*Analyzing the League's Newspaper - AW13 - 08-31-2023

Hello!

I was recently perusing the index when I came across the newspaper and actually read some of the stuff in there and I found it pretty interesting and mostly, found it an interesting topic that could be thrown into a media article.

There are different generated quotes from players, some players of the week, and some score predictions on a game of the week as well which makes it all pretty interesting because well, we can actually go back and look at things and see some humor in the quotes, analyze the players of the week and see who might get the most, and see how those score predictions did.

So, let's go back to the beginning of the season after the draft and such takes place in game since that is not really friendly with our league. It has team needs and such which is not too too bad but also rosters may not have been final or it would require looking at team's top moves. Let's look at the quotes, games of the week, and players of the week for now! We will be looking at the league's first 5 weeks as there is a lot going on with the newspaper!

Problems in the Big Apple?

A little bit of infighting in the New York locker room in the receivers room perhaps? At a galla event of all places, reporters caught Matthew Mara and he tried to make clear he was the best receiver on the team. A big quote especially after an incredible season last year from McHollywood that saw him nominated for offensive player of the year and be an all-pro wide receiver in the ISFL. Did the quote have any merit?

On the season so far, Mara has indeed more catches, yards, and touchdowns when compared to McHollywood. McHollywood holds the advantages in yards per reception by about a yard per but so far it seems like Mara is determined to make his quote true. The two seem to be working together just fine and push each other in a good way since they combine for 116 catches, 1762 yards, and 14 touchdowns so far this season through 12 games. The two are close enough where McHollywood could jump Mara in some or all stats so it is a race to watch but both of them are proving to be elite receivers on a great passing offense. They just need to stay chill with reporters though.

Week One Game of the Week!

Time for Mara to put those words into action as New York would be featured in week one's game of the week against the reigning champs in Arizona. Arizona comes to the Empire state in a matchup of reigning champ and potential contender to follow them in what should be a great game.

Our writers Jeremy Piper, Mary Moore, and Jim Nox all went the way of Arizona while Darren Francis was the lone believer in New York. Piper said it would be easy for Arizona to win. Moore said the Spottie O'Dopalicious will be dominant and destroy the offense and Jim Nox echoed the defense as well saying New York would not get far against them. Darren Francis was the lone writer to choose New York in a close win.

Result: New York 37 - Arizona 21

A blow out win for New York to open the season against the champs! Big statement from the Silverbacks. Piper, Moore, and Nox drop to 0-1 on predictions for the season while Francis jumps to 1-0 with the what was bold prediction. Obviously Piper and Nox were wrong stating an easy win for Arizona and a dominant defense by the Outlaws respectively. To Mary Moore's credit, O'Dopalicious did come through with 3 pass defenses and an interception but it was not enough as New York found success most other places on the field. Right about the player, wrong about the result.

Season Predictions

Twenty of the top sports journalists came together to make predictions on the winners of each conference. 12 votes went to both winners with Honolulu in the ASFC and Cape Town in the NSFC. New York and Berlin took the 2nd spots in each conference with the 6 votes.

So far on the season, in the ASFC, Honolulu through 12 games sits at 5-7 and has been eliminated from winning the conference. 2nd place prediction New York currently stands atop the ASFC with a 3 game advantage over the Outlaws and hold the head to head tiebreaker against them. With 4 left to play, it is entirely possible the Silverbacks have already wrapped up the conference by week 12. Looks like the 2nd place votes should have been first!

In the NSFC, Cape Town is currently in 2nd place in the conference with a 9-3 record trailing the Baltimore Hawks who are 10-1-1. With the head to head tiebreaker in Baltimore's favor, it is looking like the Hawks will represent the NSFC as their top team but it is not as wrapped up quite yet. Berlin, the second place voted team, like Honolulu, is 5-7 and sitting second to last in the NSFC. A recent 4 game losing streak has really derailed their season and while they are still within playoff range, they will need to turn things around.

Week One Players of the Week!

