*oh, the places you'll go! - br0_0ker - 07-17-2024

The relocation of Chicago to Osaka birthed the first ISFL team in Asia (and first win, congrats!) and got me thinking: with a team now on nearly every continent in the world, which ISFL team is going to end up travelling the most in S49?

  1. ARI KPHX Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport ARI
  2. AUS KAUS Austin-Bergstrom International Airport AUS
  3. BER EDDB Berlin Brandenburg Airport BER
  4. BAL KBWI Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport BAL
  5. COL KDEN Denver International Airport COL
  6. CTC FACT Cape Town International Airport CTC
  7. HON PHNL Daniel K. Inouye International Airport HON
  8. NOLA KMSY Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport NOLA
  9. NYS KJFK John F. Kennedy International Airport NYS
  10. OCO KSNA John Wayne Airport OCO
  11. OSK RJBB Kansai International Airport OSK
  12. SJS KSJC San Jose Mineta International Airport SJS
  13. SAR KSRQ Sarasota Bradenton International Airport SAR
  14. YKW CYZF Yellowknife Airport YKW

  • I took the nearest international airport for each team, went over to https://airplanemanager.com/flight-calculator and ran through each team's schedule to see who was spending the most time in the air over the course of a season and who was relaxing at home on the couch the most during the week.
  • I assumed all flights were direct.
  • I chose Heavy Jet in the drop-down selection, without really knowing what the classification for a Boeing 737-800 (common sports teams charter) would be, but also assuming that it would be heavier than anything lighter than a Super Mid. Then considering the full staff and personnel each individually probably weigh more than the average jet passenger, it felt like a safe assumption to go Heavy Jet.
  • In the case of Yellowknife, my mighty overlord Google assured my Yellowknife Airport is an international airport, but when I checked their flight schedule, did not see any flights to or from the United States, which would make travelling to play ISFL teams difficult. Mostly because I didn't want to do the legwork of calculating connecting flights, let's assume Yellowknife Airport charters international flights for their local sports team.
  • I didn't add any distance or time for home games (obviously) and doubled each team's total since they would need to return home (obviously).
  • I used Seasonal Wind, which will change totals very slightly for flight time, since I doubled a single direction rather than flipping the destinations and adding the totals.
  • Lastly, the distances are in nautical miles because that's how they measure travel via boat or plane (or so I was told). A nautical mile is a little bit more than a regular mile, by roughly 1.15 times, and much more than a kilometer (for you metric system lovers), by roughly 1.85 times.

Let's check it out!

14. SJS San Jose Sabercats SJS

These lazy cats lead the litter of ISFL teams in least distance travelled in S49. Topping out at a whopping total of 23,444 NM, San Jose starts and ends the season at home and has an early 3-game home stretch. Immediately after is a 3-game away stretch, but the first is to the only other California team, Orange County. They split their international games 1:1 home/away and they only have to travel to the east coast twice, once for a matchup against Baltimore and later for a showdown versus New York. The Sabercats will be spending just 55 hours in the air, a little less than 3.5 hours each way per away game flight this season.
Longest Trip: New York
Shortest Trip: Orange County

13. OCO Orange County Otters OCO

Boy, is California laaaaazy. Coming in with the second least distance travelled in S49 is Orange County, at 28,880 NM. Orange County actually splits their international games at 1:1 home/away games, but finishes the season with a comfortable 3 out of 4 games at home, with their only away game a short 2.5 hour flight to Austin. While their opener is in-state and seemingly their shortest trip on the schedule, their week 10 matchup against Arizona is actually 4 NM shorter, charting at just 46 minutes in the air. In all, the Otters will spend a little under 71 hours in air this season, nearly a full hour more each way per away game flight than their California brethren.
Longest Trip: Osaka
Shortest Trip: Arizona

12. AUS Austin Copperheads AUS
Not far away in the 12th position in Austin, travelling 29,564 NM this season. Unlike the previous 2 teams, Austin will have an additional away game out-of-country, and while they have to endure a grueling 10-hour flight to Berlin, they only have one other trip exceeding 5 hours on their schedule, and have over half their away games approaching the 3 hour length or shorter. Austin benefits from being centrally located to their conference opponents, not having to make numerous coast-to-coast flights but rather a series of shorter ones. Ultimately the difference between #12 and #13 in flight time is only about 11 minutes, with the Copperheads reenacting Snakes on a Plane for just 71 hours on the season.
Longest Trip: Berlin
Shortest Trip: New Orleans

11. NYS New York Silverbacks NYS
New York comes in just outside the top 10, our first team to crest the 30,000 NM mark at 30,414 NM travelled. New York has an interesting schedule, with their away games going in a series of 4 back-to-back weeks, and would make for an interesting case of staying out west each week when you look at the matchups. Weeks 1 and 2 are Colorado and Austin, only a little over 1.5 hours by plane apart. Weeks 5 and 6 are Orange County and San Jose, both California teams; weeks 10 and 11 are New Orleans and Saratoga, both teams in the south and separated by only a little over a 1 hour flight. Wrapping up the season at Arizona and Honolulu before flying home would cut their travel time nearly in half, and would give them the #1 least travelled spot by nearly 8,000 NM. Unfortunately, the Silverbacks will likely make every return trip and clock in at 78.96 hours in the air this season, much to their players' chagrin.
Longest Trip: Honolulu
Shortest Trip: Sarasota

