*What’s going on in Kansas City? - ForSucksFake - 08-19-2023

The Kansas City Coyotes have had a worse season so far than I think even the most cynical pundits could have anticipated. Sure, most were slotting the Yotes at the bottom of their conference with a sub .500 record but their sluggish start has been worse than expected. The Coyotes have a league-worst 53 points scored while having 104 dropped on them. This isn’t the worst in the DSFL defensively, but it’s hard to overcome limited offensive output.

After picking up their first win of the season against Norfolk, where they added almost half of their current season-long point total; there is some hope for the middle stretch of the schedule to throw some luck Kansas City’s way.

What’s been plaguing the Coyotes? Well, while their defense has been solid enough; it’s the offense that until Week 4, has been sputtering. The run game has been average. Fortunately for KCC, the run game for the rest of the DSFL has been average too.

One bright spot has also been a sore spot for the team. Rookie quarterback Leonard McRobinson has proven to be a great runner but accuracy issues have resulted in drives that yield no points. The duality of the dual threat DSFL quarterback rings true. More experience and a season of max earning will help with the passing part of McRobinson’s game. His running ability has been crucial for KCC to hang around during the first half. He’s shown that he can break off long runs and has punched the ball in for a team-leading three rushing scores. Fortunately, even if the passing numbers aren’t there yet, the turnovers have been limited for the rookie QB.

Ultimately, what has been most alarming and concerning for Kansas City’s has been the special teams. Anakin Skywalker is top five in kick return yards and top two in punt return yards, but with no return touchdowns and the offense failing to capitalize on good field position, raw numbers don’t seem to matter. It’s been rookie kicker Golden Foote who has been having a rough go at it. TPE-wise, Foote is doing well and is maximizing his kicking attributes. For whatever reason, this hasn’t been able to translate into meaningful simpact. Foote is kicking field goals at a 67% clip but has inexplicably missed from under 20 yards out and has only gone 1/3 from 21-29. Overall these misses haven’t had much impact on the team’s losses. In fact, his best game where he nailed his season-best 49-yarder on top of a 32-yarder while going 1/1 on the extra point kick, Kansas City still lost by 11 points. The hope for Foote, while his personal TPE development has been great, is that the offense will put him in better positions where he can tack on some points. You can’t put much blame on him. The silver lining is that while he is struggling early in his career, it’s not really hurting the team at the end of the day.

Where do the Coyotes go from here? While you can never really write a team off this early, it’s unlikely the Yotes will make it to the playoffs in S43. Moving forward, there is hope with another draft and perhaps some waiver pickups the team can continue to grow and move in the right direction. KCC’s front office has shown that they are more than capable of building and growing a great program. Anything is possible with great management like Kansas City’s. With another year of Anakin Skywalker in S44 likely and the continued development of Leonard McRobinson, there’s always next year.
