The Unofficial Preseason Rankings of the ISFL
ISFL BAL YKW COL ARI OCO SJS CTC NOLA CHI AUS SAR HON BER NYS ISFL

Hello everyone! Season 47 of the ISFL will be kicking off soon! While it may be difficult to predict which team will bring home the Ultimus, that never stops us from trying! Using TPE as a guide, we can however come up with some pretty good guesses.

In order to come up with a score for each team, I took a look at three categories: the TPE of the presumed starting 11 offensive players (including oline bots), the TPE of the presumed starting 11 defensive players, and the TPE of the quarterback (a second time!).

While raw TPE is one of our measures of how skilled a player is, there is a point where more TPE doesn't actually increase the skill of the player. While this cap is different for each archetype, the amount of TPE that a player contributes to the team total will stop at that value for this exercise (this is between 1165 and 1355). So a player with over that value only contributes up to their archetype cap.

With each of these scores calculated, I standardized each TPE total separately (I know, small sample size and probably not normally distributed but it works for what I want it to do!) A team’s preseason rating was then the sum of these three z-scores. To take it a step further, if each team's sum was rounded to the nearest whole number, that became my prediction on how many games above or below .500 a team will finish this year.

Also included are the community's thoughts on teams going into the season. For this first time around, they include the Season Predictions that were posted by 9:15pm CDT (155 responses).

Onto the rankings!

New Additions
QB Preston Beatz (@DarknessRising)
WR Tim Riggins (@shahdude)
CB SkibidiGyat OhioRizzler (@"Cloud")
S Felix Waterman (@Will3)
S Bunny (@Bunny)

Star Spotlight: S Mary Marie (@aeonsjenni)
The top player on a team declaring a rebuild at the start of the season, one has to wonder how long Marie will stay on the Yeti this season. Regardless, the Yeti’s strong safety was a menace all over the field last season, recording 6 sacks to go along with 2 interceptions and scored a touchdown on defense as well as on special teams.

13. Berlin Fire Salamanders BER
Offensive TPE: 6366 (14th)
Defensive TPE: 7360 (11th)
QB TPE: 865 (13th)

New Additions
QB Tuna TurnDaBallOva (@SomeSay...)
RB Willie Swaggert (@GlimsTC)
WR Pitter Patter (@r0tzbua)

Star Spotlight: WR Emile Charles (@Number 82)
The top earner on Berlin comes off a stellar season in which they led the ISFL with 13 receiving touchdowns and had the highest yards per reception, 14.3 yards, of any player with over 70 receptions. Charles looks to show the league that the barely used return specialist receiver archetype can be effective if placed in the top role for more than one season.

12. Honolulu Hahalua HON
Offensive TPE: 7815 (6th)
Defensive TPE: 5661 (14th)
QB TPE: 893 (11th)

S46 Results: 2-14, 7th Place in the ASFC

LB JJ What (@JJ5)
LB Rush Hardman (@ThunderTitan82)
CB Hearty Harry (@frazzle14)
CB Roquefort Cotswald (@roquefort)

Star Spotlight: K/P Ray Baker (@jdc4654)
So what does being the top earning kicker in the league get you? Baker made the longest field goal in the ISFL last season (60 yards), tied for the most made field goals of over 50 yards (5), and had the top punting average (50.3 yards). Unfortunately, the Hahalua are not in a position to see these special teams benefits turn into very many wins as they begin their rebuild with a league high 9 new users this season.

11. Chicago Butchers CHI
Offensive TPE: 7379 (11th)
Defensive TPE: 8666 (8th)
QB TPE: 871 (12th)

New Additions
RB Corey Trevor (@DigDoug11)
TE Neil Bonnet (@MMAJAKE710)
OL Ivan Ivanov (@kmatt)
DT Frumious Bandersnatch (@Michiganonymous)
S Dewey Greenbeans (@dcphil)

Star Spotlight: S Rico Savage (@TheRake)
The only maxed out player on the Chicago roster, Savage set a career high in tackles last season even if their ball hawking stats took a dip. Also a more than capable returner (3rd most kick return yards in the ISFL last season), Savage should cause headaches for opposing offenses on a regular basis.