Players of the week go to Falco and Badman for New York and Cape Town respectively. Falco, the Silverbacks QB had a great performance and that was in the game of the week listed by the game's newspaper so performing in the GOTW certainly gives him top honors. The two interceptions are not great but 452 yards and 3 TDs against what was thought to be a top defense is pretty impressive.
For Badman, we can't say too much negative here with 4 sacks and an interception. 4 sack games don't come around too often especially a 4 sack game with an interception. Against Baltimore too this could be a candidate for performance of the year.

Criticizing the Rookie!

Already problems in the Big Easy as WR PeePee Poop-Eater Sr. really let some teammates have it, especially rookie linebacker Bubba Hog. Frustrations seem to be boiling over in New Orleans who have been doing a lot of losing recently and the locker room may not be in the greatest place. For what it is worth, the rookie Hog led the Second Line in tackles with 10 and had a tackle for loss in the game. Looking solely at the boxscore, it is hard to fault Bubba Hog in this one. Perhaps there were moments where he could have done more, but I think Hog would actually look at his individual performance and be pretty happy.

Week Two Game of the Week!

An interesting choice for game of the week especially since the Butchers are not a super great team right now and Berlin was picked as 2nd favorite to win the NSFC but the Fire Salamanders would roll into Chicago for this week two matchup looking to prove they can beat the opponents they should beat.

Our writers back again from last week where we saw 3 of our writers get it wrong and this time again it is a 3 to 1 bet in favor of the eventual loser. Jeremy Piper praised Berlin's head coach and predicted a very entertaining game. Mary Moore predicted Frank Dux would not be contained and that the Butchers can't lose. Jim Nox and Darren Francis had differing opinions as Nox predicted a potential blowout praising the Chicago offense while Francis said it could come down to the wire.

Result: Berlin 29 - Chicago 7

A blowout indeed, in favor of Berlin! Another 1-3 week for our writers.

In a way, all of the writers were wrong at least on some part as the one writer who got it right, Piper, predicted a very entertaining game, which it was not. He at least got the results right bringing him to 1-1 on the season. Mary Moore was way off with her Dux prediction as Dux had 11 carries for 8 yards and 2 catches for 32 yards. A combined 40 yards on 13 touches is certainly contained and Chicago did lose, by a lot. Moore is now 0-2 in her predictions. Nox and Francis were obviously both wrong, Nox being more wrong predicting a blowout the other way but both were incorrect. Nox falls to 0-2 on the season while Francis can't remain perfect falling to 1-1.

Week Two Players of the Week!

Week two saw a running back take home offensive player of the week with Baltimore's Pyxis who, despite a bit lower volume was very electric and efficient with their touches. Pyxis also had 2 catches for 19 yards bringing total yardage to 166 on 14 touches against Yellowknife in a great performance. New York's defensive lineman Dub Redd proved to be a force in week 2 with a sack that ended in a safety and a forced fumble which through further research happened at OCO's own 3-yard line and was recovered by line mate Fat Jack and returned to the 2. NYS RB McTurtle ran it in for a touchdown a couple plays later with Redd's two big plays leading to 8 points for NYS and propelling the Silverbacks forward for the win.

Angry LB Speaks Out!

Mario Moloka'i is a linebacker for the Austin Copperheads who was angry about his team's 38-44 loss against the Outlaws in week 2. Generally, I think if you are on the defense and you give up 44 points, you probably should not be saying you were the better team. If your offense scores 38 points, you should win the game every time but it was not in the cards for the Copperheads. Mario also misspoke saying the Copperheads did not deserve to win this. He may have misspoke but it appears his mistake was probably more correct than he would want it to be as Austin was down 37-22 headed into the 4th quarter, they probably did not deserve to win the game.

The Optimistic Fullback

Speaking regarding the Hahalua's week one loss to Austin, Sailor Moon was still hopeful and optimistic for the season to come. Moon did not have a ton of stats in the Week 1 loss to Austin totaling 3 pancakes on the day without giving up a sack but also was flagged twice with penalty yardage totaling 15 yards. Being one of the only fullbacks in the league, it is good to see Moon speak out and show promise for her team. On the season, she has 13 total yards and a TD with 27 pancakes giving up 3 sacks. The young FB looks to be more involved but she definitely believes in her team and looks to be a valuable piece for the future.

