*S38 Prospect Bowl Recap of Sim 1 - FTR - 10-08-2022

The time has come, and somewhat passed, for upcoming DSFL draftees to get their hopes up that their player will do successful in their first ever pro season. Or as some others may call it, the DSFL Prospect Bowl. This season sees the four teams of Tubarao Toucans, Brazil Boas, Wallacea Wildcats & Oaxaca Tree Frogs face off against each other for prospect supremacy. The rosters for each team can be found here, I could write it out to bulk up the word count, but that's probably too scummy.

So anyways you maybe wondering what the heck is the point of this article, even more so if I mess up the title of the article. But anyways it's just a recap of the games played in the prospect bowl, maybe of all three sims, maybe just the first and only sim, depends on how lazy I am. Anyways with that being said, let's look at the games that took place in the first sim of the S38 DSFL Prospect Bowl, that was broadcasted last Wednesday.

Toucans vs Tree Frogs

First up we had a low scoring matchup of the Toucans taking on the Tree Frogs. Jake Williams would open up the scoring for the both the Prospect Bowl and the Tree Frogs, on a goal line run that capped off an 89 yard first drive for the Frogs. And the Frogs would get into the red zone off of their biggest play of the drive, a 41 yard pass to Jay Money that he just failed to convert into a touchdown by an inch. The teams would go back and forth, failing to get a score of any kind until the last 2 minutes. In which Brendan Rojas would catch a goal line pass from the 1 yard to put the Toucans on the board, and less than 90 seconds later they would get their second score of the game, as Charlie Brown would hit a 17 yard Field Goal to put the Toucans up by 3, and their last score of the game. As in the 3rd quarter, the Tree Frogs' Frankie Gogolak would hit a 36 yard field goal to tie, and in their first drive of the 4th quarter, would complete a 75 yard drive with a 5 yard touchdown to hit the eventual game winner. And in the end the Tree Frogs would win 17-10 for the first victory of this year's Prospect Bowl.

As for some standout performances from this game. Frank Dux would rush for a game best 71 yards on 14 carries. Branden Rojas  would lead all receivers with an 86 yards on 8 catches. However Jay Money might have been that leader if he had more catches, as he averaged 19.7 yards on his three catches. And for the defensive side, you would have DeAndre Crover leading all the players in interceptions in two, as well as all users in tackles.

Wildcats vs Boas

Next we have the Wildcats and Boas players getting their first action. And the game would start off with a bang, as the second offensive play of the game, would result in an interception by Anthony Simmons, which would put the Boas at the Wildcats 14 yard line. And after an incomplete pass, the Boas would get a completion that would see the endzone to a bot, so does it really matter for anyone besides the QB? But the Boas wouldn't keep the lead long, as the Wildcats would march down the field, getting 78 yards in 9 plays. Capping off with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Chris Halla. Both teams would be trading posessions without getting any points until Skoomina Hulk a Votto kicks a 35 yard field goal to give the Wildcats a lead that they won't give up. As they would add onto it with a goal line run by Gucci Gurley to put them up by 10, and the final score of the game. As the game would end with the Wildcats winning 17-7.

And now are for some standout performances. Both quarterbacks had a good outing, with Smokin Jay probably getting the better of the two, with his 237 yards on 27 receptions. Joe Idol was a reliable target for Jay, as he got 82 yards in 11 receptions, but Karim Dearis-Wellington showed he could do well for a team in the passing game from the halfback position, getting 44 yards on his 3 receptions. And finally, you had Luigi Lanikai leading all defenders in tackles, at 11.

Boas vs Tree Frogs

This game sees our first shootout in the Prospect Bowl, when the Boas and Tree Frogs combined for a total of 54 points scored. It would take both teams having a possession before a team scores, with the Boas driving 66 yards to score the first touchdown, from an 11 yard pass to a bot. Their next possession, the Boas would reach the endzone again on a goal line rush by John McSwag to end their 40 yard trek of the field. And the Boas scoring wouldn't end there, as just three plays later, they would get the first defensive points of the tournament, when one of the bots would sack the Tree Frogs' NCADV RAINN in the endzone for a safety. The safety wouldn't damper the Tree Frogs offense though, as they'll complete a 62 yard drive, mostly thanks to Elijah Cruz who would pick up 47 of them, with a 1 yard pass to Jay Money. Money would continue with the momentum on their next drive, getting a 50 yard pass. And after an 11 yard rush, Cruz would make up for not getting a touchdown in the previous Tree Frogs drive, getting a 24 yard touchdown pass to put the Tree Frogs within two. But any momentum by the Tree Frogs heading into half-time would be nullified, when the Boas kicker, Cluster Chuck would hit a 36 yard field goal just 26 seconds before the end of the half.

