S41 gang

Ahem, now that THAT is out of the way, it’s no secret that the season 41 class has played a major role in shaping the ISFL landscape. From saving the DSFL from probably contraction, to bringing in power users that continue in important roles, season 41 holds a near and dear place in my heart as well as in this league. While I did a S41 draft review immediately following the draft, I thought it would be fun to see how the class is doing currently as well as how the ISFL has fared after getting their hands on the largest class in recent seasons. We’re staring down the barrel of our 1st regression, so I wanted to get this out before we become boomers of the league (if we aren’t already).

I’ll be looking at how the players themselves are doing, mainly activity and TPE level. I wanted to see how each team drafted by looking at what the players have earned as far as TPE goes. I also wanted to see if those players are still on the team, so I’m going to give a % of TPE that’s still remaining from their draft. If they traded for an S41 gang, I didn’t count it. I tried to catch as many IA/retirements as I could. I basically considered someone IA if they haven’t done anything this calendar year. I’ll try to add in jobs or awards if I can remember them, but I ain’t looking at everything. So feel free to yell at me in the comments if I missed something. Also, get rekt nerd.

I’ll also be looking at team success. Overall win/loss, playoff win/loss, and championships. I’ll give their record prior to the S41 draft so we can all see how far they’ve come! I’m stealing the format of draft picks from @TheRake, so if anything is screwed up, blame him.

Also, this info was up to date at the end of S46. Anything thats happened since then is doo doo. Anyways, here we go!

New York Silverbacks NYS

Summary: I don’t think you could ask for a better draft where they have the top 2 earners in the entire class in Wiz and Jumbo, but they also got 1000+ TPE earners out of both of their 3rd round picks. Their last 3 picks didn’t pan out to be much, but that’s not very surprised at that point in the draft.

During the seasons since the S41 class, they only made the big dance once, in S43. And they did not come home with the trophy after being the regular season #1 seed. All 4 of their high earning picks were on the S43 team that helped propel them to the finals, but it’s looking like the end of the road as their win rate has slowly dropped each season since then. At least the S41 draft brought them their long time GM in @wizard_literal, who’s orb has always given them a fighting chance.

Baltimore Hawks BAL

Summary: Going into the S41 draft, it was always a part of the conversation that Baltimore is going to miss out on a large chunk of the great users that were coming in. I’m actually a bit surprised that they still have anyone remaining from their draft, but Bubba Chubb has earned enough to keep a spot on their offensive line, which is a good indication that you don’t need to be a max earner to have a roster spot.

Baltimore has had a great record since the draft, but it’s not due to their S41 draft class. They ended up winning the S43 Ultimus with Bubba Chubb anchoring the center position, so it wasn’t for nothing. So despite Baltimore being a constant playoff/Ultimus threat, it is despite the S41 class, not because of it.

Honolulu Hahalua HON

Summary: Honolulu was ending it’s first tank under Icebear as the S41 class was coming on board, so rumors at the time were that Honolulu is a bad team that was fun to hang out with. The S41 class signaled an end to the tank as they got power user @LtHudz, who has just started his ISFL GM’ing tenure for Honolulu. Picking up GOAT Ray Baker aka @jdc4654 in the 2nd was worth every penny, as Ray was 5/5 on field goals (including 3 50+ yarders) in their S44 Ultimus victory. Nabbing a 1000+ TPE linebacker in the 3rd is definitely a steal, and Liath helped shore up their defensive needs during their run. Even their 4th round IA pick is still on the team, which has assuredly saved them cap space to build up in other spots.

Honolulu has famously entered another tank in hopes of building up capital to make another run. If they can hit on a draft class like this one, then I don’t see why @IceBear32 can’t bring home another trophy in a couple of seasons.

San Jose SabreCats SJS

Summary: What an absolute weird draft for San Jose. Jumbo was slated to become NOLA GM until his tampering punishment, so everyone thought San Jose got a steal by getting him in the early 2nd. Unfortunately, he eventually went IA and San Jose was unable to get the max earner that they had hoped for. Getting @Urq660 with their second 2nd round pick was definitely the highlight of their draft, as urq took over for longtime GM @ckroyal92 after he finally stepped down. Getting DL in the 3rd could have been a great get had DL not retired and then recreate. Modest Mussorgsky is still a useful piece on their offensive line, but unfortunately the user went IA as well. Getting Otto in the 4th was also a great value until they ALSO went IA. Their final gem of the draft was none other than Kenny Szymborksi, one of the last remaining active TE’s in the entire league.

Looking back at their draft class is wild. They had so much promise, but various IRL and league related circumstances just mired this group in mediocrity, which is reflected by their record since this draft. Hopefully they can get some good users back in so Josh Patterson (S42) has a chance capitalize on his capped QB build before the regression monster gets him, too.

