*The Fall of Donte Darius - Void_DCXI - 12-11-2022

The S39 ISFL Draft has passed us by, and it was an exciting one, with all sorts of surprises to keep the audience entertained, even though this class was smaller than usual. One of the bigger stories though was Donte Darius slipping out of the top 10. Most thought that Darius was a top 5 or top 6 draft pick, and he has had no character issues pre-draft, so what exactly happened?

With the 1st overall pick, the Honolulu Hahalua select Seth Leavitt, TE, KCC. Not a surprise here. Leavitt was the consensus #1 pick in this draft, and was without a doubt a great locker room presence. Darius was still chilling at this point. He didn’t even expect to go first overall, so he was still doing just fine expecting to go somewhere else in the top 5.

With the 2nd overall pick, the Colorado Yeti select, Waylon Greene, DE, Dallas. Everybody knew the Yeti were going defense with this one, but a lot of people expected it to be a linebacker, either Maxwell Jacob Friedman or Donte Darius. In the end, Colorado went DE with this one, choosing one of Donte’s Birddog teammates. Nonetheless, Darius was still happy for his teammate going 2nd overall, and he remained optimistic about going in the top 5.

With the 3rd overall pick, the Orange County Otters select, Sam Sunigh, LB, KCC. The first linebacker off the board, Sunigh hopes to re-bolster a defense that took a sharp decline in Season 38. Darius wanted to be the first LB off the board, but he knew that both Sunigh and MJF are great players and he wasn’t mad if they went ahead of him.

With the 4th overall pick, the Chicago Butchers select Frank Dux, RB, Minnesota. Somewhat of a surprise at #4, the Butchers go running back here and select the Ducks’ Mr Dux. Darius had been mocked to Chicago before, but they felt RB was a bigger need for them and took the also max earning Dux. Darius was starting to get a little worried he could slip out of the top 5, but he had also been mocked to Sarasota, so he held his breath.

With the 5th overall pick, the Sarasota Sailfish select Willier Miller, RB, London. Another surprise for Darius, the Sailfish take Willier Miller to be their franchise guy for the future. So Darius had dropped out of the top 5. Not a big deal, Darius thought. He had been mocked as low as 7th, so he knew there was a possibility he wouldn’t go top 5, so he awaited what Austin would do 7th overall.

With the 6th overall pick, the Baltimore Hawks select Jake Williams, RB, Tijuana. Everyone and their mother knew that Jake was going here, which is why Darius was waiting to see what Austin would do rather than what he already knew Baltimore would do. 3 straight RBs is pretty cool though eh?

With the 7th overall pick, the Austin Copperheads select Mario Moloka’i, DT, Norfolk. As they say down south, Norfolk best folk, but Darius was at this point getting worried about dropping out of the first entirely now. Everyone he had been mocked to had taken someone else. Maybe someone would trade up? Moloka’i will undoubtedly be a stall-worth defensive player for years to come for Austin, but Darius was still in the green room, pretty shaken.

With the 8th overall pick, the Orange County Otters select Johnson Lovehammer, DT, Minnesota. Another DT off the board, and it’s the hammer of love, Johnson to be exact! Johnson is a wonderful player who checks all the boxes for OCO. Darius was now stress eating ice cream in the green room to cope.

With the 9th overall pick, the Baltimore Hawks select MC Hammer, LB, Minnesota. So Baltimore gets all the Hammer bros back together with this pick, as Darius has gone from eagerly awaiting his name to be called to desperately hoping his name is heard at all. Could he slip out of the top 10? Surely not…

With the 10th overall pick, the Honolulu Hahalua select Maxwell Jacob Friedman, LB, Portland. Darius understood this pick. Even if it was a LB that wasn’t him, Darius thought that he and MJF were the top 2 LBs in the draft and could go interchangeably to a Linebacker hungry team. Nonetheless, Darius was still in freefall, with no sign of stopping any time soon. Darius was wondering if he should fall back on that track and field gig he had in high school.

Suddenly, Darius gets a phone call from a New York area code. He knows what this means. He picks up the phone.

With the 11th overall pick, the New York Silverbacks select Donte Darius, LB, Dallas. At long last, Darius finally gets drafted, and way later than anyone thought he’d be. Although he was upset about not going higher, he now has a team that he knows has his back, and is eager to prove the other teams in the ISFL wrong. Donte Darius is officially a New York Silverback.
