*S49 TPE-less Mock Draft - omg - 06-28-2024

Welcome to a different take on mock drafting! Today we will be basing our draft entirely upon DSFL player performance and combine results. Many scouts these days like to assign players a “TPE value” rating to determine their true worth. This draft will not take this TPE value into consideration; in fact for the most part I did not even know what the TPE value of many of these prospects were when assembling this! Note that due to the High School Developmental Retention clause of the ISFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, there are 6 players who were previously sponsored by ISFL teams and will be automatically drafted by these teams in the second round. We’re going 4 rounds deep so let’s dig in!

1.01 - COL COL - D’Squarius Green Jr. - TE - @sonicxdoom - NOR NOR

Colorado managed the perfect season in S48, but not in the way most people would want to see. They have holes all over the place, including at Quarterback, where they have nobody on the roster after Preston Beatz’s retirement. So in classic Yeti fashion, they go straight for a tight end in D’Squarius Green Jr. The Yeti have a strong history with elite tight ends, with Mister Hogmally wrapping up a Hall of Fame career with the team while La’Fluke Paris Johnson leading all tight ends in receiving this season. The Yeti know how to utilize multiple tight ends with success, and D’Squarius Green Jr. is one of the best tight end prospects we’ve seen in some time. Green Jr. led the whole DSFL with an 18.5 yards per catch average, and he was quite impressive in the combine, tying for the fastest 40 time of all prospects this season with a 4.34. Colorado might take a lot of heat for going tight end with all their holes, but it won’t be Green Jr.’s fault if this pick is criticized.

1.02 - NYS NYS - Joe Blaze - LB - @jlyles7 - MIN MIN

New York is early in the rebuild process, and while they aren’t as bad off as Colorado, they need young talent in a lot of places. The Silverbacks get off to a strong start by taking the top linebacker prospect in Minnesota’s Joe Blaze. Blaze filled up the stat sheet this season, racking up 114 tackles while leading all prospects with 13 tackles for a loss. He also had 7 sacks and was the only defensive player this season with multiple touchdowns. In addition, Blaze was very impressive at the combine, posting the highest vertical jump of all prospects at 34.1, the 2nd best broad jump with 130.1, the 4th best cone drill at 7.12, and just missed out on the top 40 time with a respectable 4.35. He also had the best Wonderlic amongst linebackers with a score of 35. In fact the only drill he didn’t dominate linebackers in was the bench press, as he only managed 28 reps. Given the entire package, New York is more than willing to bet that the mediocre press results was a fluke more than anything else.

1.03 - AUS AUS - FTBLLCMR4D RUS-KCKR-001 - LB - @8bitd1ck - POR POR

Austin goes out on a limb here and takes a unicorn prospect in FTBLLCMR4D RUS-KCKR-001. RUS-KCKR-001 started the season as Portland’s kicker, but halfway through the season he decided that he would be more impactful for the team as a linebacker. He wasn’t wrong, as the stat line he posted in just 7 games rivaled those of some players who played the position all season long. His 8.5 tackles per game led the entire DSFL, and making an incredible 11 tackles for a loss in just 7 games is just crazy. Add in 5 sacks and RUS-KCKR-001 looks to be a future star in the ISFL. And worse case scenario, if he can’t keep pace at linebacker at the pro level, he’d still be an upgrade at kicker at the very least.

1.04 - BER BER - Alexander Rockstone - CB - @AustinP0027 - DAL DAL

Berlin’s passing offense took the ISFL by storm this season, but they need to focus on rebuilding their defense this season. The Fire Salamanders hone in on top cornerback prospect Alexander Rockstone for their first pick. Rockstone was a star at the combine, posting the best broad jump at 130.5, the 4th best cone drill at 7.12, the 4th best Wonderlic score at 39, and just missed the top 40 time at 4.35. While he only managed 1 interception this season, he showed off his turnover presence with 4 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries instead. He was also second amongst prospects with 18 pass deflections. Berlin’s defense won’t become great overnight, but with Rockstone in tow, it’ll improve sooner rather than later.