Summary: Another draft class that makes you wonder, what could have been? Charles is a stud, as user eightytwo fell to the middle 2nd round. Burnt Toast was a decent swap to OL that you had hoped they could get a bit more TPE before going IA, but as always, OL is a fine position for not needing to be maxed. They absolutely crushed the Nick Williams pick, who recently swapped to WR but has since been traded as Berlin needs more assets. Van Ness was a controversial pick back then, and after forcing their way out of Berlin, his true colors came to light and has since been banned. Their late 4th round pick, Duanei, has been a solidly earning WR for them who has moved around some since going IA.

Berlin’s record since the S41 draft has been a perfect mirror in terms of record. They have made the playoffs quite a few times, but their loss in the S42 Ultimus has been their peak since then. Their draft goes to show that sometimes you can draft amazingly but real life can have other plans.

New Orleans Second Line NOLA

Summary: I’m sure most of you scrolled to find this team. Three straight 1-15 seasons is pretty impressive. But I won’t punch down (s/o @toofpete). I won’t harp on the various moves that were made after this draft, such as trading for ajax or the 1st round swap with AZ. They absolutely nailed this draft with their first 3 picks, then got what seemed like a good earner in Rosadino in the 5th round. Unfortunately for NOLA, their window to capitalize on these 3 max earning picks is closing soon. They traded for the corpse of Hudz to help, but he’ll be gone after this next season.

I do hope NOLA is able to show out this next season or 2, as they are just a fun bunch of people. They’ve had to overcome a lot, but Toof and now @Tmoney6996 are working diligently to ensure as much success for NOLA as they can. The S41 class may have just set them up enough to get over the speedbumps that have popped up along the way.

Colorado Yeti COL

Summary: This draft group was poised to be loaded as Colorado had 3 first round picks, with @aeonsjenni being the highlight of the class. Getting her at 2oa was a boon to Colorado, then grabbing a max earner in ElMerchanto at 7 then stud recreate @infinitempg at 11 to be their QB of the future meant Colorado was going to become a force in the NSFC. Unfortunately, after some miscommunication, Colorado traded Craig Brand to CTC where he eventually went IA and recreated again recently. They nailed another DB in Gates in the 3rd round, who has been a solid mid-earner for the Yeti. Banjo showed some promise before they went IA as well.

Only making the playoffs once in the last 6 seasons is definitely not what Colorado intended to happen since this class was drafted. Losing Brand after the draft was definitely a big loss as they had intended him to anchor the defense, along with Mary Marie, for seasons to come. Ultimately, they snagged one of the best users in the class as well as the ISFL in jenni, so even though the S41 class hasn’t resulted in an increase in the win column, I’m sure the Yeti are very very pleased to have their crop of users.

Sarasota Sailfish SAR

Summary: This actually was a pretty good draft from Sarasota. @Sizz is a great, albeit quiet, user who is currently 3rd in the class for TPE. While I’m sure Sarasota had hoped for more production from their 2nd round pick, they’ve gotten at least a serviceable OL out of the pick. Damarcus Cole is a good, solid mid-earner, which is just fine for the DT position, and probably more than you could ask for in a 4th rounder. Berry backed up Pete Zuh for a bit and was fine, while getting a serviceable linebacker in Dede in the 5th is excellent value.

With such a solid draft, Sarasota would have hoped to have been anything other than the Jeff Fischer of the ISFL, wallowing in near perfect mediocrity for most of the seasons. They did make it to the Ultimus in S45, but was outgunned by Austin. Sometimes with this sim, all you need to do is give yourself a chance by getting into the playoffs and letting the dice roll. Sarasota is a perennial threat to make it into the top spot, but I’m sure they would like to be the top dogs (or fish, rather) at least once. I blame @Fronk’s fish emote.

Austin Copperheads AUS

Summary: While I’m sure Austin would love to have had more picks in this draft, the results since S41 have still been in there favor, despite the kind of ugly draft. Tolliver is a great earner but eventually made it over to OCO. Knock was not a high earner and also no longer plays for Austin. Their big home run, and probably steal of the draft, was Khali in the 5th round. The last remaining player on Austin from the S41 class was a good earning offensive lineman.

Austin has made the playoffs quite frequently since the S41 draft and took home the Ultimus in S45. So despite their lack of success in the draft, they still had a solid squad and continued to make moves to bolster their roster. It’s looking like their team is getting a bit older at some key positions (minus Jay Cue III), so we’ll see if they can hold on a bit longer before a full rebuild is needed.

