(S36) Offseason Task - GlimsTC - 06-13-2022

(S36) Offseason Task
You have until the end of the offseason to complete the Offseason point task, so the deadline will be Sunday, June 26th, 2021 at 11:59PM EST.

Quick Rules:
  • You can earn up to a maximum of 10 TPE through any combination of the available Tier 1-3 tasks. Follow the word count rules specified for each tier and keep your submissions on topic.
  • Articles, graphics, or podcasts that have already been used to get media/graphics money cannot be submitted again for Ultimus Week credit (sorry – no double dipping!).
  • Podcasts can only be submitted for Tier 1 and 2 written tasks. A podcast must include 20 minutes of discussion for Tier 1 and 10 minutes of discussion for Tier 2 about the selected topic. If you make a podcast with someone else, it must be 20/10 minutes apiece.
  • As with PTs, graphics must show at least some effort (i.e. edits must be apparent, should be more than just text slapped on an image). Make sure to add any images you used in your graphic so we are aware of what you did.
Tier 1: Long Form Tasks (Must be 600+ words)
Choose ONE for 10 TPE.

1. The Season 35 Ultimus and Ultimini have officially come to an end. Congratulations to the the Norfolk Seawolves and Honolulu Hahalua for each winning their respective championships. How did each of the finalists in either the Ultimus or Ultimini arrive at the playoffs? Were there any teams that surprised or disappointed during the playoffs? Did the outcome of either championship game surprise you at all?

2. Tell us about your draft class. Is there anything that makes it special in comparison to other classes? Where did your fellow draftees land, how are they doing? Did anyone turn out to be an unexpected steal of that draft based on what you know today? Do you think anyone in your draft class will become a hall of famer? If you’re new to the league, how do you think your class will do? Where do you think people will get drafted to?

3. For any team, certain players and users have gone above and beyond, shaping the legacy of the franchise. Choose any ISFL or DSFL team and create a Mount Rushmore for that team. Who in your mind are the four most noteworthy figures of the team’s history? Why does each one of your included figures deserve that recognition, and how did each of them make their mark?

4. “Sim gonna sim” is a popular expression in the league. Write about teams that have been graced by the sim gods and had amazing performances despite statistical odds, and/or about teams that were considered favorites but may have dealt with some bad sim luck that hampered their efforts. How much of an impact did it have on their season(s)?

5. The league has a rich and fascinating history, and our perspectives on it differ from person to person. In 600 words or more, describe any significant moment in ISFL or DSFL history, whether you were around for it or not. Describe the context, the significant members, and the events. What exactly made this event so famous (or infamous) and why does it deserve to be remembered? Events might include championship wins, the inducting of players to the hall of fame, or even a league scandal.

6. Write 600 words or more on something about anything in the league that interests you. It could be related to statistics, a league issue that you take seriously, or a niche part of history that doesn’t fit neatly into either of the above categories. This must be directly related to the league, so don’t wax 600 words about your team’s participation on a Werewolf server or something.

Tier 2: Short Form Tasks (Each must be 300+ words)
Choose up to TWO for 5 TPE each.

7. This task is exclusive to non-recreate rookies of the S35 class and later. In 300 words or more, how has your experience been in the league? Who have you met that has made your time here more fun, friendly, and exciting? Have you been satisfied with your player’s early start? What was it like being drafted for the first time? Do you have any comments or suggestions for the entire league that you think should be implemented?

8. With awards season upon us, make up an award for your player win for something not on the football field?

9. Through a random lottery drawing, you have been named the league's new commissioner for a day. Congrats! What improvements would you make to the league if you had the power to do whatever you wanted?

10. Write a short biography or story about your player. This could include background about how they came to the ISFL and how they’ve done so far, a story about their role in an exciting game, or anything else related to their experience in the league.

11. Write about your team’s biggest rivalry and what makes it so fierce. Is the competition founded in statistics and the team’s recent performance, or is it a rivalry that developed over time during the team’s history that would exist regardless of statistics?

12. Choose a team or player to write about that isn’t your own. What did they do well in the last season? Have they shown any drastic improvements from previous years? What could they do better?

13. Expansion Expansion Expansion! Tell us why you think the league should expand / not expand or include any ideas (in words) for team branding ideas you have or team locations.

14. Describe your player and/or team’s journey through this latest season. What were the highlights? What were the lower points? What might you have done differently? What are your expectations for next season?

Tier 3: Written/Graphics Tasks (Each must be either 150+ words or a graphic)
Choose up to FOUR for 2.5 TPE each.

