*DSFL Mid-Season Awards - WrittinDirectino - 03-10-2023

While I usually prefer to go through actual game footage and do my analysis based on that, that would’ve been too difficult for 7 weeks worth of games and I had to take a more stats-based approach on this one. Here are my Mid Season Award winners.

MVP: Smokin Jay (QB, Bondi Beach Buccaneers)  BBB @"Gbeck765"
1820 Yards, 21 Touchdowns, 109.6 QBR
This one is a bit of a no brainer. Bondi Beach is sitting on top of the league table after a 5 game winning streak. During the streak, the Bucs offense has scored over 40 twice and over 50 once. Racking up touchdowns after touchdowns, The BBB offense looks nigh unstoppable at times. Smokin Jay is the superstar behind it. You can forget about last year’s Smokin Jay. Last season’s Smokin Jay was a true gunslinger with a cannon. Always looking for a big play and a bit reckless at times. This year, Smokin Jay has taken the next step, turning into a true field general who knows when to take what the defense gives you but isn’t afraid to chuck it deep. Smokin Jay’s best trait is perhaps his ball placement. His completion percentage is actually below the league average, but as evidenced by his only interception, he is fantastic at placing the ball where only his receivers can get it.

Defensive Player of the Year: Ryan Lawrence (EDGE, Kansas City Coyotes)
KCC@ThreeToeSloth
7 Sacks, 4 Forced Fumbles, 19 Tackles
Although Kansas City is struggling, their defense deserves recognition. They are the league leading defense in terms of yards allowed. Their greatest strength is their ability to shut down the passing game. Teaming up with rookie phenom Lukas Van Ness in the trenches, Ryan Lawrence has been terrorizing quarterbacks all year. While he is lauded for his strength, he is unbelievably quick, perhaps thanks to his rugby background. Ryan Lawrence is a true game changer.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Bruce White (EDGE, Portland Pythons) POR@toofpete
11 Sacks, 17 Tackles, 1 Safety.
#4 Overall pick Bruce White Bruce White has translated his college success into a fantastic start to his rookie campaign. The Leader of the famed “Wrecking Crew” at Texas A&M is even better than we thought he would be. The highlight of his season was a 3 sack, 2 FF game against Norfolk, when he used his exceptional speed to outmaneuver offensive linemen en route to the quarterback. And when he gets to the quarterback, boy does he hit hard.

Offensive Player of the Year: Kairo Knight (WR, Bondi Beach Buccaneers)  BBB@Akoustique
600 Yards, 10 Touchdowns
It takes two to tango, and Kairo Knight is Smokin Jay’s dance partner. They are lighting the dance floor on fire. It wasn’t easy choosing between Plant Based and Kairo Knight. But 10 touchdowns is pretty hard to ignore, so I had to give the nod to Kairo. While having the mid-season MVP does help, you can’t deny that Kairo’s been great individually. Kairo is a great red zone threat with his soft hands and catch radius. Slot receivers are a staple in the modern offense, but the Bucs WR has gone above and beyond traditional slot receiver duties. Knight’s rise has opened up the field for the rest of Bondi Beach’s receiving corps (Plant Based, Oliver Tolliver) to do whatever they want.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Legs McMillion (WR, Norfolk Seawolves) NOR@jollyjiggs
608 Yards, 4 Touchdowns
A pair of giant, chiseled legs running on the open field is a sight to behold. Legs runs like he has a personal vendetta against the turf, and the stats show that. He averages an insane 25.3 yards per catch. He is one of the fastest players in the league and is a huge home run threat. In a league where short passing is prioritized, YAC is a very valuable skill. While advertised coming out Leg Day University as a return specialist, McMillion has already found a bigger role, and it looks like Norfolk have found an absolute gem in the third round.

Walter Payton Person of the Year: Mary Marie (FS, Bondi Beach Buccaneers)  BBB@aeonsjenni
This award is about meaningful contributions to the community, and I think Mary Marie(aeonsjenni) deserves a lot of credit. Her media posts based on mathematical analysis are truly a thing of beauty. The fact that you can calculate advanced stats such as EPA for a sim-engine based league is awesome. I can't say I understand everything, but the graphics look cool too.

RE: DSFL Mid-Season Awards - Twenty6 - 03-10-2023

Fantastic write-up! Legs McMillion is probably one of my favorite ISFL characters.

Also, Brian Vincent-Vega best safety. Bang bang!
