*Season 3 rookie holdouts - sapp2013 - 09-01-2017

Recently many rookies have decided to ‘hold-out’ if they are drafted by a team that they do not wish to play for. This all started with Clegane from the season 2 draft where he would only sign a contract if it was with the Orange County Otters, or he would hold out until the season 3 draft where he would repeat the process. With the huge amount of depth at Offensive Line during that draft, it wasn’t too much of an issue for one player to hold out for a specific team. The incoming rookies may see this as an opportunity to pick a team rather than the other way around. However, with less depth than the past two years, some prospects may be disappointed with what team may choose them during the draft. Could all of these hold-out prospects be attempting to sway the odds in their favor, or are they looking for a reverse-psychology effect, where these statements may help raise their draft value by other teams wanting to ruin their ‘plan’? We caught Matthew Vincent and Avon Blocksdale as they were leaving the Lakers versus Bucks basketball game in Los Angeles and asked Vincent on his thoughts of these rookie hold outs:

“I don’t quite understand what they are doing. Of course players have preferences for where they want to go and play for, and if they tell you otherwise, they are probably lying. But they are in no place to be leveraging this on the GMs. There is a reason why we have such flexibility with our rookie deals. If you don’t want to play with the team that drafted you, sign a freakin’ one year deal! It’s not rocket science. Suck it up and play the game.”

Vincent declined to comment after that statement. With big names such as Chambers III, Sandoval, and Sims all voicing their displeasure with the possibility of playing for unwanted organizations, There may be a shake up in the draft before we even get to it, which will be on September 6th at 5pm PST. We will see where these prospect land, who will be shuffled down to the DSFL, and who will be the next star to arise from this rookie class.
