*S28 ISFL Retrospect Pt. 1 - dude_man - 08-07-2022

Hello all,

Welcome to me looking back at the S28 ISFL Draft Class (Part 1). As I’m writing this, obviously some time has changed and I figured what better way to look at the “last” (good) Reddit class that is obviously a career’s length difference. So safe to say that we can break this all down.

You may ask, dude_man, why are you even looking to analyze this? Well first of all, I need the money it’s great to see where the league has been and how it was viewed back when I was a rookie in the league as you can say now that I’m a sim league elder. Second, it’s also interesting to see where GMs of the time valued certain positions or even users of the league. It was during a time of the sim engine switch, so certain positions that were normally not as important were buffed, or certain popular positions didn’t pan out as well. Regardless, why don’t we break all the picks down, shall we? This will only go into the first 2 rounds. You can read the rest of the draft retrospect here.

1. BAL - Bigred1580 - Luke Quick - WR (Max TPE: 1362)

Bigred is a well known commodity around the league. Having this be his 2nd player, it was already established that BR would be a solid pick in any capacity. With the Hawks having both the top 2 picks, it was pretty obvious where they were going to go with these picks. But in which order, it was a toss up. Quick would be asked to be called up instantly after his one inaugural season with the Coyotes and has played his whole career with the Hawks currently.

Grade: A+

2. BAL - inifinitempg - Busch Goose - RB (Max TPE: 1518)

The Hawks select the greatest goose of all time with the 2OA pick. Infi being a legit HoF user, this pick made too much sense for a team that went through a purge of the team, including the LR. Busch’s choice of clauses and media pieces of threatening to leave the team has rather been a meme throughout their career and it’s rather evident they’ll be a Hawk for the remainder of their career. Obviously a great pick here.

Grade: A+

3. OCO  - Gragg9 - Anton Bruckner - CB (Max TPE: 1041)

The highest pick of the new users, it’s not too difficult to see why Gragg9 was selected so highly. He made fantastic media pieces leading up to the draft, including one where he would mock the other mock drafts that were posted, including my own satire mock! Gragg would spend 2 seasons down with the Grey Ducks including being selected by OCO (3 must have been the lucky number). His tenure included being GM of OCO and a big part of what the Casino department is now. I think this pick was a solid one for the Otters and am glad to know that he is back in the league!

Grade: A

4. PHI - xtitanmvpx - Xavier Walls - DE (switched to LB) (Max TPE: 1294)

The Liberty here selects Walls with the 4OA pick. I have known Titan as a teammate with the Hahalua and I have nothing but good things to say about him. With that being said, Xavier didn’t finish his career with the Liberty, but played the majority of his time and career with them. I think this was a solid pick for them.

Grade: B+
____________________________________________________________________________

5. ARI - Pib - Glenn Smart - DE (switched to LB) (Max TPE: 1158)

This former DSFL co-MDM was a great pick for the Outlaws. Although he’s been IA on the back half of their career, he’s been a solid contributor for the team and continues to lurk in the Outlaws LR from time to time. It would be great to see my former PPT member come back to the league at some point in the near future.

Grade: B+
____________________________________________________________________________

6. NYS MachineEarnedRuns - Mongo - DE (Max TPE: 591)

The first of the “busts” in this class, Mongo would be an okay pick for the Silverbacks. Having a good convo with New York, the team had high hopes that this user would pan out as they were highly recommended from the PBE (before the cheating and claiming fake TPE) and BBB. However, that was not the case and would shortly go IA after a couple seasons. He was later traded for Accka down the road with the Second Line, so I think this pick was an okay one for them.

Grade: C
____________________________________________________________________________

7. SJS - j00 - Juno Hoo - CB (Max TPE: 1100)

j00 was an interesting pick here overall. He was very dedicated at the time and knowing him during his time with Tijuana, I knew that the media and persona he had was always role playing. However, that would take a toll on him and his activity in the league. Between the controversial tweets and media, HO would get involved rather constantly. With all that being said, he was earning rather well up until then, and I think at the time, this was a good pick for the Sabercats after losing Kotasa to the Outlaws. However, he only played through his rookie contract before he decided to be a journeyman CB jumping to a couple different teams.

8. YKW - Skorch - Andrew Warthol - DE (Max TPE: 351)

I know this pick definitely hurt the Wraiths. From what I had heard about this user, it was nothing but great things. Looking like a star DE, the Wraiths banked on the interest of the league as well as his really good earning. However, they would go IA right after they were drafted due to IRL matters. I would love to see them back, but as far as a rating for this pick is concerned, not too good.

