*Updates to ISFL Scorigami, Pick Six Records, and Wealth Inequality - infinitempg - 02-06-2022

It's been a while since I've made a media post - and those who know me know that I like to do in depth data analysis about slightly obscure things in this league. I've had a series on ISFL Scorigami (last updated last year here), a series on the Pick Six record book (interestingly also last updated last year here), and a series on ISFL Wealth Inequality (last updated a little under 13 months ago here) - and given the fact that it's been an entire year since these have been dusted off I figured now is a good time as any to take a new look. The great thing about doing it last year was that we were fresh on the sim-switch, meaning we didn't actually get to see any interesting data between DDSPF16 and DDSPF21. What will we see today?

ISFL SCORIGAMI

Behold, our new chart:

It's pretty hard to tell the difference here, but we've had 77 new Scorigamis since S27 W12. I'll list them all out below, but you can actually see many of them on the (now defunct) ISFL Scorigami Bot Twitter account here. This puts the league at a total of 700 unique scores in its history! The 700th score occurred in S33 W12 with the Colorado Yeti beating the Chicago Butchers by a score of 39-34.

The Twitter bot died sometime during S31, so I will list all the Scorigami that have occured between then and now. I'll also attach a bunch of data.

Some analysis before you see the data:
  • I don't think there's anything particularly interesting about the number of new Scorigami per season. It's been relatively stable since S17, and it doesn't appear that the new sim is more prone to wild scores.
  • Speaking of the new sim, it definitely seems to favor some scores more than other. We see that our #1 most common score (27-24) increased by 13 games since the last update, and (30-27) skyrocketed into the top 10 with 11 since the last update. (23-20) also had an increase of 11 since the last update.
  • The third most frequent score in NFL history of 17-14 interestingly does not appear in our top 10. In fact, it isn't even in the top 50 - a 17-14 score has only occurred 5 times in ISFL history. The score of 13-10 (#6 in NFL history) and 16-13 (#8 in NFL history) both only occurred 8 times. Finally, a 17-10 score (#9 in NFL history) has occurred only 11 times, enough to put it at T-40th in ISFL history.
  • Some interesting new scorigami to note:
    • S32 W6: NOLA 49 - 48 NYS - highest scoring game in ISFL history (and most points scored by a losing team)
    • S33 W9: YKW 48 - 42 NOLA - third highest scoring game in ISFL history
    • S29 W11: AUS 62 - 27 SJS - fourth highest scoring game in ISFL history (and only one in top 5 where a team scored more than 60)
    • S27 W16: HON 30 - 30 COL - highest scoring tie in ISFL history
    • S29 W7: SJS 26 - 26 AUS - second highest scoring tie in ISFL history
    • S31 W16 COL 69 - 13 SJS - nice
    • S28 W5 SAR 69 - 14 PHI - also nice
    • S33 W2 AUS 21 - 0 OCO - HOW?
    • S31 W16 CHI 14 - 3 BER - SERIOUSLY?

Pick Six Records

For those of you new to the league, my former player Micycle McCormick garnered the name "McPickSix" for the frequency of pick sixes he threw, often at the worst possible times. As I ventured into my second involuntary quarterback, the McPickSix followed - with Wolfie McDummy managing to throw even more pick sixes than Micycle did (though not as often). A brief correction allowed me to reclaim freedom from Wolfie being the #1 Pick Six king as 3 of his pick sixes were in uncounted playoff bye games. It was then noted that myself and @JBLAZE_THE_BOSS are the only users to have created two starting QBs at that point in the league's history, and that I still had 7 more pick sixes as a user than JBLAZE, 29 to 22.

Since then, @Oles has managed to join the cursed group of multi-QB users, but he has a long way to go (Kazimir Jr. has 10, Tyler has 5). Additionally, I had miscounted my personal pick sixes and actually had 30 at the time (28 in the regular season). But it turns out, it doesn't matter! Mike Boss Jr. managed to free my from my prison by throwing SIXTEEN pick sixes since the last update - placing JBLAZE solidly at the top of user pick sixes with 38.

The top 5 by user, post-season included (regular season):
  1. JBLAZE_THE_BOSS (2 QBs) - 38 pick sixes (35)
  2. infinitempg (2 QBs) - 30 pick sixes (28)
  3. bovovovo (1 QB) - 18 pick sixes (17)
  4. PigSnout (1 QB) - 18 pick sixes (17)
  5. flyeaglesfly29 (1 QB) - 17 pick sixes (16)

What is probably more notable is that Boss Jr.'s 16 additional pick sixes allowed him to break what might have been previously thought an unbreakable record - he is now the king of pick-sixes between the regular and postseason. The top 10:

Boss Jr.'s ability to break this record is almost certainly aided by the fact that he had the chance to play in more regular season games (16) and playoff games (up to 3) per season than previous record holder Borkus Maximus III (13 regular season + 2 post season). The additional postseason games seem to be what put him over, surprisingly - Maximus III still owns the regular season record!

There are a LOT of new names on each of these lists - and this can easily be traced to the sim change. Six of the top 10 ranked QBs on this list all played with both the new schedule and the new sim. Some players like Wolfie McDummy and George O'Donnell played with the new schedule but not so much with the new sim though - so what is really happening here? Let's analyze the seasons with the highest average pick sixes per game:

Of the top 10 seasons, SIX are in the new sim era. Season 33 is especially bad with a tremendous 2.23 pick sixes per week. So that should wrap this little analysis up, right? New sim = more pick sixes. Or does it?

