Defensive Line Standouts - Week 7

Welcome to week 7 of our Season 3 Defensive Line Standouts! One of our Big 3 fails to make the list this week, ending the streak at 6 consecutive weeks. Although we don’t have any record breaking performances this week, Tuck continues to inch closer (or should I say take big steps closer) to the season sack record. Something that will certainly become a rarity from here on out, we have another player making his first performance. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!

Defensive End Top Performers

J. Tuck ARI ($ x6) 10 TCK, 5 SCK
Another week, another stupid good performance from Tuck. Week in and week out (well, except for week 5) this man turns in performances that any other defensive lineman would kill for. His 10 tackles and 5 sacks this past week are no different. Teams need to find a solution for him, and fast, as he is a game-breaker left unchecked. Through 7 games Tuck has accrued 21 sacks, and is on pace to shatter the current record of 26 sacks with a mind-numbing total of 42 sacks on the season. He’ll head to Yellowknife next week to face a Wraiths squad that has allowed only 19 sacks on the year.

O. Taylor BAL ($$$$) 4 TCK, 2 TFL, 1 SCK, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered, 1 safety
Taylor continued his breakout season this week with an all-around performance that would make any coach happy. He finished the game with a stat line of 4 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered, and 1 safety. He was a man playing like his hair was on fire all game. In the end, it just wasn’t enough though, as the Hawks fell to the Wraiths. Taylor has already beat (or tied) his number of tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks from last year. The Hawks will start their 4-game home stretch against the Orange County Otters this week.

B. Metas BAL BAL ($$$$) 5 TCK, 2 TFL, 1 SCK
Our second of three Hawks on the list tonight, Metas has shown he can be a star from anywhere on the line as he has now made out list twice from each the defensive tackle and defensive end spots. Much like his teammate, Taylor, Metas was all over the field this week and finished with a stat line of 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Metas will have tough sledding next week as he’s going to be lined up against one of the top tackles in the NSFL, either Winchester or Clegane.

Other Great Performers

D. Davidson PHI ($$$) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
E. Gustavsson YKW ($$) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
A. Tomlinson OCO ($ x5) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
Davidson makes his third appearance here this week with a solid performance in the Liberty beat-down of the Las Vegas Legion. Gustavsson, our lone rookie on the defensive end list, is making his second appearance here and did well against a Hawks offensive line that has only allowed 12 sacks through 7 games. Tomlinson continues his hot streak and was finally able to get to the quarterback this week but, at the expense of any tackles for loss that he has been racking up lately. This is his fourth appearance on our list.

Defensive Tackle Top Performers

R. Sandoval BAL ($ x7) 9 TCK, 1 SCK
The final Hawk on our list, Sandoval continued his domination of the interior line this week with 9 tackles and 1 sack. His 7 sacks on the year tie him with fellow rookie sensation, King, for second most sacks among defensive tackles. The difference between the two however, has been Sandoval’s play in run support. He averages 2+ tackles a game more than King does, and is the reason he has been on our list so many more times. Look for Sandoval and Hendrix to have big games next week against the Otters as Metas and Taylor will be heavily occupied on the edges.

V. Cox LVL ($ x5) 4 TCK, 2 SCK
Making his fifth appearance on our list, Cox has proved that he doesn’t need Ramrio by his side to be a success. With another solid performance, this time with 4 tackles and 2 sacks, Cox is having a great year but, just happens to be on a bad team. He’d be catching a few more eyes if his team could just steal a few games down the road. Cox will face middle of the road SaberCats next week when San Jose comes to town.

G. King ARI ($$$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Continuing his recent hot streak, King is making his third appearance in a row, this time with 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack. King has really come into his own as of late and should be in the discussion for defensive rookie of the year, along with rival rookie defensive tackle, Ricardo Sandoval. King is headed to Yellowknife next week for a tough road test against a solid Wraiths squad.

Other Great Performers

J. Cox OCO ($) 5 TCK, 2 TFL
D. Miller SJS ($ x7) 4 TCK, 1 TFL
S. Skidmarks COL ($$$) 6 TCK
Cox is the only player making his first appearance on our list this week and did so with 5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. An impressive line for someone who had never appeared here before. Miller keeps his streak going at 7 with a solid performance of 4 tackles and 1 tackles for loss. Skidmarks, although inactive, has had a solid season so far, and is making his third appearance on our list this week.

Team Appearances After Week 7*

Baltimore: 17
San Jose: 13
Orange County: 11
Arizona: 10
Yellowknife: 9
Las Vegas: 9
Philadelphia: 8
Colorado: 7

The top 3 remains unchanged, however, Baltimore has increased their lead over San Jose to 4, while Orange County has narrowed the gap to San Jose to 2. The only real change in the standings comes from Arizona and Yellowknife swapping places, with Arizona now at #4 and Yellowknife now at #5. For the first time since week 4, every team made an appearance on our list. On a sad note, our Big 3 has now become the Big 2. Dan Miller and Ricardo Sandoval both made our list this week to make it an impressive 7 out of 7 weeks, however, Bork Bjornsson was absolutely stonewalled by the Hawks and did not register a single tackle. He still accounts for the highest percentage of any team appearances though, at 67%. As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below.

*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole. For example, Arizona leads the league in sacks by a 14 but, is currently fourth on our list in number of individual appearances.