1.05 - HON HON - Harvin Marrison - WR - @Chucky - POR POR

Honolulu is in a strange spot right now because they have young players all over the place and are mainly just waiting for them to develop into high level talent. With many picks on the defense the last couple of seasons, the Hahalua go offense to start off this draft, taking one of the top wide receiver prospects in Harvin Marrison. Marrison was dominant on the field this season, catching 76 passes for 1247 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was arguably more impressive at the combine, as he led all prospects with a 4.34 40 time and had the best shuttle drill at 4.00 flat. He was also 2nd in the cone drill with a 7.10 and 3rd in the broad jump with 129.0. Amongst the three top receiver prospects, Marrison really set himself apart from the group with his great combine, and Honolulu is gambling that those measurables show up on the field.

1.06 - SAR SAR - Benny The Jet - WR - @wildcatbandit - MIN MIN

On the other side of the coin, Sarasota goes for another top receiver prospect in Benny The Jet. The Jet was the top receiver prospect on the field this season, grabbing a league leading 97 catches for 1399 yards and 11 touchdowns. If we went by production alone, The Jet would have been the first receiver off the board. Sadly, his combine performance was a little bit lacking compared to the other top receiver prospects of Harvin Marrison and Secret Squirrel. He still managed a near top 40 time at 4.35, and his shuttle drill time of 4.06 was nothing to sneeze at either. We’ve seen time and time again that the combine results don’t always match the on field play, and the Sailfish expect great things from Benny The Jet on the field.

1.07 - OSK OSK - Devin Mace - OL - @Dev0 - KCC KCC

The first ever pick of the Osaka Kaiju is a big one, literally, as they go for the large lad Devin Mace to bolster their offensive line. The Kansas City prospect was one of just five players to gobble up more than 50 pancakes this season, and a strong combine performance where he posted the 2nd best bench press with 36 reps leads him to become the first lineman drafted this season. He’ll slide in nicely into the hole that will presumably be left when the mercenary Gusztáv Farkas takes his leave.

1.08 - YKW YKW - Kim Yeon-Seok - CB - @Crunk - LON LON

Yellowknife has been a team that has struggled to determine whether or not they are good or not. On paper they seem to have enough talent, and they have some good wins against good teams. But they also have some bad losses against bad teams over the last couple of seasons. The best way to build an identity is to solidify the secondary, and the Wraiths do that here by taking London prospect Kim Yeon-Seok. Yeon-Seok was a star on the field this season, leading all prospects with 4 interceptions and 21 pass defenses. Yeon-Seok wasn’t as crisp at the combine, though he still posted an impressive 4.35 40 time. Regardless, Yellowknife is excited to take such a talented cornerback in this spot.

1.09 - SJS SJS - Julian McMorris II - RB - @TubbyTim69 - KCC KCC

This may seem like an odd pick for San Jose here, but hear me out. Without an obvious hole that needs to be filled immediately, the Sabercats decide they want to bolster their depth at wide receiver. After all, Florida Man isn’t getting any younger, and by the time a prospect in this draft reaches their prime, Keanu Calhoun will be feeling the pain of age himself. Of course, with the top 3 receiver prospects no longer available, San Jose throws a curve ball by going with Julian McMorris II. McMorris II may not be quite at the elite level of running back as some other prospects in this draft, but he is without question the best receiving back of the group, and after posting the best cone drill time of 7.01 and the 2nd best shuttle time of 4.02 at the combine, the Sabercats believe he could be a major part of their future as a pass catcher.