One of the big meta changes in the new sim was the switch to absolutely yeeting the ball around the field. If we look at the average number of passing attempts per week:

The top 6 seasons are all from the new sim era. How does this affect our pick sixes?

Suddenly things become a lot less clear. The average quarterback does not in fact appear to be throwing more pick sixes because of the new sim. In fact, the worst seasons for quarterbacks are probably what should be expected - the first five seasons make up five of the top six on this list (and S12 was certainly not a good QB year either). S33 certainly shows up here as a poor QB season as well, though that seems to match with what we saw before.

So uh, what's happening here? I think we can pretty much square it up to the quality of quarterback play in the league, as the overall pick six per attempt rate over ISFL history has been relatively since S6 (outside the dark days of S11-13):
full size here

Plotting pick sixes versus attempts, we can see a loose correlation (coefficient 0.6886):

So I think it's reasonable to claim that the new sim has not made quarterbacks dumber or more prone to throwing pick sixes - it is simply the larger volume of passes that is causing this! Combine that with arguably a lower quality of QBs this year and we get the results we see. Is this a thorough statistical study of the content? Absolutely not - but I think it's something that was worth looking at.

Wealth Inequality in the ISFL Episode V: The Rich Strike Back

The last time we met, the overall wealth of the richest 5 users exceeded 2 billion ISFL dollars and matched the total combined wealth of the lowest 38.27% of users. We agreed this was, to some extent, kind of bad - though obviously wealth inequality in this online dot football league is not as damaging to society as a whole as real life wealth inequality is.

Well now, the richest 5 users make up nearly 2.6 billion ISFL dollars and have the equivalent wealth of the lowest 36.74% of users!

I think this is relatively the same enough that we can say the top 5 did not pull even more away from the rest of the crowd, though as a unit the top 5 did gain an immense amount of wealth.

Breakdown of the percentiles:
  • 10%: $2.00M → $2.46M (+$0.46M (+23.0%))
  • 25%: $5.00M → $5.00M (-)
  • 50%: $9.00M → $9.00M (-)
  • 75%: $14.00M → $14.85M (+$0.85M (+6.1%))
  • 90%: $28.70M → $27.67M (-$1.03M (-3.6%))
  • 99%: $149.23M → $190.63M (+$41.4M (+27.7%))
  • Top 5 (The 0.25%): $2.142B → $2.592B (+$450M (+21.0%))

Once again, the major gains in the economy were made by the top 1% while the middle class and lower class largely stagnated - just like the real world! Who said this wasn't a realistic simulation after all? Of course it is worth mentioning that in this league economy you actually have to do things in order to get more money as opposed to placing all your money in stonks and watching it grow (sorry for breaking that by the way), but the comparison still stands. Additionally it's worth mentioning that even the upper class did not fare well in the last year - in fact, they lost money overall. Overall, the total league economy ballooned from $25.646B last year to $32.899B, a growth of $7.253B or 28.3%. The user base only grew from 1662 users to 1930 users, a growth of 268 users or 16.1%.

Another way to look at inequality is by comparing the mean and median. I've gone over this before but just as a refresher, the mean can be skewed by outliers much like what we have here, so the median of our dataset is much more representative of the true "typical" user in the league. This is what the league looks like in this frame of reference:

The mean wealth has gone up by $2.285M, but our median wealth has actually remained at $9.00M - further emphasizing how the mean can distract from what's really going on.

Another worthwhile thing to mention - in the last installment there were only 17 users who had more than $150M of net worth. This number has increased to 25 users. We also have gone from 4 users above $300M net worth to a whopping 8 users! And this is not even including users like Laser who are high rollers down at the casino betting parlor.

I'm not entirely sure if there is a solution to be had here. I think there is a valid argument that this dataset is heavily polluted with inactive users, and that by looking at only active users we could get a better picture of the "true" league economy, but to be completely honest I'm way too lazy to do that right now. There's probably a way with the log and activity in the last 2 months or something but I'm not sure that will really help? That might be a future episode of Wealth Inequality.

So there lies my one-year-later set of updates. Should I have spent this time doing more productive things? Probably. But I didn't and here we are now Smile

RE: Updates to ISFL Scorigami, Pick Six Records, and Wealth Inequality - Duilio05 - 02-06-2022

Well done. always enjoy this. was just wondering myself if the new sim favors certain scores. Some weeks it seems a quarter of all the teams score the same total. S33 Week 11 three teams scored 31 points. S33 week 9 three teams scored 28. S33 week 6 three teams scored 31 points.

I hope to do a new installment of Contract$$ vs TPE soon myself.

The top 15 richest users should have to donate all their money to the rest of the users! That way #16 can rise to the top!

S32 W6: NOLA 49 - 48 NYS - highest scoring game in ISFL history (and most points scored by a losing team)

Very cool also pain

Can't wait for my 2nd QB to join the pick6 pain train

I didn't know ties were possible tbh.

RE: Updates to ISFL Scorigami, Pick Six Records, and Wealth Inequality - slate - 02-06-2022

Great read as always! By my count Boss Jr. only threw 90 interceptions in his entire career at QB across regular season and postseason, so 20 of those 90 being pick 6s seems like a really high rate to me (though also matches my subjective experience of the sims)! Any chance we could get a list of players sorted by pick 6s per interception, or pick 6s per attempt?
