S40 DSFL Contraction - Update - nunccoepi - 02-03-2023
Hello!
The DSFL Head Office recently made an announcement describing an ongoing trend of decreased retention and recruitment. This problem isn't unique to us; it's occurring across the entire sim league community. But it has left DSFL teams with fewer and fewer active users recently, averaging about 9 per team for the last two seasons. As explained in the announcement, our solution was to contract two of the DSFL teams in an attempt to foster more active and engaged locker rooms. But that decision had a caveat: we would reevaluate if more than 80 players created as part of the S41 class. Currently, the S41 class sits at 93 players with a few still correcting their builds and several expected to create after the Ultimus tonight. In all, we think a 100-player class is realistic.
Thus, WE HAVE DECIDED TO DELAY CONTRACTION.
Users across the league heavily pushed recruitment in light of the recent news, and it worked. It has been wonderful to see the league come together to support the affected teams and the league's health as a whole. So, thank you! And a big welcome and thank you to those of you who just joined us from r/NFL. Our recruitment post this week was much more successful than in recent seasons which has been a pleasant surprise to say the least.

Successful recruitment also meant more work for various members of our community, including the Rookie Mentor team, the Recruitment team, and General Managers who have made themselves available to help all the new users get acclimated. It is always such a joyous time to see how well we welcome users into the league and get them up and running, so thank you to everyone involved.
So what does "delay" mean? S40 will have all 8 teams. And with average to good retention, recruitment, and call-up numbers, we think its likely that S41 will have all 8 teams as well. But HO will continue to actively monitor these metrics throughout this season and will officially decide whether to contract in S41 at a later time. Importantly, if we decide to contract, ALL DSFL teams will be re-assessed with updated data and the same metrics we outlined in our previous post. In other words, we will not choose the same two teams simply because they were chosen this time.
Some have asked why we decided to announce the contraction plans right before the recruitment and while the draft class size was still known. In light of this announcement, its an even better question. First, it's important to time such an announcement well, taking into account the most up-to-date data while also giving teams enough time to plan for the next season. Contraction also means a contraction draft, which would impact the off-season schedule. At bottom, we couldn't wait any longer to begin preparations. We knew that it would be risky to invite potential new users to join a league that just gave such disappointing news. But we thought it would be more harmful to make the announcement after the new users made the decision to join and then became attached to the teams facing contraction. Of course, if recruitment numbers weren't high enough to delay contraction we didn't want any new users feeling like it was their fault. Doing it this way forced our league to come together for a strong recruitment push and invites new users to feel like they can be part of the solution, not like they were part of the problem.