Cape Town Crash CTC

Summary: Ummmm, wow. That’s about all I can say. Cape Town absolutely smashed the S41 draft. Their first 6 picks have earned like crazy and are still actively earning. Their kicker is their worst active player, but even 602 TPE is perfect for a kicker in order to not eat up too much cap space. @jollyjiggs and @crash1005 are 2 of my favorite users from this class, even though they aren’t active as much (Jolly, we demand more WifeCast).

To be honest their decline in winning record these last seasons leaves me a bit baffled with having such a big TPE amount from these users. This must correspond with the decline of @negs obviously. So they are definitely back in contention with Thor getting up their in TPE and the stank finally clearing from the locker room.

Orange County Otters OCO

S40 Record: 7-8-1

Summary: Orange County didn’t have a ton of picks in this draft, but they definitely got some amazing users out of it. John Stark VIII (no relation to the Game of Thrones Stark family) has been a study for OCO since he got called up, while the user @UptownCord has been GM’ing them for quite a number of seasons. They also nailed their 3rd round selection, getting the Banhammer who has held down the starting quarterback position since S43. Their next 2 picks, which were mid 4th and 5th rounders, did a great job of earning initially, but Stud has since retired and Mabry is a decently effective offensive lineman for Baltimore. With the few picks they did have, they did a really solid job drafting.

Unfortunately, their good draft has not done them many favors. They only have 2 playoff appearances since the S41 draft, and both were 1 and done. They have a perfect .500 record since then, as well. With Stark anchoring the defense and Bannings leading the offense, their window may be slowly closing for this team to get their remaining S41 draft picks a championship trophy.

Chicago Butchers CHI

S40 Record: 12-4

Summary: Outside of @TheRake, Chicago had an ok team building draft. Not something that would tip the scales in your favor consistently, but they really didn’t draft anyone that went IA right away, save for their infamous 6th round pick. And unfortunately for Chicago, you’ll need more than just a max earner at safety if you want a game changer. I know Rico has played CB, but still, this was a spectacularly solid draft from top to bottom.

Without getting mainstays at prominent positions, Chicago fell off quickly since going 12-4 in S40. They have not even had a double digit win total in any of the seasons since. They had 1 playoff appearance and that was in S41, their last chance before hoping the S41 class could save them. Ultimately, this would have been a great complimentary class to help build around other studs to get them back to greatness, but they just don’t have those pieces.

Yellowknife Wraiths YKW

S40 Record: 12-4

Summary: For the S41 draft class, Yellowknife was coming off of an Ultimus loss to Arizona, so they certainly had the right pieces in place and hoped for a great draft to keep their momentum going. They absolutely nailed their 1st round pick in Claypool, and had in real life events not happened to Terry Johnson’s user, the first 3 picks for the Wraiths could have significantly helped them maintain their dominance.

As you can see from their season records, the trend was not really going in the right direction. It didn’t really nosedive, save for S45, but it hasn’t spiked either. They did end up making the Ultimus in S46 but was once again beat by Arizona. Claypool is a definite force on their defensive side of the ball, and had Terry Johnson been able to continue with their pace, the Wraith defense would have lived up to their history for a long time. I’d love to see @Weaves get a trophy before Claypool succumbs to the inevitable regression thief.

Arizona Outlaws ARI

Summary: If you are actually reading this summary, you’re either on Arizona or you hate Arizona and wanted to see what I’d say. Any press is good press, as they say. Arizona was coming off an Ultimus victory in S40 and looked to reload, which in my unbiased opinion, had one of, if not the best, drafts of all the teams. Grabbing Benji in round 1, who eventually obtained the WR1 spot and locking that down for seasons to come, has helped shape the offense to be very efficient through the air. Logjammed would have been a max earning stud had he not quickly retired after the draft. Duvernay is one of the best CB’s in the league. Vincent-Vega has had many splash plays in critical situations. Yoshi Jr is just serving up pancakes left and right. Even their mid-4th round pick has earned enough to be a good stop-gap defensive lineman.

Boasting one of the top TPE totals from the draft, along with a high retention rate, has allowed Arizona to continue to be Ultimus contenders year in and year out. By far the most Ultimus appearances, championships, playoff wins/appearances, and regular season record since the S41 draft concluded. Obviously not all of the success is due to the S41 class, but there’s no denying the roles each player has played in continuing to keep the Outlaws on top.

During the S46 season, I kept commenting on how stacked our draft was and it is selfishly what lead to me writing this article as I was curious how other teams had drafted, retained, and developed the deep S41 class. While it’s not the direct cause of winning or losing, as evidenced by various teams success rates and drafts, team building is an art that few have consistently achieved.

I have made a pretty little chart, sorted by TPE drafted, that you can get a quick overall picture of how well teams drafted that season as well as how they’ve performed since then. Thanks for taking a look and I can’t wait to get roasted in the comments, as usual!
