*Jamie Orion Scouting Report - Piercewise1 - 07-22-2023

Prospect Summary
Jamie Orion
SAF, Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue safety Jamie Orion has the physicality, brains, and heart to play at the professional level. He played multiple positions at Purdue including free safety, strong safety, and slot cornerback, but seems most comfortable playing off the line of scrimmage. No matter where he lined up he possessed a knack for getting to the football, covering large swathes of the field despite his somewhat average size.

Orion has good play recognition which, when combined with his first-step quickness, allows him to break on plays immediately and get to the right place on the field. He has excellent instincts but can be over-aggressive in his pursuit angles, betting on an advantage in speed which will be less frequent in the pros. He is equally proficient in shallow or deep zones and flashed some ability in man-to-man coverages as well – was known for his willingness to play any position in any situation. Always goes for the ball, whether tackling a runner or competing for a pass, and lives for turnovers.

Orion displays excellent tackling technique, making up for his lack of pure strength. He rarely lined up in the box at Purdue and had difficulty breaking blocks from the more athletic offensive linemen, but excelled as a gunner on special teams early in his career. His exceptional speed allows him to chase down wide running plays and keep long runs from becoming touchdowns. He continues to push himself in private workouts and believes he possesses even more untapped potential.

Orion certainly isn’t lacking for confidence, though he backs up his words with excellent play and perpetual effort; he’s definitely a “high motor” guy. He’s equally comfortable in the film room as the gym, and knows his way around both. Incredibly determined – he walked on at Purdue when none of his scholarship offers met his expectations. Earns high marks for his versatility and willingness to experiment, but needs to prove he can excel at one specific job to boost his stock as a prospect.

Top Reasons to Buy In:
• High vertical and lateral speed
• Good eyes in the passing game
• Nose for turnovers
• Consistently high-effort

Top Reasons for Concern:
• Overpowered in run defense (particularly interior)
• Jack of all trades, master of none?