15. Going to Disneyland! Who was the Ultimus Game MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disneyland. (Written Task)

16. This task is exclusive to recreate/non-recreate rookies of the S36 class and later. The season is over and the draft is coming up. What do you bring to a team, and why should a team choose to take a chance on you next season? (Written Task)

17. Your team has announced that they will be laying ground on a new stadium next season. What additions would you like to see included in it. (Written Task)

18. Written Option: which teammate of yours is the ultimate team player and why? How does this person exhibit selflessness and put the team first? Are they a great locker room presence who encourages others? Do they play an important but unappreciated role on the team which doesn't receive much recognition for awards? Graphic Option: Create a graphic of your player with your teammate who exhibits a team-friendly attitude.

19. Written Option: If your player had a show starring them, what would the plot be? Graphic Option: Create the cover art for your player’s show

20. Make a scouting report for any of the ISFL or DSFL draftees. Show their stats, abilities, TPE, or highlights. (Written or Graphic Task)

21. What are your thoughts on the sim engine? Do you think that it is better than DDSPF16? (Written Task)

22. You’re in charge of entertainment for the Ultimus or Ultimini half-time show. What would you do? (Written Task)

23. Create a billboard, magazine cover, unique trading card, or video game cover depicting a one of the league's stars. (Graphic Task)

24. If you could create a team using any active players in the league, what would that team look like? Would you build a group of all-stars to contend in the next Ultimus, or a team full of jokesters for the fun of it? Describe the roster and why you chose the players you did. (Written or Graphic Task)

25. Imagine your current position was not available to be picked when you created your player. What other position would you have picked, and why? (Written Task)

26. Football is a game that has been going on for a while, loved by fans all over. But what if you were able to make some rule changes? Talk us through your new version of football, and what would be different and why? (Written Task)

27. What team do you think has the best branding in the league? What team do you think could use a refresh? Why? (Written or Graphic Task)

28. Written Option: You've been given the opportunity to create a new team in the ISFL! Describe what you'll be calling this team, why you picked the location you did, the colors you'll use for the uniforms, and anything else about the branding you'd like to add. Graphic Option: Create a graphic showcasing the logo, name, location, and colors of your team.

29. Choose one existing award. Tell us why you think a certain player should win that award this season. Stats, or anything else possible should be used to support your case. (Written or Graphic Task)

30. Awards have been a subject of controversy for a while in the league. Tell us your ideas on how awards process can be fixed. (Written Task)

31. Affliate PT from either SHL/PBE/WSBL. The Weeks must match with the timeframe of this Offseason Task. And you may only use a max of 1.

Please contact a member of the PPT team if you need clarification on any of the prompts or need help with anything listed here in general!

4.

Let me tell you the tale of the Portland Pythons and how the sim decided that this fabled defense would crumble at the most inopportune time. We found ourselves in the NSFC DSFL Championship game in Season 35. Up to this game, the Portland defense had been dominant, ranking 2 or better in every stat imaginable and creating fear in opponents and doubt about their gameplan. No team could pass or run on the Pythons and an early lead would lead to victory after victory based on their ability to shut down teams alone.

However, the sim had decided that this dominance would end in a spectacular fashion. The Pythons were confident up 27-7 with half the third quarter left. No team had been able to breach their wall in the second half that season and they had no reason to this game. And then it happened. For whatever reason, the Pythons stopped being able to tackle at the line. Rushes of 7 yards, then 8, then 16, then 18 all in a row! An easy touchdown for KCC followed by a quick 3 and out for the Pythons. More double digits runs that led to a field goal for the Coyotes gave the Pythons their first sign of trouble. Undeterred, the Snakes grabbed a quick field goal to try and cement their lead. The fourth quarter would have different plans.

The Coyotes woke up that quarter and gashed the Pythons for yards through both the air and on the ground. To make matters worse for our dear Snakes, the fumble bug began to bite. They could not hold on to the ball and when they did, it was only for a few short plays. The Pythons began to panic as the score grew ever close and the Coyotes gained more and more momentum. Huge plays were allowed as the Pythons went into a full downward spiral. A 32 yard run, a 15 yard pass, and multiple small runs eating up the clock. There was no end to the misery as the Pythons watch their cushy lead be systematically decimated. And then the penalties. The refs decided the game was over with a few well-timed calls in the Coyotes favor. But the worst was yet to come.