Week Three Game of the Week!

After Berlin was mentioned as a potential NSFC winner, Baltimore took major offense to this and circled it on their calendar to prove the world that they were the true leaders of the conference and headed over to Germany for the bout with Berlin.

Our writers are back and this time split on the predictions with 2 going for the road Hawks and 2 staying with the home Fire Salamanders. Jeremy Piper again predicted an easy win for the home team saying the defense would step up. Moore went with the Hawks and pointed out Shane Turnbull on offense and said the game would just be another day at the office for the visitors, essentially predicting an easy win. Jim Nox pointed out DT Casino Robin being a difference maker on defense and saying the Hawks would put up a lot of points. Darren Franciz echoed the words of Jeremy Piper and predicted an easy Berlin win. All the writers predicted easy wins from their chosen sides.

Result: Baltimore 24 - Berlin 10

Baltimore stifled Berlin's offense and held them to 10 points on the game in which Baltimore's top tier offense did enough to take the win with their strong defensive performance.

Piper and Francis were both very incorrect here and they drop to 1-2 on the season. Moore and Nox even them up now with all our writers being 1-2 after 3 weeks. Moore's prediction of Turnbull being a big factor was a bit off as he added just 4 catches for 31 yards in the game in his 5 targets. Nox also was a bit off in his player prediction as Robin only totaled 2 tackles in the game with no other stats but was part of an overall dominant defensive effort in keeping points off the board.

Week Three Players of the Week!

Austin grabs both awards for the week picking up the offensive and defensive player of the week trophies with their win over San Jose. QB Elizabeth II threw for nearly 500 yards and 4 touchdowns to just one interception including a game winning touchdown with 11 seconds to go in the game to win offensive player of the week. In a game that was decided by 3 points, it was definitely a worthy performance for player of the week from the Austin QB. The disgruntled linebacker last week Moloka'i put that frustration into his play this game with a multiple sack performance where he also forced and recovered a fumble and totaled 10 tackles. He was all over the field and while Austin still gave up a large point total, he at least made enough plays for Austin to deserve to win this one.

Optimistic LB Reminisces Back to Week 1!

Colorado Yeti linebacker Grayson Yates echoed similar words spoken by Honolulu's Sailor Moon this week when asked about the season. Yates went back to talk about week 1's loss against Sarasota even though the team had just won against Orange County in week 3! Maybe this was a quote picked up late or maybe he was just echoing the beginning of the season and how it started out. Either way, Yates is optimistic about the Yeti's future. In the week one game, Yates had 5 tackles and one sack and on the season he has 50 tackles and 5 sacks and is ready to help the team into the next era of Yeti football.

Week Four Game of the Week!

A consensus from our writers! All of them against the Baltimore Hawks and for the Sailfish. Let's uhhh get to the results.

Result: Baltimore 43 - Sarasota 26

All of our writers drop to 1-3. Player Big Tuna (BOT) who was pointed out by Jeremy Piper had just 2 pancakes on the day. Jim Nox who praised Sarasota's defense praised a defense that gave up 43 in this one or I guess 41 since there was a safety. Darren Francis said he would rake winnings on his bet so hopefully he did not put too much money on them. Also, remember, our writers placing bets has no effect on whether you put bets on the game and if you lost money based on it, it was your own decision. Practice responsible gambling.

Week Four Players of the Week!

Another team takes home both awards this week, this time the Baltimore Hawks who dominated the game of the week and caused poor Mr. Francis to lose some money in Las Vegas. Preston Beatz had one of the best QB performances of the season throwing all over the Sailfish defense for nearly 400 yards and 5 touchdowns! Just had one interception in the game but it did not matter too much as Baltimore dominated on the back of Beatz and his passing ability. Linebacker Sledge Hammer had a multi sack performance with a forced fumble and 6 tackles in a solid performance. While it was not otherworldly, it was a solid performance and of course we love to recognize great performances with more than one sack and a chance to force a fumble. The fumble was recovered by a Sarasota lineman so it did not result in a turnover.