After half-time ends, both teams would be trading possession, with neither able to add anymore points to the scoreboard for almost 10 minutes. But of course that would end, as the Boas would finish their 41 yard drive with a 3 yard touchdown pass to Hot Chocolate for the only score of the third quarter, and give the Boas a 12 point lead. But despite no more scores this quarter, doesn't mean it wouldn't be notable, as the Boas would drive down to the 8 yard line of the Tree Frogs by the end of the quarter. And less than a minute into the final quarter, the Boas would get a 1 yard touchdown rush to put themselves at commending 33 points on the day. The Tree Frogs wouldn't let the score effect their mood, as Jake Williams would pull of a 47 touchdown run to give them 21 points. And if you've been keeping track, that's 54, the same score mentioned at the start of this recap, and the game would end with a 33-21 victory for the Boas.

Now's the standout performance portion of the recap. Despite his team losing, it wouldn't be due to the lack of trying by NCADV RAINN who made 22 passes, gaining 289. As for the other quarterback in the game you had Smokin Jay being the first QB in the bowl to pass the 100 QB rating mark, with a 104.7. The Tree Frogs also got their money worth this game, with Jay Money showing he can be a top pick in the draft, getting 117 yards on 6 receptions. And to not be undone, his wideout teammate for the bowl, Elijah Cruz, would put up 91 yards on his 6 receptions. And for the defense, Maxwell Jacob Friedman would show he might be the best in the word, as he tied the game high of 8 tackles, while getting a sack. And the Boas Anthony Simmons would get the lone interception on the game.

Wildcats vs Toucans

Another shootout would take place in week 2, as it looks like the defenses generally took a week off. The game starts with a drive by the Toucans, one in which they would show they have a strong rushing attack, gaining 93 yards on the ground, with majority of it coming from a 68 run by Eli Heaps. The Toucans next drive would continue their ground attack, getting 17 yard from Ryan Eastbrook and a 48 yard touchdown run by Willier Miller to give them a two score lead. The next drive by the Toucans would show why they might need a rushing attack, because after a 1 yard run, they would throw 2 incomplete passes to give them a three and out. Now the Wildcats will get their first punt of the night and used the extra field location to put up a points. With a 42 yard pass to Dick Grayson that puts them in the redzone, the Wildcats would pull off a 6 yard rush by Karim Dearis-Wellington and a 4 yard touchdown run by Gucci Gurley to cut the score in half. The next possession would end with Luigi Lanikai picking off the Toucans bot QB to give the Wildcats the ball in the Toucans side of the field. And after two passes to Chris Halla, 27 and 13, Gucci Gurley would pull off a 3 yard run to tie the game! After a swap in possessions, the Toucans would march down the field and get a 12 yard touchdown pass caught by Branden Rojas to re-take the lead. Neither team would reach the endzone for the rest of the half, but Skoomina Hulk a Votto would cut the Toucans lead down to 4 with a field goal from 20 yards out. After the half both teams would be trading punts not gaining too much field, until we had a bot to bot connection by the Toucans for 38 yards and 6 points, with the extra point being successful. After failing to convert on 4th and 5, the Wildcats turn the ball over on downs, to give the Toucans the ball before the end of the third quarter. A 10 yard rush by Willier Miller and a 1 yard run by Ryan Eastbrook would finish off the quarter. And to start the fourth quarter, Branden Rojas would catch a pass for 37 yards. And Savio Grayson would finish off the drive for a 16 yard touchdown reception, and the last points scored on the day, as the Toucans would beat the Wildcats 35-17.

As for the standout performances in this game you have the Toucans' Willier Miller who would gain an average of 7.3 yards over his 12 caries. You also had Eli Heaps who wasn't give the ball much, but when he did he made it pay off, gaining 75 yard with 3 caries. And finally you had Branden Rojas getting pass the 100 yards of reception, gaining 106 yards over his 8 receiptions.