With a single strike the Coyotes overcame the deficit and found themselves in the lead by 4 with 00:40 seconds to spare. McCoy was up to the challenge as was the impressive Python receiving corp but they would never get the chance. A few missed passes set the mood for the drive but on the third play is when the end truly came. Saperstein, a menace the entire season for quarterbacks in both conferences, was finished with the resistance. Taking matters into his own hands, the Defensive End skirted past the Portland Offensive line and found his mark, Boone McCoy. But was that enough? The sim certainly didn’t think so as it added a forced fumble and fumble recovery to Saperstein’s already impressive stat line. With no timeout lefts, the Coyotes would only need to kneel the ball to end it and send themselves to the Ultimini.

How the sim decides a defense that allowed 314 yards per game in the regular season to suddenly allow 445, and most in the second half, I will never understand. But that is how the sim rolls and it will continue to haunt teams forever. How can we begin to combat these discrepancies? Some have suggested ritualistic sacrifices, others a monetary offering. But me, I suggest we simply enjoy the ride. It is, after all, how upset can still happen. Am I still upset? Yes, yes I asm. But I will move on and look towards the future. And so should all of us the sim has decided are unworthy.

The S36 Draft class is set to be chosen at the S36 ISFL draft this Friday June 17. It currently includes 78 eligible players, down from 130 creates at or around the trade deadline last season. This is one of the deepest classes in recent memory and it affords an opportunity both to look back on where these initial creates went in the DSFL and where they could go this Friday in the ISFL.
First up it’s time to look at the wide receivers of the class. There are 10 draft eligible receivers in this class. They are, in order of TPE earned as of the last update:
Zaphod Beeblebrox-Kansas City Coyotes
Austin Morley-Kansas City Coyotes
Octavio Perez-Kansas City Coyotes
Mandrews McHollywood-Kansas City Coyotes
Thomas Robinson-Norfolk Seawolves
Don Dobbler-Tijuana Luchadores
Derrick Prince-Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Rockbot Rockbo-Minnesota Grey Ducks
Rerry Jice-Dallas Birddogs
Drew Stowe-Tijuana Luchadores
So, 10 intotal to each fill one of 78 slots. 4 players from the Coyotes, 2 from Tijuana, and 1 from Dallas, Minnesota, Norfolk, and Bondi Beach. The top 4 earners in TPE all come from the air raid offense in Kansas City and it’s expected around the league that they are also the first 4 taken in the upcoming draft. League expectations also state that anywhere from 3 to 5 of these receivers could be taken in the first, depending on when the run of receivers starts. If there is little movement before the 7th or 8th pick then expect to only see Perez and Morley taken in the first, but if some predictions are correct then Perez, Morley, Beeblebrox, McHollywood, and Dobbler could all be gone by the time the 15th pick rolls around.
As for team predictions the most often cited teams for receivers are as such:
Orange County
Colorado
Austin
New York
Chicago
So when these teams picks roll around, it would not be a shock to see one of the top receivers go off the board. Defensive players usually have priority in the higher rounds, but in a class this deep anyone could go anywhere.

Another interesting position group this year are the defensive lineman, both the defensive ends and tackles. The top prospects (200+ TPE) are as such:
JR Frankenstero-Dallas Birddogs
Jean-Ralphio Saperstein-Kansas City Coyotes
Harley Andrews-London Royals
Aqeel Steel-Minnesota Grey Ducks
Mike Scott-Minnesota Grey Ducks
Justin Cloud-Kansas City Coyotes
Nathan Meagher-Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Xavier Valorian-Portland Pythons
Charles Chapman-Dallas Birddogs
Absolute Unit-Portland Pythons
Joseph Reed-London Royals
Fat Jack-Bondi Beach Buccaneers
12 lineman, half ends and half tackles.
Perfectly balanced as all things should be. Dallas has 2, Kansas City has 2, London has 2, Minnesota has 2, Bondi Beach has 2, and Portland has 2. Portland lead the DSFL in sacks with 47 and Kansas City was right behind them with 46, with Jean-Ralphio Saperstein leading the league with an incredible 18.
Defensive players are always needed at the ISFL and defensive lineman are the most needed of those. If I had to guess this will be the biggest group taken in the 1st round. Frankenstero, Saperstein, Steel, Valorian, and Chapman. I’d list the teams that need lineman but it would be all of them so we’ll just say that there’s a lot of room for all of these elite prospects.
I’m no good at mock drafts but the players I picked to go in the first are as follows:
Octavio Perez
Mandrews McHollywood
Jean-Ralphio Saperstein
Teemo Swift
J.T Kurbis
Sconnie McSix
Xavier Valorian
Austin Morley
Suggs Upshar II
Leandre Diarra
Mister Hogmally
Quendyn Quarterstorm
Fred Edison
Kevin McThumper
So there it is. The top players in some of the top positions of the S36 class.

