It's been a long journey getting to this point. Just a few short weeks of his 30th birthday, Trae Waynes - now operating under the pseudonym Wae Traynes (original, I know) - is joining a new football league, looking for a fresh start.
He's still got the speed, even if injuries have slowed him a bit. At his peak he could do the 40 yard dash in 4.31 seconds. It's a developmental league, right? You don't need to be the fastest guy on the field necessarily, even if you are older than the rest of the competition.
All he needs to do is get his feet wet. Reacclimate to the daily grind of football once again.
"I can do this," he tells himself in the locker room before his first official practice with the London Royals.
He went undrafted - something about his paperwork not being filed on time, or whatever - and was picked up by this international team. He had never been to Europe before the waiver claim. Now he's thousands of miles away from his hometown of Kenosha, Wisconsin. But he's ready to prove himself.
He has to.