10. New York Silverbacks NYS
Offensive TPE: 8091 (5th)
Defensive TPE: 7232 (13th)
QB TPE: 1063 (8th)

New Additions
FB Leandre Diarra (@slate)
OL Saveour Piethons (@LeatherneckMike)
DE Good Player (@Lego)
S Drake Wane (@Amkamkamk)

Star Spotlight: S Loose Cannon (@Jumbo)
The current ISFL leader in TPE, Cannon can be the jack of all trades for a defense that is lacking in playmakers. Last season saw Cannon with 70 tackles, 2 FF, 4 sacks, and 2 INT, a performance that should be duplicated. In a stacked conference though, it might be more of chasing personal accolades than team success.

9. Sarasota Sailfish SAR
Offensive TPE: 7286 (12th)
Defensive TPE: 9560 (4th)
QB TPE: 1031 (9th)

S46 Result: 9-7, 2nd Place in the NSFC, Wildcard Loss

7th Place Votes: 4

New Additions
WR Léopold Roy (@Gordon Bombay)
OL Raw Cheese McPickle (@Eric Belmont)

Star Spotlight: LB Max Honestly (@Sizz)
One of the league’s premier linebackers, Honestly has racked up 50 sacks in 5 seasons in the ISFL. Entering their peak season, look for Honestly to once again to lead the Sailfish defense in hopes of giving the offense enough support to return to the playoffs once again.

8. Yellowknife Wraiths YKW
Offensive TPE: 7795 (7th)
Defensive TPE: 8631 (10th)
QB TPE: 1067 (7th)

S46 Result: 8-8, 3rd Place in NSFC, Ultimus loss

New Additions
RB Eilliot Berry (@titanfan34)
WR Nick Williams (@nickWilliams)
CB Sergei Nunkanblok (@theskinnyman)

Star Spotlight: WR Nick Williams (@nickWilliams)
After making it to the Ultimus without a receiver going over 1000 yards, the Wraiths made a big splash in the offseason trading a 1st and 2nd round pick to Berlin for Williams. As the number two option in Berlin, Williams was able to put up 1186 yards with 8 touchdowns. This season, we get to see Williams show us what they can do as the #1 option on a team with playoff expectations.

7. Austin Copperheads AUS
Offensive TPE: 7667 (8th)
Defensive TPE: 8687 (7th)
QB TPE: 1137 (5th)

S46 Results: 10-6, 3rd Place in the ASFC, Championship Game Loss

New Additions
DE Frederick Carlson (@Pfluginator5)

Star Spotlight: RB Howard Coward (@JKortesi81)
Posting their best yardage totals on the ground and through the air, Coward looks to completely take over as the star of the Copperheads offense. With no other skill position player on offense even close in terms of TPE, Coward will need to become one of the top backs in the league for Austin to be able to return to the postseason in a tough ASFC.

6. Cape Town Crash CTC
Offensive TPE: 8922 (3rd)
Defensive TPE: 8822 (6th)
QB TPE: 934 (10th)

S46 Result: 7-9, 5th Place in the NSFC

New Additions
RB Hercules Henry (@woelkers)
WR Dru Freduci (@Keyg_an)
DE Luke Laraque (@Blix900)
S Sebastian Lovecraft (@Dagon)

Star Spotlight: CB Legs McMillion (@jollyjiggs)
McMillion led all players last season with 39 passes defended and was tied for third in the league with 6 interceptions. Basically, don’t throw the ball their way. Realistically though, teams might not have a choice trying to keep up with the Crash’s high powered offense. Expect big things from McMillion once again this season.

