I might be a rookie, but that doesn’t mean I can’t tell you all of the good stories we have behind the scenes. Let’s start out with my first OTAs.
I am still only the 3rd Cornerback on the team (yes it does suck to not be the best player on the team) anyways. I go out for my first play Thomas Sutha runs a quick little curl route. (He beat me good on his first couple steps.) I went back to go tackle him and he trucked me. Not my finest moment The Red Panda made a tackle. Thomas comes back and says “get big young blood”. Seriously? Why would you morally wound your own rookie teammate? Who knows well I needed my revenge and as I said before I don’t take no for an answer. So next time I tell coach I’m going to press him. I pressed him hard he makes a first cut to the inside then makes a second cut to the outside and I grab his pad knowing full well I’m about to get blown out of the water. And Coach called it. “We don’t play that crap that’s what loses us games don’t cut corners play him right”. So the 3rd time I’m playing a zone he makes a quick bubble route. He heads out of bounds for a quick 2 yards while I’m pursuing him. That’s cool as well. So 4th play 2nd and 8 trying to cover him so we don’t go down by 2 scores. Coach gives me a man coverage. TurnDaBallOva makes a signal towards Thomas giving him a different route I assumed. Tua sets the play with a 3 step drop back and as soon as Thomas releases his hands off me from the contact I immediately read that it is a fade. All the way to the end zone. I’m not gonna get beat this time. So I immediately book it after him I see Tua make the pass in the end zone back corner I turn around and put my hands up and swat it away. Coach tells me good job. We line up again. I immediately see the same play unfolding. We both head to the end zone this time Tua underthrows the ball and well Tua indeed turned the ball over. That was my first ever OtA scrimmage. We had our normal training drill which about killed me. I finally figured out my endurance wasn’t where it needed to be so I trained and trained and trained for this moment for our first game and it didn’t go as I planned. As soon as we got on the field we were in for a blowout. We’ve shown signs of being a solid team overall. We just need to keep putting in work on the field.