Tree Frogs vs Wildcats

It looks like the week 2 games might be an anomaly, as the week 3 games, are a lot closer to the week 1 score than the week 3 scores. And the first game to show this was a matchup of the Tree Frogs and Wildcats. For the first half of the game it was all Tree Frogs, with the Wildcats first play on offense being a fumble that they loss, and their next drive would be a three and out. And the advantage field position would be helpful for the Tree Frogs as they would reach the end zone with an 11 yard touchdown by blocking specialist Seth Leavitt, to finish off their 11 play drive. The Wildcats would be able to get a first, first down but not be able to do much after that, and both teams would be trading possession until half-way through the 2nd quarter, where the Tree Frogs start a drive on the Wildcat's 37. From there the Tree Frogs would gain 28 yard to get them into range for Frankie Gogolak to show the scouts his leg, with a 50 yard field goal to put the Tree Frogs up by 10. The next drive, the Wildcats would be doing a good job moving the ball down the field, until their Blaine Falco would be sacked and fumble, which the Tree Frogs would recover. And from there, they would complete a pass to Jay Money for 10 yards, and then a 35 yard touchdown run Frank Dux run to give the Tree Frogs a 17 point lead at the half. And nothing of note would happen for most of the third quarter, besides the start of a penalty filled drive for the Wildcats. This drive would see 6 penalties given out, with the most important one being a Defensive Pass Interference penalty on the Tree Frogs on a 3rd and 15 play. The resulting penalty would give the Wildcats the ball two yards out from the endzone, which they just needed one pass to Dick Grayson for the score. The next possession would be shutdown by the Wildcats, and they'd get the ball back in hopes to cut the deficit down to one possession. Which they were able to do with a one yard run from Malik Jordan to cap off the 70 yard drive, giving the Wildcats a field goal needing to tie it. After forcing a three and out, the Wildcats would get the ball again and hope to get down into field goal range, at least. But the Tree Frogs defense thought otherwise, as they would pick off Blaine Falco on the first play. The Wildcats defense would be able to stop the Tree Frogs from running out the clock to give their offense one last chance, but they weren't able to get the ball out of their side of the field, and would end up losing the game 17-14.

Now for the standout performances. First off we have Elijah Cruz who got 101 yards on 6 catches. Next we have our first kicked in the list, as Frankie Gogolak would get a 50 yard field goal, as previously mentioned, but all pin the Wildcats within the 20 yards spot 5 times from his punts! For the Wildcats defense, you had Donte Darius leading all "real" players with tackles at 7 and had a forced fumble. You also had Luigi Lanikai who would end up with a game best 3 passes defended. Lastly you would have Maxwell Jacob Friedman who got a forced fumble, sack and 6 tackles on the game for the Tree Frogs.

Toucans vs Boas

The final game of the sim, saw the Toucans take on the Boas. The first quarter of the game was mostly uneventful, with both teams trading possessions, until bot 4 would get force a fumble from a sack and recover said fumble, to give the Boas the ball. After two passing plays, one for 28 yard and the other for 37 yard, would put the Boas on the Toucans 10 yard line. From there the Boas would get a pass and run to put them right at the goal line, which Hot Chocolate would take home for the easy score. The Toucans next drive would end better than their first, as they'll get a 38 yard field goal from Charlie Brown to put themselves on the board. But the score wouldn't last long, as the next drive, Cluster Chuck would hit a 31 yard field goal to give the Boas a one touchdown lead again. And that would be the end of the scoring for the first half. For the first drive in the second half, as the Toucans would go down the field, 89 yards, to score a game tying touchdown from an 18 yard reception by Branden Rojas. But the tie game doesn't last long as the next set of possession ends with a one yard touchdown run by John McSwag, coming off an unnecessary roughness penalty that got the Boas to that spot. The Boas would put a nail in the coffin in their first drive of the 4th quarter, getting a four yard touchdown run by Hot Chocolate to give the final score of the game. With that final score being 24-10 for the Boas.

Now onto our standout performances. The two big ones were Branden Rojas and Savio Grayson, whom despite their best effort of getting 106 & 123 passing yard respectively, just wasn't enough for the Toucans to win. You also have Hot Chocolate on the Boas side, who while didn't make any big running plays, showed up when needed with his 2 touchdowns on the evening. And finally you had Antoine Winfield Jr. who got the only interception in the game.

That's the end of the games that were player in the first sim of the tournament. In the end you have the Tree Frogs and the Boas sitting at 2 wins to 1 lose, with the Wildcats and Toucans obviously being at the 1 win to 2 loses. For the offensive side of things, you have Jake Williams leading all the players in rushing yards at 162, Branden Rojas leading all the players in receiving yards at 298 and Smokin Jay leading all QBs in passer rating. On the defensive side of things you have Anthony Simmons, DeAndre Crover & Antoine Winfield Jr. tied for interceptions, Maxwell Jacob Friedman leading all players in sacks and Luigi Lanikai leading players in tackles.

Looking ahead to the next sim you have the questions of if any of the teams would be able to pull away in the standings, or will it be generally near the same record? Would we see any "real" players break away from the pack in leading their stats, like for instance in sacks which is currently just a bunch of bots with Maxwell Jacob Friedman standing amongst them? Will we see a truly lopsided game? Will we see a pick six finally happen in the tournament? And will we see anymore shootouts? Who knows the answer to these question. But we will find out soon, with the next sim in a few hours as of publishing of this article!