Grade: D+
____________________________________________________________________________

9. BER - noanic - Troy Abed - WR (Max TPE: 1281)

Noanic was a great pick here for the Fire Salamanders. QB turned WR, he was a great addition for the team as he has played with them his whole career. Although he is IA now, he used to do great graphics for the league back in the day. I hope he can come back as well, as he was one of the only people who said that they enjoyed my podcasts from back in the day.

Grade: A

10. CHI - firstfray - Dexter Hall - LB (Max TPE: 1214)

I haven’t had many interactions with FF, but I know he’s a good dude from what I’ve seen and known of him. The most notable being the fact that he had to clean the mess up that is Amadan. Honestly like a lot of the Chicago guys, excluding Muford cause he is big stinky. Honestly they did really well with this pick.

Grade: A
____________________________________________________________________________

11. COL - Modern_Duke - Manhattan Project - DE (Switched to RB then OL later) (Max TPE: 1340)

MD was a really good pick for the Yeti here. Being super open to swapping, he went from DE to RB in his rookie season, to the eventual OL position where he now dominates. Again, I haven’t interacted much with MD, but I have heard good things about him as well, and this pick was a slam dunk for them and has been for the last several seasons.

Grade: A+
____________________________________________________________________________

12. HON  - z0rem - Prof. Godfrey Gravity - DT (Max TPE: 329)

The last of the true busts, z0rem would be considered the big “what if” as they were looking at a few prospects at this spot, including yours truly. They were highly recommended by one of their WR members, and in hindsight, was a decent pick for them. But with how the sim is and the effect for the team at the time, it would prove to haunt the Hahalua for the foreseeable future.

Grade: D
____________________________________________________________________________

13. NOLA - dude_man - Cade Williams - OL (Switched to DT eventually) (Max TPE: 1495)

I can’t and won’t say too much on this pick. Before the sim transfer, OL was even more of a niche position as you didn’t need to have max earning one to have a really good OL. So grabbing one in the top was considered a reach. Now that we have 8 or so seasons of the new sim, it’s been evident that you can never have enough human OL. Especially with how much OL Bots cost to the salary cap as well as human OL are just that significantly better. I think the Second Line had a great pick here that stayed with them for over 7 seasons. NOLA will always be my home, and I appreciate everything they have done for me.

Grade: A
____________________________________________________________________________

14. BAL - UltimateYeehaw - Chunt The Badger - WR (Max TPE: 756)

UY was a decent and logical choice here. At the time, she was a max earner that was connected to iStegosauraz (being her SO) so it just made sense and was a surprise that she dropped this far. Although they went IA on the back half of their career, she was a solid part of the Hawks’ and Silverbacks’ teams.

Grade: B-
____________________________________________________________________________

We are now onto the 2nd round of the draft. There’s still a lot of great talent on the board, so we shall see the studs and duds of this round.
____________________________________________________________________________

15. PHI - Amulos - Romulus Roman - S (Max TPE: 922)

Amulos was a teammate of mine back in the Tijuana days. Was always engaging and I’m glad to know he enjoyed the league. Although their cap was on the low end, he has played with Liberty for their whole career, and that may be worth more than the high cap and then leaving after a few seasons.

Grade: A-
____________________________________________________________________________

16. AUS - JKortesi81 - Bayley Cowabunga - WR (Max TPE: 1215)

JK is the “get off my lawn” old man in the sim league. Dude has done a lot for the league, and he’s seen a lot I would imagine. ISFL (or NSFL as it used to be called before) has changed quite a bit during that time frame. And he’s been Media Head for a decent portion of it. Played majority of his time with Austin, this was a great pick for them and he’s still earning to stay alive with Honolulu.

Grade: A
____________________________________________________________________________

17. OCO - shrub02 - Bender Rodriguez - TE (Switched to LB) (Max TPE: 1454)

These next 3 picks are ridiculously good. Beginning with shrub, this man has been with OCO the whole time and I even drafted him in the PBE since I knew he was worth the pick at the time. I’ll always have a soft spot for him and I know he’s a good dude through and through. Very great pick here for the Otters.

Grade: A+
____________________________________________________________________________

18. SAR - FootballIsCool - Stumpy Jones - OL (Max TPE: 1538)

The highest earning OL ~~and my earning arch-nemesis~~. FIC is a known commodity throughout sim leagues. Each league being the sport he’s associated with (BasketballIsCool, hockeyiscool) he’s usually a max earner there. And this was no exception here. Having the highest cap of the class, Sarasota nailed this pick here as they have been a top OL the last few seasons. Easily a slam dunk pick here.