RE: (S36) Offseason Task - stein - 06-13-2022

Prompt 8:
There are multiple awards for off the field activity that Cob Corning would surely win. One such award is for Most Money Spent on Restoring and Acquiring Corn Fields. To date, Cob has spent $2,500,000 on acquiring the land rights to corn fields and buying land to be turned into corn fields through his Cornfield Restoration and Acquisition Project (CRAP). As everyone knows, Corn People lost most of their land during the Corn War. Interestingly, after the war, corn fields now take up a far lesser percentage of Ohio land mass than they did prior to the war. This success on the part of the human armies is largely credited to the ineptitude of the General of the Corn Armies, Cornelius Corning the 1st (who is incidentally the great great grandfather of our very own Cob Corning) and to the high flammability of corn fields. Ohio has approximately 28.69 million acres of land and has only 3.55 million acres of corn fields. This of course means that the Corn People control only 12.37% of Ohio. This may seem like a small percentage but it’s really not. Zoom into any satellite image of Ohio and you will most likely zoom into a corn field. Many Corn People see this as a threat to their people and have started buying land to turn into more corn fields. It's estimated that the Corn People (who are relatively poor, excluding Cob) have so far acquired 2 acres of land. It's for this reason that Cob would win the award for Most Money Spent on Restoring and Acquiring Corn Fields; no humans are doing it and the other Corn People that do are too poor to come close to the amount that Cob contributes. Despite this, Cob has a current net worth of $40 million, causing many people to ask why Cob isn't doing more. And to that he says "Sorry, we've already hit the 300 word requirement for this prompt."

Prompt 17:
The most important addition to the Hawks stadium would be a new Temple of the Golden Hawk. Whenever something good happens to the team it's not through hard work, dedication, stats, roster, sim luck, or anything like that. Good things are all a direct result of us Hawks praying to the Golden Hawk for blessings. Likewise when anything bad happens like bad sim luck, an inexplicably bad season *cough 34 cough*, fumbles, interceptions, whatever... that is the direct result of us not praying to the Golden Hawk enough. A bigger and better temple would result in bigger and better praise which would result in a bigger and better blessings from the Golden Hawk which would result in a bigger and better season for the Hawks. It obviously needs to be made of solid gold to honor the Golden Hawk. That's going to be really expensive so we'll be spending every team members salary on this goal until its achieved. All Hawks should ignore this prompt if they agree.

Prompt 27:
Having been through two awards seasons and nominated to represent an ISFL team in one of them, I believe I'm finally qualified to answer this question honestly. Abolish the awards system. The reason the awards system is so rife with controversy is because it's an entirely subjective system that the league tries to treat objectively, which is impossible. It's entirely opinion based and it's impossible to represent everyone's opinions. In fact, I would argue that we as a league are currently doing our best to make sure as few people's opinions are considered as possible. From the start, we get one person per team making nominations for an entire league full of people. From those nominations, another tiny subset of the league community get to actually vote. In trying to treat this subjective matter objectively, the awards nominators fetishize stats and ignore everything else, which makes the awards system little more than a circle jerk for power positions (QB, RB, WR, LB). In fact, if you try to fix the awards system by nominating anything but those positions for MVP, OPotY, etc, they get immediately cut from the nominations as a matter of course. Either let everyone vote in the awards system or pull the plug.

21. What are your thoughts on the sim engine? Do you think that it is better than DDSPF16?

I joined the league just as we switch to the most recent simulation engine, so what we currently have is all that I know. I will say that the change is probably a very good thing. From what I have been informed is that the previous simulation engine was largely figured out and that there were some positions, like offensive line, that were deemed worthless for a player to be occupying that position. But they are now relevant. Since we are a few seasons into the new simulation engine, it has what you would want in a simulation engine. It has a fair bit of randomness that feels like your team is not completely doomed if you are playing against a roster that is "far and away a better TPE". This allows for playoffs and individual games to feel far more meaningful and allows upsets and that is good for entertainment and in return is good for the league. With these positives that does not mean that this simulation engine does not have it's own set of flaws. The one initial issue that I had with the game was the lack of display of post game stats. This has since been remedied with displaying of the box scores. Kudos to the simulation team for adding that bit. Overall from what I have heard the switch was largely a success and an improvement over the old simulation engine. Not sure how I feel about the changes to the removal of individual positional awards.

25. Imagine your current position was not available to be picked when you created your player. What other position would you have picked, and why?