1.10 - OSK OSK - Ben Hafkey - CB - @ItsMcLovin - NOR NOR

Osaka is back for their second pick in the draft, and this time they focus on the defensive side of the ball by taking cornerback Ben Hafkey. The Norfolk prospect scared off a few teams with his poor performance at the combine, but Osaka is looking past that and focusing on his performance on the field. 4 interceptions tied for the lead amongst prospects, and 17 pass defenses places him squarely in 3rd. Will he be able to keep up his strong play on the field, or are these poor combine results an early sign of trouble to come? Regardless, it’s a risk the Kaiju are willing to take.

1.11 - ARI AZ - Liggy Jiggy - CB - @Raccoon177 - TIJ TIJ

Meanwhile, Arizona comes in with the opposite approach: taking Tijuana prospect Liggy Jiggy. Jiggy wasn’t the most impressive on the field this season, managing just 1 interception and 8 pass defenses (though part of that production was made up with a pair of forced fumbles and fumble recoveries), but Jiggy put up some promising numbers at the combine, including a strong 4.35 40 time. Landing in Arizona means Jiggy likely won’t be asked to play a huge role on the team out the gate, and that extra time developing in the DSFL for another season or two may become instrumental in the long term.

1.12 - COL COL - Taylor’s BF’s Brother - OL - @STZ - TIJ TIJ

The Yeti are still in need of a quarterback, but you can’t fault them here as they take Taylor’s BF’s Brother to occupy a spot along their offensive line. A young quarterback needs protection, and no one did it better than Brother this season as he was the only player with more than 50 pancakes without giving up a single sack. His combine performance wasn’t as clean as some of the other prospects in this draft, but when you’re putting a rookie under center, you want the players on your line that will do whatever it takes to keep them upright.

1.13 - ARI AZ - Lakin Makin - TE - @MikeWhiskey - LON LON

When you’re a top team and you have multiple first round picks, you can afford a bit of luxury. Arizona takes London prospect Lakin Makin here to finally add a tight end to their roster. Makin was the second best receiving tight end this season, catching 50 passes for 680 yards and 6 touchdowns. Makin also put in a strong combine, and while he didn’t top the charts in any single drill, he was consistently an above average performer across the board. The only real question is if the Outlaws know how to probably utilize a tight end of Makin’s calibur.

1.14 - NOLA NOLA - William Eaton - S - @Amidships - NOR NOR

Fresh off their Ultimus win, New Orleans goes straight back to business. The Secondline were looking to bolster their secondary with a young cornerback, but with the top cornerback prospects already off the board, they pivot over slightly and take the best safety prospect in William Eaton. Eaton swept the combine results, posting the best score amongst safeties in every category. He also showed his physical presence and versatility on the field this season, racking up 6 sacks while also defending 9 passes. Eaton’s versatility plays well with New Orleans philosophy, and he’ll give them options on how to build in the future.

2.01 - COL COL - Secret Squirrel - WR - @iStegosauruz - LON LON

Kicking off the second round, we have our first predetermined pick in Secret Squirrel. Colorado’s sponsor, Squirrel is squarely in the conversation for top 3 receiver in this draft. He caught 75 passes for 1215 yards and 9 touchdowns this season, and he had an impressive combine, posting the 3rd best cone time at 7.11 and 4th best shuttle at 4.05. Whoever ends up as Colorado’s quarterback will love throwing to Squirrel their whole career.

2.02 - NYS NYS - Duke Silverback - RB - @wizard_literal - MIN MIN

Our next sponsor pick, Minnesota’s Duke Silverback is arguably the most well rounded running back in this draft. Silverback was a two-way threat on the field, rushing for over 600 yards on the ground while adding another 400 in the air. He also shone brightly at the combine with a 4.35 40 time, the 3rd best vertical jump at 33.8, and 4th best shuttle at 4.05. He also blew out the other running backs in the bench press with 28 reps. It’s really fitting that the Silverbacks will be putting their future in Silverback.

