*S45 – DROY Power Rankings - CaptainDMG - 12-19-2023

This is the tenth installment of this media series and it occurred to me that I do not actually know how the process of Defensive Rookie of the Year is decided or who votes to on it. I have had a couple of discussions about awards in the ISFL and it is always surrounded by cynicism and the phrase “rigged”. There is a common saying in within many institutions and groups that goes, “you cannot please everyone all the time”. This is usually followed up with a “there is no perfect system”. Unfortunately, both of those sayings tend to be more true than not which is why they have become so commonplace. However, in the interest of creating a *BETTER* system, I would suggest that the end of season awards be calculated by a weighted average system. For instance, DROY can tallied by...

25% = League User Vote
25% = GM Vote
50% = Head Office or whatever committee/entity currently decides this vote

But most importantly, this all should be tabulated by spreadsheet (like we do for host city voting) so there is some transparency to help limit "collusion".

Moreover, I think this weighted average system is helpful since positions are not necessarily apples to apples, and *some* subjectivity does need to take place. Much like in the NFL, the MVP has basically turned into a QB award (because yes, QBs are arguably the most important/valuable position to a team) while the Offensive Player of the Year tends to go to the best non-QB. I believe if the NFL had a weighted average system of some form for the MVP award (versus just a 50-person committee) then Tyreek Hill would probably win the award this season.

Although, the reason why I bring this up is because a lot of Hall of Fame discussions (for the ISFL and NFL) circle around accolades like All-Pro, Pro-Bowl, and championships, with their stats being a “1B” to the argument. Case in point, is Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver, Mike Evans a Hall of Famer? He has had 10-straight seasons of 1,000yds, 4 Pro-Bowls, and 1 Championship… but is he more Hall of Fame worthy than the following wide receivers…

Mike Evans: 745 receptions, 11,445 yds, 91 tds
4 Pro-Bowls, 1 Championship

Anquan Boldin: 1,076 receptions, 13,779 yds, 82 tds
Rookie of the Year, 3 Pro-Bowls, 1 Championship, Walter Payton Man of the Year

Andre Johnson: 1,062 receptions, 14,185 yds, 70 tds
7 Pro-Bowls, 2 All-Pro, led NFL in receptions twice, led NFL in receiving yards twice

Steve Smith Sr.: 1,031 receptions, 14,731 yds, 81 tds
5 Pro-Bowls, 2 All-Pro, led NFL in receptions once, led NFL in receiving yards once, led NFL in receiving yards tds once

Reggie Wayne: 1,070 receptions, 14,345 yds, 82 tds
6 Pro-Bowls, 1 All-Pro, 1 Championship, led NFL in receiving yards once

Torry Holt: 920 receptions, 13,382 yds, 74 tds
7 Pro-Bowls, 1 All-Pro, 1 Championship, led NFL in receptions once, led NFL in receiving yards twice

I will leave the ISFL Hall of Fame discussion for a later time, but I wanted to make sure this awards discussion was in the ether so others could weigh in as well.

In addition to the power rankings for this installment, we are going to take another examination of the defensive stats index (https://index.sim-football.com/ISFLS45/LeagueDefensiveStats.html) and see how each rookie sizes up to their veteran competition ten weeks in.

As a reminder, if you missed how the DROY Power Ranking score is calculated, see the first installment of this series here (https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=48722)