5. Baltimore Hawks BAL
Offensive TPE: 7643 (9th)
Defensive TPE: 9679 (3rd)
QB TPE: 1225 (T-2nd)

S46 Result: 12-4, 1st Place in the NSFC, Championship Game Loss

WR National Treasure (@electrictree)
WR María Teresa de la Rosa (@Baron1898)
LB Federico Americano (@MN_Moosey)
CB Apollo Program (@Modern_Duke)
S Chappy McChapperson (@Charple)

Star Spotlight: QB Wolfie McDummy Jr. (@infinitempg)
With a major trade right before the season started, the Hawks acquired three star players for two draft picks and the aging (and record hunting) Preston Beatz (@DarknessRising). The top earner in the trade was of course McDummy Jr. After falling in the playoffs for three straight seasons, is this the quarterback that can take the Hawks back to the Ultimus?

4. Arizona Outlaws ARI
Offensive TPE: 9049 (2nd)
Defensive TPE: 8649 (9th)
QB TPE: 1106 (6th)

S46 Result: 13-3, 1st Place in the ASFC, Ultimus Champions

New Additions
RB Purdy Mediocre (@KaleSalad)
DT Sewage Joe Fantringham (@BRNXB0MBERS)

Star Spotlight: WR Benji Aguilera (@CROney3)
In their quest to defend their title, Arizona will most likely rely on their vaunted passing attack. Last season, Aguilera was the offensive engine en route to second most receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in the ISFL. There is no reason that they can’t repeat the same kind of production with the Outlaws transforming their offense to rely on the passing game.

3. New Orleans Secondline NOLA
Offensive TPE: 7545 (10th)
Defensive TPE: 10730 (1st)
QB TPE: 1208 (4th)

S46 Result: 4-12, 6th Place in the NSFC

New Additions
RB Will Nuck (@NUCK)
FB Aaron Ford (@Aford9910)
OL McDripsen McDropsen (@Drip)

Star Spotlight: CB Ezra Azazel (@"baz1757")
One of four maxed out players on defense, Azazel will help lead what the Secondline hope to be the top defense in the league. After not recording a single interception in S46 (a problem last season for the whole defense who forced a league low 12 turnovers), Azazel hopes to set pace for New Orleans as their defense should cause a lot of problems for other teams.

2. San Jose SaberCats SJS
Offensive TPE: 8484 (4th)
Defensive TPE: 9057 (5th)
QB TPE: 1260 (1st)

S46 Result: 9-7, 4th Place in the ASFC

New Additions
OL Swantavius Slack (@Swanty)
LB Duilio’s Beard (@RussDrivesTheBus)

Star Spotlight: LB DJ Maclean (@Urq660)
Maclean was everywhere on the field last season for the SaberCats with double digit sacks as well as tackles for loss, 5 forced fumbles and two interceptions. While playing under the shadow of fellow linebacker and former league MVP Cruella de Ville (@Exilizer), Maclean is now primed to take on the lead role for the SaberCats defense. Will they be able to help lead the SaberCats back to the playoffs for the first time since S38?

1. Orange County Otters OCO
Offensive TPE: 9739 (1st)
Defensive TPE: 9869 (2nd)
QB TPE: 1225 (2nd)

S46 Results: 12-4, 2nd Place in the ASFC, Wildcard Loss

6th Place Votes: 14
7th Place Votes: 2

New Additions
RB Reginald Hammerfall (@Fangorn)
WR Diego López de Castilla (@DL14)
DE Doctor Who (@thewhovian)

Star Spotlight: LB John Stark VIII (@UptownCord)
One of three 1000+ TPE linebackers on the Otters, Stark looks to lead the group this season. After a season in which Orange County forced a league high 37 turnovers on defense, they will look for Stark to keep attacking the ball to match his 6 forced fumbles and 1 interception. Regardless of individual play though, Stark’s season (along with the Otters team as a whole) will only be a success with an Ultimus victory.

That’s it for these rankings! Which team will surprise us this season? Which team is overrated? Let me know what you think!