2.03 - AUS AUS - WW Jatt - DT - @Lumosityfan - NOR NOR

Austin continues to rebuild their defense by taking the first defensive lineman off the board in the hulking WW Jatt. Jatt led all defensive linemen with 9 sacks this season, and he added 50 tackles for good measure. Jatt was also impressive at the combine, putting up the 2nd most reps in the bench press with 36. Jatt will be able to hone his skills behind the talented Oops All-Pro and Carly Rae Jensen for a couple seasons before taking over in Jensen footsteps.

2.04 - BER BER - Connor Craig Jr. Jr. - OL - @Dewalt27 - TIJ TIJ

Berlin’s sponsor pick of Connor Craig Jr. Jr. gives the Fire Salamanders arguably the best offensive line prospect in this whole draft. Craig Jr. Jr. led the DSFL with 67 pancakes this season. What more do you really want out of an offensive lineman than that? Well if that wasn’t enough, Craig Jr. Jr. also led the way in the bench press at the combine, being the only player to hit 37 reps this season. Berlin is very pleased to pick up a talent like this in the second round.

2.05 - HON HON - Baymax - OL - @IceBear32 - LON LON

On the other hand, Honolulu’s sponsor is a total slacker. Baymax was the only high level prospect who skipped out on the combine entirely. Rumor has it he was too busy trying to tan his feet. Baymax was one of just five DSFL players to top 50 pancakes this season, so at least Honolulu can hang their hat on that, but you get the feeling this might be one pick they regret down the line.

2.06 - SAR SAR  - Richard Johnson - OL - @Reedy0rNot - LON LON

With the run on offensive linemen in full effect, Sarasota throws their hat in the ring and takes Richard Johnson with their second pick. Johnson was actually very impressive at the combine, posting the best shuttle and cone drill scores amongst offensive linemen as well as scoring the highest on the Wonderlic. There is a bit of a concern though because he had the lowest bench press of the group, but the Sailfish are confident that strength can be built, but raw instincts and agility are the things to value.

2.07 - CTC CTC - Slam Dunkinson - LB - @bfan8475 - BBB BBB

Cape Town was caught off guard with the sudden retirement of John Stark VIII, leaving them with a hole at linebacker going into next season. Thus, the Crush were ecstatic to see that teams seemed to ignore the position for much of this draft. Slam Dunkinson is a steal for Cape Town here, as he came into the draft with a first round grade and we’re already halfway through the second! Dunkinson led the DSFL with 117 tackles while adding 12 tackles for a loss and 8 sacks. Add in a strong combine with 36 bench press reps and it’s quite the surprise that he fell this far.

2.08 - YKW YKW - Tua Domine - LB - @Yeenoghu - KCC KCC

Another team looking for some linebacker depth, Yellowknife is thrilled to see Tua Domine still available here. Domine also led the DSFL with 117 tackles, though did not bring as much to the table elsewhere. Domine ranked just behind Dunkinson across the board at the combine, so it makes sense that he is also drafted just behind Dunkinson here. Domine was impressive with 36 bench press reps though, and that’s the kind of strength the Wraiths are hoping to get out of him on the field.

2.09 - SJS SJS - Lucas Graves - CB - @Bwestfield - LON LON

For their second pick, San Jose opts to bolster their defense with cornerback Lucas Graves. Graves adds some nice depth to the Sabercats aging secondary, and with some developmental time, Graves can be ready to step in as a starter when Brooks Piggott decides it’s time to hang things up.

2.10 - OSK OSK - Hot Dam - DT - @Painted - LON LON

Osaka gets their sponsor pick here in Hot Dam. Dam had 1 sack this season. He might need some more sponsoring.

2.11 - ARI AZ - Sweet Sweet Ganjasmoke - RB - @BOOM™ - DAL DAL

When you don’t have major holes on your roster, you can just start drafting by raw talent. Sweet Sweet Ganjasmoke is a pure speed runner, and he posted the fastest 40 time in the combine at 4.34. Ganjasmoke represents a nice insurance policy on the off chance that Purdy mediocre decides to test free agency this season, but regardless, the Outlaws will find a way to get his speed on the field.

