*Davos vs Mexico City Week 1 Recap (First Gen 2x Media Post) - OrangeJulius - 07-27-2023

What a fantastic start to the season! The first games of the year have been played, bets have been won and lost, and trash talk was abundant. Here's a recap of the first game of the season!

Week 1 Game 1: Davos Mountaineers vs Mexico City Aztecs

We kick the Prospect Bowl series off with a great game between two teams whose distance between their hometowns is over 6000 miles away! Thankfully both teams were able to take private jets to ease any jet lag. Davos kicked off to Mexico City who returned it to the 16-yard line giving the Aztecs not good field position to start the game. Davos committed a neutral zone infraction on the first play from scrimmage due to Dunkin Lazlo jumping the snap. The Aztecs' first drive was starting well with a first down pass to Diego De La Castillo for 9 yards. RB Crane and TE Tyler Passerelli made great plays leading to another few first downs. Eventually, the Mountaineer's defense was able to make a stand near the red zone and force Logan Johnson to kick his first-ever field goal which he made! 3-0 Aztecs.

Davos started off their first drive of the season with an immediate defensive pass interference call on the Aztecs. Seems both teams of rookies were jumpy today! Unfortunately, no one on the team could move the chains with multiple incomplete passes despite the call. After deciding not to go for on 4th and inches they punted back to Mexico City. The Aztecs suffered a similar fate Davos first drive and punted it again on 4th and 9. Davos started to roll down the field after Mustard and Orange Julius caught a few balls including an 8-yard gain alongside a roughing the passer penalty to set them up near the redzone. RB Maple Dogwood was getting his wheels under him and made a few plays to move the chains as well. Unfortunately, QB Malcolm Baynes took a chance throwing in traffic and got his first interception in the league courtesy of CB Dylan Friedland. With momentum on their side and a clutch catch from WR John Parano, it looked as though the Aztecs would build their lead. However, Davos stepped up and forced a punt to get the ball back. Maple Dogwood made a great run to the outside to get a first down, but after a sack and a few incompletions, Davos punted again.

End of Q1: Aztecs 3 : Mountaineers 0

Start of Q2

The Aztecs had the ball to begin the quarter and came out blazing with quick passes from Tua TurnDaBallOva to John Parano, Diego Castilla, and TE Theo Blake who had a pancake block on the same play. After having too many men on the field for Davos, the Aztecs were in prime position in the red zone to score. QB Adam Gausman threw a dart to TE Adam Waffle, and on the ensuing first down, he threw another laser to John Parano on the outside who absolutely mossed his corner for the first touchdown of the season both for him and the league!

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 0

Things were starting to look not so hot for the Mountaineers. After going down 10-0 and having most of their drives stall out, the momentum was clearly in the Aztec's favor. Now was the time to show up and they sure did. On their first drive after the touchdown, Davos was driving. Dogwood made chunk plays running through the tackles, and after a few catches from Marshall, Julius, and Cauthon, the Mountaineers were starting to heat up. Mexico City then got called for unnecessary roughness and put the Mountaineers just outside the red zone. However a few incompletions later Davos was forced to kick and they made the field goal for their first points of the game!

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 3
5:50 Q2

The Aztecs were looking to start putting up some points this drive but were held to a quick 3 and out giving Davos the ball back with plenty of time on the clock and a chance to tie the game before halftime. After a quick catch by Marshall, Dogwood was aggressively stepped on after being tackled by CB Birtha, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which again put Davos in a good position to score for a second drive in a row! Cauthon made a great catch and run for a first down and after 2 quick gains by Dogwood, WR Born stepped up and made a great catch and run for 15 yards to put Davos at the 4-yard line! All it took was one throw from Baynes to TE Mustard for the first TD of their season!

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 10
2:34 Q2

Facing a near two-minute drill it was time for Mexico City to puts some more points on the board before the half. However, on the first play of the drive, Parano caught the ball and was running light like lightning near the sideline only for CB Moreno to strip him and give the ball back to the Mountaineers in fantastic field position at the Aztec's 36-yard line. Talk about a momentum change! After a quick incompletion, WR Torn took the ball up the middle for a nice first down, and it looked as Davos was going to score! Unfortunately, after a few more incompletions they elected to kick a field goal giving them the lead.

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 13
1:21 Q2

The Aztecs wanted to try and tie the game before half, even though time was running out. After a few quick strikes to Castilla and Parano, it looked as though they were about to get into field goal range. However out of nowhere LB Chris Bourassa jumps the route and takes it 50 yards to the house, doing the Deion Sanders dance on the way down. This is the first defensive touchdown of the season!

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 20
0:18 Q2

The Aztecs got the ball back and just ran some quick throws to practice before the half was over. With the half coming to a close, we all know who's side the momentum was on!

