*S45 – DROY Power Rankings - CaptainDMG - 12-21-2023

With three-quarters of the season done, we have now entered into the final stretch of games. The playoff picture is beginning to take shape as we see teams trying to clinch a spot while others are trying to stave off elimination from contention. However, in the vein of “sim gonna sim”, there is not much that can really be done to improve your team’s chances of winning at this point. With effectively only two update weekends before the last IRL week of the regular season, it basically goes down to each team’s strategies (which, for the most part, is controlled by the GMs/War Rooms) and the simulation itself to determine who wins and who loses. With that being said, what does that mean for most users who are in the league just looking for a good time regardless of their player’s and team’s success? Ultimately, it comes down to exactly what we need to be focusing on this holiday season anyway… enjoying yourself and sharing your joy with others.

This time of year can be difficult for people for many reasons: financial difficulties, lost loved ones, no loved ones/feeling alone, weather issues, etc. Understandably, it can be quite difficult to experience joy yourself let alone sharing joy that you might not feel. However, here is my counterpoint. My great assumption is that if you are reading this article, you have some sort of electronic device/capability to access the internet, live inside some sort of residence that is not a day-to-day situation, and can remember the last time you have eaten. Meaning, your electronic device can provide you the luxury of entertainment (through games, videos, connecting with others, etc.), you live in a place that shelters you from the frigid temperatures, and you have the basic human need to survive/subsist (likely) available steps away in a refrigerator. This is not some hokey public service announcement; it is a way that I can share my joy to the league this holiday season.

You see, I have struggled with my mental health most of my life. Among a myriad of other garbage things that occurred when I was young, I grew up in poverty in a low-income neighborhood to immigrant parents. I do not share that to “vent” or seek pity, I share that because it is a realistic look at circumstances that I could not control. Yet now that I have “overcome” my situation and can control many things, I still find that joy and happiness have eluded me… but at least I have found out why. One of the main causes of my anhedonia is that I am ungrateful a lot of the time. I was able to uncover this root cause because I was fortunate enough to move past the stigma of going to therapy and get the help I needed, which has changed my life. One of the things that therapy has taught me is that gratitude is a key component to experiencing joy and happiness in your life.

So below is a flowchart-esque way of keeping our focus this holiday season:

#1. Are you enjoying yourself? If yes, proceed to #2. If no, proceed to #5.

#2. Are you sharing your joy with others? If yes, proceed to #3. If no, proceed to #4.

#3. Keep up the good work and keep repeating #1 and #2.

#4. Find a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor, or stranger to share your joy with. When you are done, proceed to #3.

#5. Make a list of 10 things (that you have the time and can afford to do) that you enjoy doing and then do them. When you are done, proceed to #1.

Contrary to what some might believe (and this might be the most controversial part of this article), our lives (“IRL”) are not a simulation. “Sim gonna sim” is a thing, but “life gonna life” is letting external factors control what *you* can control. Like I said earlier, if you are reading this, you are most likely able to control a good number of things that can bring you joy… so please, enjoy yourself this holiday season!
