*Prospect Bowl Day 2 Set to Premier at 8PM EST Tonight - Daileyj6 - 07-06-2024

As we near day two of the Prospect Bowl, it’s time to give you an inside look as to our expectations going into the games. We will give you a look at the energy in the locker room as well as what we are expecting from some of your favorite S50 prospects. The Baja Barracudas are 1-1 going into this game and an undefeated performance today would push them up to first, while the Aztecs are 2-0 and are looking to hold on to their lead. The 0-2 Guardians left little to be desired on the tape from day one, but a few stars on the team could spark some excitement in the fanbase.

 Barracudas
The Baja Barracudas left a lot on the field in their first game of say one, allowing the Aztecs to run away with the game in the second half. Even with a stellar performance from their defensive line, especially from Thurman Waters, they couldn’t hold back the high-powered Aztec offense. One player to keep an eye on is JC Tomlinson, who recorded 9 tackles, allowing around 1.4 yards per carry on those tackles. Hopefully he can get in the sack column and beat expectations today. We are also hoping for a big day from DE Jonathan Dailey, who recorded a sack game one and a TFL in game two. Not a terrible performance but underwhelming to say the least. If he can play up to expectations and Thurman Waters can continue to play at a high level, we may see one of the best defensive line performances in prospect bowl history.

Looking at their secondary, they must be able to stop the pass. They simply didn’t meet expectations. The talent is present, they have some of the biggest talent in the upcoming draft at safety and corner, they just looked a little slower than usual. We asked DE Jonathan Dailey what his thoughts were coming in, and this was his response:

“These guys are better than the stat sheet showed. Big time stops from the secondary in game two are what secured the win for us. Game isn’t played on paper.”

While there is some truth to what he said, it would be nice to see more passes broken up and intercepted at the bowl tonight from their secondary.

The glaring issue going into day two for the Cudas, however, is the lack of offense. RB Dalinar Summers is a hidden talent, one of three brothers competing for a spot in the draft. He is definitely a feature back moving forward with his lightning quick teammate Redgrave, making them the ultimate thunder and lightning combo. The woes at QB seem to be what’s holding this offense back. Between the two games on day one, the Barracudas averaged around 40% completion percentage. That is not going to win football games, and I think they are hoping for a better performance from their two prospect QBs going into day two. If they want to convert on 3rd down and stop the “3 and out” drives, QB play simply must improve.

Aztecs
Now looking at the Aztecs. It’s hard to find areas to improve on an undefeated team. It all starts with Jack Cannon. The prospect had an amazing day, averaging about 60% completions with a 5 touchdown 1 interception ratio on the day. It helps when you have an offensive line that averages more pancakes than they do pressures (insane right?). One area they can improve, however, is the pass rush. Between the two games, they were only able to sack the quarterback once. Their run defense is stout but if the opposing QBs get their acts together today, this could expose a weak pass rush that was previously masked behind the poor QB performances.

Guardians
Finally it’s time to dissect what caused the Guardians to fall to 0-2 after day one of the prospect bowl. Their passing in game one wasn’t good enough. They had a combined higher completion percentage than the Cudas, but the turnovers were abysmal. Zero touchdowns with two interceptions. Challah was able to turn this around in game two, throwing a touchdown pass, but that still brings their totals on the day to 1 TD and 2 INTs. That’s unacceptable play from two very talented quarterbacks. The running game wasn’t anything to be proud of either, lead back averaging 5.6 in game one but only 2.5 per carry in game 2. Let’s hope they can make that game one performance happen twice today!

Now onto the defensive side of the ball. One sack on the day isn’t going to win games, but I’ll tell you what will. Turnovers, and that’s exactly what their gameplan revolves around. Bachira (S) was able to secure a pick 6 in game two, resulting in more points scored than his entire offense by halftime. CB Bowman was also able to secure a pair of interceptions, which had the offense not faltered, could have won them the game! Let’s hope we see a similar performance from the pair of defensive backs in the games today.

Summary
For those of you who don’t want to read it all, the Baja Barracudas need a better QB performance and to play tighter defense in the secondary. If DE Jonathan Dailey and DE JC Tomlinson can meet or exceed expectations today, the three-man defensive line will set some game records. The Aztecs need to continue their efforts on both offense and defense but can improve at getting to the quarterback. If the Guardians and Cudas quarterbacks come out slinging today, they will need a solid pass rush that just wasn’t there on day one. The Guardians completely fell apart offensively. There was no rhythm, no aggression, it was like they didn’t want to be there. They need the QB’s to step up and stop turning the ball over and they need the offensive line to make holes for the run game to get started early. The defensive line needs to improve across the board. Pressures, sacks, stops, tackles for loss, and fumbles. This is what they need to get to the next level to support their secondary, who had amazing performances.
See you at the game!
