Fairy de Pengu - CB
Pengu has been making GMs' jobs difficult. By opting to train in isolation, no one really knows where his skills are at. However, we do know Pengu has been training hard, and he is controlled by an ISFL vet. Norfolk badly needs CB help here, so they are likely to take the plunge.

2.07) Kansas City Coyotes KCC - D'Nickashaw Mangoldson - OL
As with their first pick, Kansas City has the luxury of choice as they don't have any critical holes to fill. Also as with their first pick, it makes sense to return one of their waiver pickups from last season in Mangoldson. On top of the player-team pairing already being familiar with each other, Mangoldson is one of the highest rated prospects left and plays a position that is thin across the league. Mangoldson isn't quite the best player available, but he's close enough that the familiarity with the team should make him the best choice.

2.08) Dallas Birddogs DAL - Kellan Frost - DE
The high end prospects are starting to get thin, and most of the best remaining options are RBs, which is the one position Dallas doesn't really need. What they do need is a DE since they do not currently have one on the roster. Luckily, Frost is one of the last remaining elite prospects, and he happens to play DE. It's a match made in heaven.
