*Wevis Disgwuntled? - AW13 - 02-08-2024

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Reports coming out of New Orleans are indicating that one of the Second Line's young players, Dawelle Wevis, is unhappy after some recent transactions made by the team. New Orleans made a move recently to acquire star players Liv Elsathelookout and Billy Jor-El from New Orleans for a couple replacement players and 2 first round picks (Season 47 and 48 first round picks from New Orleans). Sources indicate that Wevis was approached by team management prior to the deal to alert of this and how it may alter the young cornerback's playing time and he had expressed disinterest in that.

With the acquisition of Jor-El, Wevis would move to the slot taking over the spot by the departing Inspector Gadget in the deal and only be in Nickel or 3-3-5 formations opposed to his previous full slate of defensive snaps. The current secondary of New Orleans as well would then include the younger high caliber corners such as Billy Jor-El and Ezra Azazel and good young safeties Scott Junior and Paul Edgecomb so the slot is the only place for Wevis. With the age of the secondary, it is entirely possible that someone is being left out of the max possible snaps for multiple seasons and although things could change or swap around, the indications are that the young Wevis would be the player to be left out.

On the season, Wevis leads the Second Line in interceptions with 3 in the first 6 games while also having 6 pass defenses as well for a solid start to his ISFL career. The potential for defensive rookie of the year is there but how will moving to the slot as opposed to outside affect that, that remains to be seen. Looking at game tape, Wevis has been able to cover his assignment well and limit the targets of his opponents and make plays when they are targeted in the passing game. While he is still young and growing, he has indeed shown the ability to make plays on the field and is gearing up for a hopeful long and productive ISFL career.

The feelings around the Wevis camp are that he understands that it is a business and has no fault on New Orleans management for making the move to improve their team. Wevis' frustration as we are hearing come from essentially being demoted from his position in the middle of the season on an 0-6 team in what has been so far a stellar rookie season. New Orleans' defense has not been great this season by the numbers but Wevis is not being heavily targeted and watching game film, a lot of the big plays are coming over the middle it appears. It is possible the addition of Wevis to more of a middle position can help that but it is not always an easy transition going from outside corner to slot and vice versa. Wevis is not a strong tackler and the underneath routes could pose problems overall for a shifty slot receiver going against him.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for New Orleans and how this move impacts the franchise as a whole but the one player it affects a decent amount, Wevis, is a bit frustrated with a demotion. On a mutual option next year, if these reports are correct, it does appear like it may be hard to retain Wevis long term if he is just that 5th secondary player.