End of 1st Half

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 20

Start of 2nd Half
Q3 15:00

The Mountaineers received the ball and were looking to start putting the game out of reach for the Aztecs after an amazing second quarter. After two quick incompletions, it was 3rd and 10, and Baynes threw an absolute dot to Mustard who almost outran everyone for a 29-yard gain! After a nice catch and run by Cauthon and a few chunk plays by Dogwood, Davos was stopped on 3rd down and elected to kick a 51-yard field goal. K Jones had it lined up but the wind pushed just past the left upright. The Aztecs got the turnover on downs and started with great field position at the 41-yard line. Immediately Gausman steps up and throws a bomb to Parano on the outside for a 20-yard gain. Even with Moreno tackling him again, he made sure to hold on to the ball! Diego Castillo and TE Waffle both made excellent plays and after a Defensive Pass Interference call, they were knocking on the Mountaineer's door! But just like the last time Tua TurnDaBallOva was about to throw a tuddy, he threw yet another interception, this time to Felix Waterman who promptly took it down back the other way for a 42-yard gain. The Aztec crowd was calling for the other QB in their system to take over from Tua, but they gave their rookie a break as he was new to everything and was expected to make some errors in his first game. Davos was looking to capitalize on this mistake, but the Aztec defense held strong forcing a quick 3 and out. Tua definitely took a sigh of relief after they punted the ball back. However, they couldn't get anything going and punted the ball back after their own 3 and out. Davos tried making a few plays on the ensuing possession but LB Joey Battle had plans of his own and sacked Baynes for an 8-yard loss. Davos could convert and decided instead of going for a field goal to try and pin the Aztecs as close to their endzone as possible. A perfect punt by P Weaver went out of bounds at the 1-yard line and forced the Aztecs to move the ball quickly or a safety was surely coming. A questionable dropback by Tua made it appear as though he ran out of his own endzone for a safety, but no ref seemed to catch it. It didn't matter however as the Aztecs couldn't move the chains after a 9-yard catch and had to punt near their own endzone, praying they didn't experience the dreaded Butt Punt phenomenon. Davos took the ball and Orange Julius made his first catch and run of the game for a nice 13-yard gain after he bodied CB Monfils for the catch. Marshall made another great play right after with a 24 catch and run which almost made one player slide out of his shoes with how broken his ankles were. A quick pass to Born on 1st down ended the 3rd quarter.

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 20
Q4 15:00

Davos started out where they left off, hoping to put this game out of reach for the Aztecs and secure the first win of the entire season. Dogwood made a quick run to the outside and then just like Julius and Marshall, it was Mustard's turn to show off as he made a quick catch and ran around everyone for a 14 yard gain that looked like it was a touchdown, but upon further review, he was ruled down at the 1-yard line. It didn't matter though as Dogwood had that DOG in him when he jumped over both the offensive and defensive lines for a touchdown!

Aztecs 10 : Mountaineers 27
Q4 13:40

The Aztecs were on the ropes and were hoping that they could somehow get back in this game. The way to do that was by showing they weren't down and out on this drive. RB Crane and TE Waffle let everyone know they meant business by combining for 37 yards on two plays, a 14-yard run, and a 23-yard catch! Then to complete an absolute flurry of plays, Adam Gausman stepped back in the pocket, took his time, and threw and absolute missile to Waffle for 38 yards and a touchdown! The connection between these two is going to have be game planned by opposing coaches at this rate.

Aztecs 17 : Mountaineers 27
Q4 11:42

The Aztecs had an amazing drive, and it was up to Davos to put the nail in the coffin with a score to keep this game out reach due to the time remaining. Orange Julius made a quick catch and was just shy of the first down. It didn't matter however, as Dogwood moved the chains. Mustard had a similar play to Julius but closer to the seams and was just shy again of a first down. Born managed to haul in a catch from a low throw to keep the drive alive. Then Orange Julius saw his coverage and told Baynes it's my turn to show them what I got. Julius faked out Monfils with his amazing route running and took the ball 40 yards, with it having taken 2 grown men to bring him down. Cauthon made a play after to put Davos at 1 yard line and Dogwood punched it in for his 3rd TD of the game. There's a short yardage king to look out for!

Aztecs 17 : Mountaineer's 34
Q4 5:40

With little time remaining and a 17 point deficit, the Aztecs were doing everything they could to somehow bring the game back. However, Tua was sacked on the first play for a 10-yard loss. Even though it was garbage time basically, Crane took the ball and ran a quick 24 yards, showing his violent running style in the process. After a few chunk plays and a few incompletions, it was 4th and 10 with any chance of padding the score on the line. TE Passarreli stepped up and made a beautiful catch over his defender, securing the first 4th down conversion of the season! The next set of downs was interesting as both teams committed penalties moving the ball back and forth ending up with Mexico City facing a 2nd and 20 after Gausman fumbled making a pass but somehow got ahold of it and kept the ball in the Aztec's possession. Passarelli made a nice catch to make it 3rd and 9, but after an incompletion, it was 4th down. Gausman tried to thread the needle with a pass to Castillo but he dropped it, turning the ball over and almost putting this game to bed. Davos took the ball and tried to run out the clock, but ended up punting with just a few seconds remaining. Nothing came of the ensuing plays, and the game was over.

Final Score

(0-0-1) Mexico City Aztecs: 17

(1-0-0) Davos Mountaineers: 34

Was going to place the stat lines here but to save time just pause the Youtube video at 11:04 if you want to find out how your player did!

If I butchered your name I also apologize.
