*Cushing Actually Makes a Statement First - kckolbe - 09-30-2017

Hello, everyone. After giving it a lot of thought, I've decided to change positions to cornerback. Fans who've been watching us the last two years know that when I joined the team, linebacker was their biggest need, but with Luke Tiernan and Wyatt Fulton coming in and just cleaning up, I'm not needed there as much. Our secondary, meanwhile, does need some help, and I've been spending more and more time in that role. I decided it would be easier to focus on coverage by making an official change.

I'll take any questions.

Considering your last time playing corner went poorly, why do you think you'll be up to the task now?
Yeah, it wasn't a great experience, but I learned a lot from it, and I'm still convinced the theory is sound. Remember Ghost and the Darkness? Good movie. Honestly, though, I think I was up to it in terms of skill and ability, but I wasn't up to it in terms of conditioning. When our offense was able to move the chains, I did great against him. I put on a LOT of weight since coming to Yellowknife in order to hit harder, and that really put a limit on my speed and stamina. Now that I've started dropping that weight, I am noticing a huge difference in both.

What do you think your biggest challenge will be in making the position shift?
Learning the competition, really. By that I mean learning both what other cornerbacks are doing as well as the wide receivers I line up across from. I spent a lot of time learning the strengths and weaknesses of the RBs in the league, but I'm not quite as up to date on how to get the advantage on the wide receivers.

What will you miss most about playing linebacker?
Camaraderie and real rivalry. I felt I was just starting to get to the point where I was able to compete against other, more experienced linebackers, but it really wasn't the same, since I had such a hybrid role. I think that will always be the case, though.

Are you worried about making a permanent decision based on temporary conditions? What if you change teams or the Wraiths' personnel changes around you?
Realistically, there will never be a scheme I won't be a leader on. I'm just too versatile. Worst case scenario, I could still play a weak linebacker, though I could also play free or strong safety. It's not like I completely forgot how to lay a hit on folks, though since dropping weight that's definitely less effective.