2.12 - CTC CTC - Daniel Janser - OL - @Daniel Janser - BBB BBB

Walrus Jones can’t play forever, so Cape Town decides it’s time to add his eventual replacement. Daniel Janser showed off his strength at the combine, putting up 36 reps in the bench press. Jones has accumulated 100+ pancakes in 10 straight seasons, so you couldn’t ask for a better mentor for Janser to learn behind.

2.13 - COL COL - Oandon Lolanin - OL - @jacobcarson877 - MIN MIN

Realizing that they need to make sure their quarterback of the future needs to survive, the Yeti decide to double dip into the offensive line pool and add Oandon Lolanin to the squad. While Lolanin had just 32 pancakes this season, he showed a surprising amount of agility at the combine, giving Colorado confidence that he could become a strong anchor for their line going forward.

2.14 - OCO OCO - Deacon Blues - TE - @UptownCord - BBB POR

The last of our sponsor picks (and Orange County’s first pick in general), the Otters add Deacon Blues to the team. The best I can say here is that Blues was the only notable tight end prospect to not give up a sack this season.

3.01 - COL COL - Dexter Morgan - QB - @goodvsevil1275 - LON LON

As we enter the 3rd round, we’ll be more brief in these summaries. Colorado finally pulls the trigger on a quarterback here, taking top prospect Dexter Morgan with the expectation that he’ll be ready for week 1.

3.02 - ARI AZ - Frosty Steele - LB - @jsteele14 - NOR NOR

Arizona picks up a Steele here with Frosty Steele, who could have easily been a borderline first round talent with how strong his combine was.

3.03 - AUS AUS - Ajax Sakarias - WR - @elixir - LON LON

Austin finds a replacement for Deloris Bickerman with Ajax Sakarias here, adding to their pool of young, elite receivers.

3.04 - COL COL - Cederic Theriault - RB - @tcookie - DAL DAL

Colorado gets big value in Cederic Theriault here. Running backs tend to be undervalued in the draft, but even then Theriault could have easily been a second rounder here.

3.05 - HON HON - Nathan Abel - OL - @DeThePyro - DAL DAL

Honolulu immediately has buyer’s remorse on Baymax and drafts his replacement in Nathan Abel here.

3.06 - SAR SAR - Thaal Sinestro - DT - @Arctic - BBB BBB

Thaal Sinestro had a strong season, collecting 8 sacks. Sarasota feels like they got a steal seeing Sinestro fall into the 3rd round.

3.07 - OSK OSK - Serhii Strynadka - S - @REAL rory - KCC KCC

Osaka decides to bolster their secondary by adding Serhii Strynadka. Strynadka will learn quite a lot from the veterans the Kaiju currently employ.

3.08 - YKW YKW - Darius Fasttrack - WR - @Dynamicmlb_42 - DAL DAL

Yellowknife must be concerned about Nick Williams’ regression this season, so they add Darius Fasttrack here to give them some options in the future.

3.09 - SJS SJS - Martavius Spencer - S - @hihihi_62 - LON LON

Martavius Spencer only played in one game this season, but those 6 tackles were enough to convince San Jose to pull the trigger on him here.

3.10 - OSK OSK - Auto Matic - K - @AJW - TIJ TIJ

It’s the late third round, so Osaka is finally comfortable enough to take the top kicker off the board in Auto Matic, who led the DSFL with an 83.3% field goal percentage.

3.11 - ARI AZ - Chris Receiverston - WR - @avocago_65 - NOR NOR

Arizona adds more depth to their wide receiver room with Chris Receiverston.

3.12 - CTC CTC - Bazooka Nuttingham - RB - @Gopher a beer - TIJ TIJ

If any team knows how to run the football, it’s Cape Town. Bazooka Nuttingham stands to learn quite a lot from the talent and staff the Crash have on their side.

