*Brandon Mason season recap - Bmason0520 - 11-27-2022

Brandon had finished his last season with the yotes in the DSFL and was beginning to make his move to Austin to join the copperheads. He was reminiscing about his time with the yotes. It was place he thoroughly enjoyed being and wished them nothing but the best in the future. #onceayotealwaysayote. He feel like he competed with the best of the dsfl but was nervous about how he would compare to the big dogs in the ISFL. This was kind of like the transition from college to professional. These teams are made up of the best of the best. Even the worst teams are stacked with talent.

The nerves were put aside by excitement though. He was excited to see how teammates from Kansas City, like his old offensive line partner, dusty Wilson, would do with the wraiths. The other thing he was excited about was being able to go up against old friends like joe reed and austin Morley who play in Chicago. He was ready to battle it out in the trenches against these guys. It had been a long road to get there but he was ready. He was going to show why the teams who passed him up, shouldn’t have.

Based on pre season projections, the copperheads weren’t supposed to be very good. That didn’t bother Brandon. He knew that those projections don’t mean anything. Teams outperform or underperform their rankings all the time. The copperheads were on the way up. They had made some great additions over the last couple drafts like beefing up the oline and draft a quality QB to pair with the great young WRs. Soon they would show the ISFL world that they are a team to watch out for.

Week 1: Austin visits Colorado
Brandon was full of nerves on the trip to Colorado. His first game in the big leagues. He’s not sure what to expect, just knows he needs to bring his A game. Close game but the copper heads prevail 31-28. Brandon had only 1 pancakes but didn’t allow a sack. Wasn’t the performance he hoped for but can’t complain with a win.

1-0 week 2: austin takes on New Orleans
Another close game with the second line second line scoring late making it a 3 point game but austin holds in take it 24-21. Brandon finished with 4 sacks but allowed his first sack. Not something he was proud of and knew he needed to keep working.

2-0 week 3: Honolulu travels to Austin
This was a close game in the first half but Brandon and the copperheads pull away in the second half out scoring them 21-10 with a final of 38-27. Brandon had 3 pancakes and improved his game allowing 0 sacks this game. He was happy about that.

3-0 week 4: austin goes to San Jose
Brandon couldn’t believe they were off to a 3-0 start. But he knew this team had what it took. This was going to be a tough road game. Cooper heads jumped out to a 21-7 lead at half but the sabercats clawed their way back in the second half scoring late to make it a 3 point game. Austin was able to hold them off in the end winning 31-28. Another sackless game for Brandon and got 4 pancakes.

4-0 week 5: silverbacks head south to austin
Shock to everyone, the copperheads had moved to 4-0 sitting at the top of the division. However the silverbacks would come in and mess up their perfect season. It was a close battle with New York coming out on top 21-19. Brandon finished with 3 pancakes and no sacks allowed

4-1 week 6: Arizona visits austin
Still happy with the start to the season, austin had its toughest match up yet with the defending champions coming to town. Austin got down 17-3 at half but had one hell of a half time pep talk. They out scored Arizona 21-3 in the second half. The defense was on fire. Brandon wasn’t much of a factor with only 1 pancakes but didn’t allow a sack. Another game where the win is more important than the stats.

5-1 week 7: austin now travels to Orange County
The team was on cloud 9. 5-1 and just beat the defending champions. They felt unstoppable (just wait). They head into Orange County for a close game at half but they pull away in the second winning 42-24. Nothing could stop them (or so they thought). Brandon had a season high 5 pancakes and 0 sacks allowed. He was pleased with his performance through the first half of the season.

6-1 week 8: Berlin long flight to austin
Now 6-1 the copperheads are thinking playoffs are definitely possible (or so they thought). Berlin comes to town and this one goes down to the wire. Back and forth game with austin kicking the tying FG with 1 minute left but the defense couldn’t hold back Berlin who score a game winning FG with only 16 seconds left 23-20. A loss but a respectable one to a team sitting at the top of their division.  Brandon went 5 pancakes and 0 sacks allowed.

6-2 week 9: austin flies to Baltimore
While a loss sucks Brandon and the copperheads knew they had things to learn from that game as they had to Baltimore. Austin is up 1 at half but stall in the second half scoring 0 points. The high scoring austin offense has slowed down the last 2 game. They lose this one 23-14. Another lack luster performance from Brandon with 1 pancake and 0 sacks allowed.

6-3 week 10: sabercats at austin for a rematch
Austin knew that had to stop this losing streak but had a tough matchup with San Jose. They beat them before so they knew they could do it again. Another close on right down to the end up the sabercats got the best of austin 31-27. These losses were starting to pile up. Austin had to get it figured out. Brandon not pleased with his performance of only 1 pancake for the second game in a row.

6-4 week 11: Austin’s trip to Honolulu
As Austin was prepping for the trip to play winless Honolulu, they couldn’t let this seem like a for sure win. They had to earn it. In a high scoring affair, Austin pulls out the win 34-25. Hopefully this was the win that they needed to get back on track. The playoffs hopes were slowly falling apart. Brandon recorded 3 pancakes and 0 sacks allowed in this game. He was just happy to finally get a win.

7-4 week 12: Orange County comes to Austin
Another divisional rematch for Austin.  Coming off the win last week they needed to use that momentum towards this week. Austin does and jumps up to a 10-0 lead but then something happened and it all fell apart. Orange County scores 26 unanswered to beat Austin 26-16. Another loss is killing the playoff hopes for Austin. Brandon clearly frustrated walks off the field with 3 pancakes and 1 sack allowed.

7-5 week 13: Austin goes to the big Apple
Brandon and the copperheads are frustrated with the second half to the season. After starting 6-1 they are now 7-5 and watching the playoffs slip away.  They had a tough match up with the silverbacks. Though it was close at half, Austin only being down one score. The second half was ugly being out scored 24-14.  Brandon had 2 pancakes but no sacks allowed.

7-6 week 14: New Orleans comes to Austin
Trying to put frustration aside, Austin prepares for New Orleans trying to keep playoff hopes alive. Brandon took this to heart. While giving up a sack, he recorded a season high 9 pancakes on the day. Second line actually lead at half  but Austin bite back winning the second half 13-3 winning the game 19-16. With the win, Austin’s playoff hopes aren’t completely gone (yet).

8-6 week 15: Chicago makes a visit to Austin
This was a game Brandon had circled on his calendar since the preseason. It was a matchup with good friends Austin Morley and joe Reed. However that’s about it on this game. Austin goes down 40-0 before scoring its first points of the game with 1:35 left in the game. Losing 40-7 and this loss ended any playoff hopes for Austin. Brandon and the copperheads don’t know how to respond to this game.

8-7 week 16: Austin to Arizona
With the playoffs out of reach it was hard to get excited for this game but Austin still had to show up. And that’s about all they did. At the end of the first half Austin was already down 34-7, and lose 41-7. The second half of the season has left the copperheads extremely disappointed.

After finishing 8-8, Brandon had to do some real self reflection. While it wasn’t what they expected based on the first half of the season, they weren’t expected to even finish 8-8, outperforming the projections for the season. He also finished the season with 58 sacks and only allowed 3 sacks as a rookie. All in all it wasn’t a terrible season and the copperheads are only trending up.  Brandon is excited for year 2.