I would have been a Full back. I would have been like Tampa Bay Legend Mike Alstott, a true threat when running the ball. I would have actually made running the ball as a full back. However I would also have the ability to ground and pound everyone on the field. The main reason I would like to be a fullback is because they are just offensive linemen with hands. They also serve up quite a considerable amount of pancakes to all of the friends on the team. That’s why being a fullback would be amazing. It would also like to see the ball every once in a while with handoffs and would live to show off my celebration dance that I have been planning on showing off. It is called the stumpy shake. I will leave that to the imagination of what that is but I will likely get fined for it. Kids will need to avert their eyes from the Television because of it but it will be good for the environment

27. What team do you think has the best branding in the league? What team do you think could use a refresh? Why?

I think the team that has the best branding in the league is the Colorado Yeti.  I would consider the Yeti to be my favorite branding because of their use of black as a focal point with how colorful this logo is by using the Colorado state flag. Everything is on a red backdrop in front of which is the Colorado flag’s iconic C outlined in royal blue in front of what is assumed to be a yeti but it is actually just a silhouette of what is unknown or the missing link. The team that I would like to have a rebrand or the logo that I like the least is the Yellow Knife Wraiths. It’s the worst logo in the league. It feels more like a skeleton than ghost-like and just feels like a played out version of the NFL Raiders and is boring and has been done over and over across many leagues.

@Reedy0rNot

Big Joe Reed was a very late season 34 waiver pickup by the London Royals.  He was on the roster for two games, but only able to start the last game of the season.  The Royals D Line had been struggling all season to stop the rush and open holes for the pass rush.  Reed popped up on the waiver wire – a strong, intelligent nose tackle ready to take command of the center of the D line.  He came in with an instant impact with 2 tackles and 2 tackles for a loss making a name for himself right off the bat.

Season 35 Reed was able to start all 14 games, and kept up his pace of tackles- averaging exactly 2 per game all year long.  He had big games in weeks 13 and 14, where he registered 4 tackles in the first game, and 2 tackles for loss and a sack in the last week of the season.  It was his only sack of the year, but unlike DE’s, the stat line of a DT, especially a nose tackle, never tells the true story of a player’s value.  Throughout the weeks of s35 Reed was constantly hitting the gym and the tape room- improving across the board in nearly every metric of an athlete’s strength, agility, and play recognition.  In the locker room, players as well as coaches praised Reed for always reflecting on the success or failure of the latest game and then jumping right into conditioning for the week to follow.

Facing a potential ISFL draft going into s36 Reed would be served well to keep doing what he is doing.  Any of his failures or miscues on the line can often be attributed to not having much help and feeling like he has to do all the heaving lifting himself.  Another concern analysts may have of Reed is the feeling of the “long wait” between obvious impact place.  Big stats are sexy and make headlines, but every good linebacker knows when their DT is consistent in holding the Oline open for them.  Every good running back knows who not to try and push past on the D line.  In that sense, Reed excels at making his teammates look good, which the player needs to recognize as his own successes as well in between sacks and big stops behind the line.  Reed has the right team-oriented mindset and if he keeps training, practicing, and reviewing game tape he can easily become a terror on an ISFL D line for years to come.

From high school through the first year of college ball, Milescu was actually a wide receiver.  Hard to picture now, but looking back on things his first five years of organized football were spent on the offense.  It came about fairly naturally.  Like many kids playing street ball growing up, games were not so much about positions and formations, rather one kid at qb throwing at 5-8 receivers running back and forth across the field.  It was feast or famine.  Every pass was either a TD or and INT waiting to happen.  When Milescu was a freshman in high school and trying out for the JV football team, running as fast as he could downfield to catch the ball was really all he knew.  His speed was impressive to the coach, and he made the team.

In high school, Milescu was always a good receiver, but never… great.  Although he had speed, he tended to have issues catching over the shoulder on deep routes.  He was most successful as a slot receiver, catching quick slants and fighting for a few extra yards.  Recognizing that he was slowly falling behind the pace and expectation of a wide receiver, Milescu often thought to himself “its just so much easier to catch the ball on slants, curls, anything where I can face the QB and react”.

Milescu did manage to wrangle up a football college scholarship, though not to any power house of a school.  He first season was a lot like high school.  He played WR3/4, and often in the slot for short outside curls or inside slants.  During the offseason in a performance meeting with the coach, Milescu told him his thoughts- “I bet I could catch more passes if I could just stand deep downfield every play.”  To his surprise, the coach laughed.  “Ever thought about Safety?”  As it would happen, the college coach had observed the same shortcoming as a WR that MIlescu felt about himself, but had also observed the player’s ability to change his route to save collapsing plays, zig and zag between defenders to extend plays, and be able to run the width of the field in impressive speed.

Sophomore year in college Milescu decided to give it a try and start at Safety.  And the rest, is history.