3.13 - BAL BAL - Katya Zamolodchikova - QB - @fnordypsyduck - POR POR

Wolfie McDummy Jr. may have had his best season as a pro. So Baltimore drafts his future replacement in Katya Zamolodchikova to makes sure he keeps it up.

3.14 - NOLA NOLA - Kevin Finnerty - TE - @ReverendOReily - LON LON

New Orleans is grateful that Kevin Finnerty fell to them and will gladly pickup the best blocking tight end in the draft at the end of the third round.

4.01 - COL COL - Tony Chazz - DT - @Benson - DAL DAL

Tony Chazz suffered a bit from a bad combine performance, although he did post the 3rd highest Wonderlic score. Still Colorado is more than happy to snatch him up here in the 4th round.

4.02 - NYS NYS - Klaus Reinhardt - @Middy - OL - KCC KCC

New York is happy to add talent to the offensive line this late in the draft. Klaus Reinhardt definitely slipped thanks to giving up 6 sacks this season, but there’s definitely room for improvement here.

4.03 - AUS AUS - William Metzler - K/P - @dylanjj37 - DAL DAL

Metzler is a weird case as he did not kick for Dallas this season, only punted. This would scare some teams away, but Austin was enamored with his combine performance and decides to pull the trigger.

4.04 - BER BER - Billdozer Dauterive - LB - @Kyamprac - NOR NOR

While other teams are off taking project players and kickers, Berlin notices that there’s still talent brewing at linebacker and snags Billdozer Dauterive before someone else can.

4.05 - HON HON - Jonah Wallis - CB - @QuirkyTurtle - KCC KCC

Honolulu goes secondary here and takes Jonah Wallis. They feel like they got a steal given Jonah outperformed Lucas Graves on the field this season and he was taken way back in the second.

4.06 - SAR SAR - Kool Kyle - RB - @Jaywe88 - MIN MIN

Kool Kyle falls to Sarasota here. His combine results did him no favors.

4.07 - BAL BAL - Zimm Triumph - S - @bytes - DAL DAL

Baltimore grabs Zimm Triumph here to add to their secondary.

4.08 - YKW YKW - Leandro Goncalves - LB - @leandrofg - POR POR

Yellowknife bolsters their linebacker room with Leandro Goncalves.

4.09 - SJS SJS - Marshall von Hildebrand - K/P - @nunccoepi - KCC KCC

San Jose takes Marshall von Hildebrand here, who had the longest field goal in the DSFL this season at 55 yards.

4.10 - OCO OCO - Zack Vega Jr. - QB - @WALDO - DAL DAL

Orange County takes the last quarterback prospect in Zack Vega Jr. here. Lloyd Bannings isn’t going anywhere, but it’s never too early to develop another arm.

4.11 - OCO OCO - Joe Brewer - WR - @EBOT0907 - BBB BBB

And they follow it up with a receiver in Joe Brewer to develop with him.

4.12 - CTC CTC - Tim Robinson - K/P - @Yahtzee - MIN MIN

Cape Town grabs the last player to attend the combine here in Tim Robinson.

4.13 - BAL BAL - Makoa Mahl’ai Jr. - OL - @King Jellyfish - MIN MIN

Baltimore figures if you’re gonna take a blind stab at unknown talent, do it at a position where often just being a body is good enough. Makoa Mahl’ai Jr. fits that role.

4.14 - NOLA NOLA - Walter Melon - CB - @halanv3ntur3 - POR POR

Meanwhile New Orleans figures grab someone with a fun name in Walter Melon!

RE: S49 TPE-less Mock Draft - jlyles7 - 06-29-2024

Awesome mock draft, love how you did something a little different and used combine results. Really cool

Thank you! Looking at the TPE levels now, there were definitely a few spots where I would change some things, but it's a fun exercise doing something different. It definitely helped that most of the 50ish TPE inactives didn't have combine results so I could weed most of them off my list.