Grade: A+
____________________________________________________________________________

19. BER - Laser - Dexter Zaylren - QB (Max TPE: 1518)

This pick could have been higher, if Laser had stayed around longer. Not saying it was a bad pick by any means, it honestly makes sense, but the Fire Salamanders were going on a rebuild stage during Laser’s prime, and he wanted to capitalize on a HoF career. 3 really solid seasons for them is good especially with the fact they made it to the Ultimus in their 2nd season with him at the helm. Laser is a fantastic dude and all around great guy. Great pick for Berlin here.

Grade: A-
____________________________________________________________________________

20. NOLA - Vaelynn - Remus Roman - S (Switched to RB then back S) (Max TPE: 903

The other twin between the Roman brothers. I was briefly with Vaelynn when he was drafted. At the time the pick made a lot of sense, as he was viewed as the RB of the future since Shue’s RB was regressing. However, he would leave for Free Agency to join his brother in Philadelphia once his rookie contract expired. No fault to NOLA, but for value, this pick doesn’t help their case.

Grade: B-
____________________________________________________________________________

21. BAL - King Jellyfish - Makoa Mahi'ai - TE (Switched to CB eventually) (Max TPE: 1332)

Frankly my interactions with KJ are not that much if at all. All I know is that he lives and breathes the Hawks, and that in my mind makes this a really solid pick for Baltimore. With a solid 1332 TPE earned, this was a good one.

Grade: A+
____________________________________________________________________________

22. YKW - maupassant - Erik Gaare - QB (Switched to RB) (Max TPE: 335)

Man, the Wraiths can’t seem to catch a break with this draft so far. With Skorch, and now maupassant, we’re talking about one of the 2 lowest earning players in the class. They missed out on Lonnie Jackson (we’ll go more in detail in Part 2) who has earned almost a 1000 more TPE.

Grade: D
____________________________________________________________________________

23. OCO - Duilio05 - Sam the Onion Man - WR (Max TPE: 1274)

The former casino head was a solid pick here for the Otters. A rather known entity, Orange County needed some stability in the position here, and he did deliver on that. Although he didn’t stay with them their whole career, this pick made a lot of sense and was a really good selection here regardless.

Grade: A-
____________________________________________________________________________

24. CHI - Painted - Tim Soulja - S (Switched to CB) (Max TPE: 1335)

Painted. Listen, I can say one thing about this man. Stinky. But in all seriousness this was a great pick for the Butchers and is now the current GM for them after taking over from crodyman. So this was a slam dunk pick for them as well. Chicago has killed it so far this draft with firstfray and now Painted.

Grade: A+
____________________________________________________________________________

25. COL - Alcott - Cole Maxwell - S (Switched to WR) (Max TPE: 1319)

Alcott is another user who I am not too familiar with. But he’s been with the Yeti his whole career and that’s a great pick with where he’s taken at in this selection. Really well done by Colorado here with their first 2 picks.

Grade: A+
____________________________________________________________________________

26. HON - bex - Raeni Clarke - QB (Switched to CB) (Max TPE: 1203)

Bex. What more to say from this former ISFL commissioner? The Hahalua wanted a familiar name with this pick. And what better option for them? She was and has been an integral part of the history in the ISFL and it is always a treasure to see a Bex sighting from her every once in a while. She had a decent career earning for TPE and played a few seasons with the Hahalua. I think this was a solid pick here for them.

Grade: B+
____________________________________________________________________________

27. NOLA - JPach - IsHe... ReallyInvisible - QB (Switched to OL eventually) (Max TPE: 1018)

JPach. The Sim God if you will. JPach was fairly known around the league as well since he was one of the biggest proponents for the sim engine switch. Having also been an HO member for a period of time, JPach made it evident he wanted to go back home with his 2nd player and QB of the future. I think if JPach had been around more and more, this pick would have done more for the Second Line. I miss you buddy, please come back.

Grade: B
____________________________________________________________________________

28. SAR - Astrophy058 - Kelvin Harris - S (Max TPE: 341)

The Sailfish didn’t strike gold here with the last pick in the 2nd round. In fact, there were still a few players on the board that earned more than them here. But you can’t always hit every pick out of the park. At this rate 27 other players have already gone, so while the grade seems a little harsh, there were still a few prospects that earned way more than that.