Linebacker Callout!

Cape Town linebacker Barry Badman took a chance to call out another linebacker in the league that he just does not like. Badman went after Hayden randomly since the teams are not even scheduled to play this season but the two just seem to have bad blood and as it alludes to, it will be interesting to see if Hayden claps back. Both linebackers are having very good seasons for their teams. Badman on the season has 13 sacks, 2 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 tackles for loss while Hayden has 11 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 10 tackles for a loss, but no interceptions. I so wish these two teams played each other to see it all happen out on the field but for now, we will just see how this callout goes!

Week Five Game of the Week!

Another game of the week and another game with the Baltimore Hawks! Let's see if our writers give the Hawks a little more respect since they blew up the predictions last week with everyone picking against them!

Piper was on the fence but went with the Hawks. Moore shows some bias, maybe being from Colorado, but picks the Yeti and says they are the better team...yeah...okay! Jim Nox praises Baltimore head coach in the performance so far this season. Darren Francis praises the Baltimore defense in this affair and cites a bunch of stats.

Result: Baltimore 41 - Colorado 7

Mary Moore, that bias really hurt you here as you drop to 1-4 on the season through the 5 weeks. All the other writers go to 2-3 by picking Baltimore. The only players really talked about here are the Baltimore defense and they proved Darren Francis right and hopefully he won some money back on a bet.

Week Five Players of the Week!

Players of the week finally go to different teams here in two different conferences with Nedelko taking home offensive player of the week and Honestly taking home the defensive side of the award. Nedelko had an absolute monster game with 278 total yards and 5 total TDs against Orange County in what may be the offensive performance of the season. Honestly continues the trend of multiple sack defensive player of the year award and adds a forced fumble, interception, and 9 tackles in an impressive games against Chicago.

San Jose Infighting!

Bruce Talis is a rookie and certainly making an impression for the Sabercats. That may not be a great impression though as other teammates are calling him out for being a bit of a narcissist and it is wearing on a lot of Sabercats. So much so that wide receiver Keanu Calhoun starting throwing punches at Talis in a practice before the next game in week 6. The two had to be separated and we will see how that all goes as the season carries on especially if Talis is really upsetting people on the team. Maybe it is one thing for a long time veteran to be yelling and thinking he is the best but for a rookie to pull that, it is not a good career start. For his part, Talis does have 50 pancakes without giving up any sacks and has been a solid center for the team. Calhoun, the other player mentioned in the skirmish can certainly hold his own and leads the Sabercats in receptions and receiving yards with 67 and 857 respectively to go along with 5 touchdowns.

Conclusion

That wraps up the first 5 weeks of the ISFL newspaper and we had a lot of action going on with some infighting, player callouts, mostly poor predictions with some lost money, and some great player of the week performances! Let me know what you think of the newspaper review and hopefully we can have some more weeks covered in future articles further on in the season.

Preview

For the Week 13 Game of the Week, we will have New York taking on Colorado. New York is the top team in the ASFC but will be traveling on the road to Colorado to take on the Yeti. Our writers are split on it with Piper and Moore picking Colorado (of course Moore would pick the yeti, homer!) and Nox and Francis taking the Silverbacks. New York is riding a 5 game win streak but Colorado has a 4 game win streak of their own. One of the streaks has to come to an end, who will it be? Players to watch are the Colorado offense and Colorado defensive end Nathan Explosion.

Cake is on the line here if New York wins so I am rooting for the Silverbacks so Jeremy Piper has to give everyone some cake and we can all enjoy it in the break room. Also, Nathan Explosion supercharges the defense would have been a cool line if supercharges was not spelled wrong...oof Mary!

We root for cake. Go New York.

Till next time ISFL!
