1. This week will see the S32 Ultimus and Ultimini races begin in earnest. How did each team arrive at the playoffs? Were there any dark horse teams that went unexpectedly far, or any presumptive favorites that fell flat? Who do you think will win the final? If you’re writing this after the finals were decided, were you surprised by the outcome?

So I’m going to concentrate on the Ultimus race here – and being as biased as I can be playing for the team who again had the best record in the league, who ultimately, obviously, didn’t win the championship.  Looking at the two divisions; ASFC had the stronger of the four teams making it into the playoffs.  In the first round we saw the first surprise, although surprise is perhaps a little bit of a stretch with the New York Silverbacks winning in Austin.  A single field goal in the fourth prevented this one from going to OT.  It was nice to see the league winners not fall here.  But time for that.  So, the championship games.  In the NSFC it was a battle of the top two with the Fire Salamanders taking on the Liberty.  Both of these teams finished on 11 and 5 in the regular season.  Did the signing of RB2 Jay Cue Jr. make the difference here for Berlin?  Certainly not.  But Berlin did come out victors 16 to 12.  It was certainly more of a defensive showcase than an offensive one, both QBs struggling.  Flipping over to the ASFC, who would face Berlin in the Ultimus?  New York were on a high after defeating Austin and must have fancied themselves on the road again.  The 12-4 Outlaws, undefeated in their home stadium all year, had the best offensive and defensive records in the ISFL. So it was a surprise to no one who has played the game season after season to see the Silverbacks come out victorious in this one.  This game engine is laughable sometimes, but “that’s football” right.  So we had out final line up; the battle of the expansion teams.  I quite fancied Berlin here, I mean they had to be favourites.  But no, it was New York, withstanding a major comeback in the fourth from Berlin, who took away the Championship.  Congratulations must go to New York but a game where the QB wins OPoG with a 78 rating was a tough watch for the neutral I imagine.

I think the Silverbacks may have won it before, but as an Outlaw I don’t know where you’d check Ultimus winners in the index, so will have to trust my memory here.  Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not bitterness here.  Just all a bit “meh”.  The community here is great, but damn this game.

So onto the Ultimini.  Now I have history here, ex. London Royal and all of that.  Those were the days; long gone by the looks of it for London who finished 3 and 11.  Ouch.  This is actually going to be a “live” prediction as I type this.  I have no idea how things panned out.
So in the North, Portland dominated.  I imagine they will brush aside the Grey Ducks in the playoffs.  Both teams did have a 4-2 conference record…. But I’m sticking to my guns.  In the South Norfolk and Tijuana are way out in front.  Both beat each other in the regular season games.  Both are on decent win streaks.  I’m going for Tijuana to win here – they put down 458 points in the regular season, they have the team to prevail here.

So the Ultimini final – Portland against Tijuana.  And I’m going to say Tijuana will come out in top… lets go for 24-21.  Now I can check the index and see how close I got….

So Portland did make the final, and lose in the final, so I was right there.  I’m surprised to see a 20 point gap in favour of Norfolk in the North game, looks like the WRs had a great day.  So on the back of a confident thrashing of Tijuana, Norfolk winning Ultimini seems fair.  And I wasn’t too far off on the winning score.  So the team with the best record in the regular season can win the top prize, who knew – congratulations Norfolk!

a little explanation on this one: as WSBL CW didn't line up time-wise with either PBE CW or ISFL UW, I posted it to last week's PT in both leagues. With permission from PPT teams, I've linked WSBL CW again to count for 3 out of 4 tasks. I then completed one more task for PBE, which I've linked here to cover the 4th task.