10. NOLA New Orleans Secondline NOLA
Our first top 10 finisher, the Orleans edges out the York in the battle of New by travelling 33,858 NM this season. New Orleans is another team that will split their international matchups 1:1 home/away, and half of their away games are to the west coast, if you include Honolulu. They start their season alternating home and away for the first 7 games before a nice little 3-game home stretch mid-season. Totaling in at 80.70 hours in flight, the Secondline will spend just over 5 hours each way while travelling to away games this season.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: Austin

9. ARI Arizona Outlaws ARI
Arizona is the next team on the list, just 706 NM more than the #10 spot with 34,564 NM travelled. Arizona is the second team to have 2 games abroad this season, once to Berlin and later to Osaka. Luckily their games against Cape Town and Yellowknife are at home or they would have found themselves much furth down the list. The Outlaws will spend about 85 hours in the sky, for an average of 5 hours and 17 minutes of airtime one way each game.
Longest Trip: Osaka
Shortest Trip: Orange County

8. BAL Baltimore Hawks BAL
Next is a big jump up to Baltimore at 43,104 NM. Baltimore is one of 3 teams that share a conference with, and must travel to, each of the 4 international teams, although their only matchup with a west coast team is at home in Baltimore on the east coast. Baltimore starts the season with 2 home games, but finishes with 2 on the road, and will have the shortest trip of the season to New York at just 26 minutes long. The Hawks will spend just a little under 104 hours in the air this season, roughly 13 hours per game.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: New York

7. COL Colorado Yeti COL
Colorado does not have to leave the country until week 10 when they face Berlin, but will finish half their remaining games abroad. They will end up travelling 46,560 NM, nearly 10% more than the number 8 team. The Yeti never have a home or away stretch longer than 2 games, and most of their schedule seems to be alternating east/west. They will start the season at home but finish on the road, and split their 4 international conference matchups home/away. The Yeti will total a little under 111 hours in the air this season, just under 7 hours one way per game.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: Austin

6. YKW Yellowknife Wraiths YKW
Yellowknife is the first of the international teams to rank on the list and also the first team overall to crest the 50,000 NM mark, travelling a total of 53,074 NM. During a grueling 3-game away stretch they'll head to Cape Town then Berlin, while later in the season they will travel out west to Honolulu and Osaka as well. The Wraith's total airtime this season will run about 126 hours, a little under 8 hours per way per game.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: Colorado

5. SAR Sarasota Sailfish SAR
Now into our top 5, Sarasota just beat out Yellowknife with 56,290 NM travelled this season. Sarasota starts the season with back-to-back away international games, then again in week 4 to Cape Town. Oh and just for good measure throw in weeks 7 and 8 for back-to-back Honolulu/Osaka trip, similar to Yellowknife (but without the benefit of a home game breather in-between). Sarasota will travel the most of any team in the continental United States, a feat worthy of recognition. In all, Sarasota will have a little under 135 hours in the air this season, about 8.5 hours each way per game.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: Baltimore

4. HON Honolulu Hahalua HON
Surely you didn't look at the map at the beginning of the article and think Honolulu was going to end up number one? Not even close, Honolulu was barely over 50% of number 1. But still, travelling 62,108 NM is no laughing matter, good for the most of any team in the United States this season. Honolulu lays claim to the season's longest trip, clocking in at 36 minutes shy of a full day in the sky. The Hahalua will end the season with a trip across the country to Sarasota, then across the Atlantic to Berlin. In total, they will travel for a bit under 142 hours, or just under 18 hours per game.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: San Jose

3. BER Berlin Salamanders BER
Berlin will have to travel to the States for 5 of their away matchups, while also heading to Osaka, Cape Town and Yellowknife once apiece, putting them at a total of 68,578 NM on the season. Like Honolulu, this is well short of the number 1 spot by nearly the same margin, despite the illusion of the map. Berlin's trips aren't actually very long either; of the top 10 teams, Berlin's longest flight will be the shortest. The Salamanders end up just under 169 hours in the air, over 10.5 hours each way per game.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: Yellowknife

2. OSK Osaka Kaiju OSK
With nearly 20% more distance travelled than the number 3 spot, Osaka will travel a total of 81,128 NM this season, good for over 10,000 NM a game. Two trips to the east coast, a trip to New Orleans, and a trip to each of Yellowknife, Cape Town, and Berlin add up to a lot of miles in the air. Thankfully for Osaka they get a relaxing 5-game home stretch from weeks 10-14, so perhaps the travel won't wear on them so much late in the season. In total the Kaiju end up taking a little over 188 hours of flight, just under 12 hours each way per game.
Longest Trip: Cape Town
Shortest Trip: Yellowknife

And that leaves...

1. CTC Cape Town Crash CTC

You probably weren't tricked into thinking Honolulu would be here by the map I put at the beginning of the article, but probably were thinking either Berlin or Osaka stood a shot at the number 1 slot (unless you were counting the longest trip of each team as you read along). No, by nearly 50% more than the number 2 team, Cape Town will be travelling a whopping 120,602 NM this season, on average more than 15,000 NM per away game. The added distance of the curvature of the Earth is really felt when the teams start travelling across the equator; where Osaka will have 5 trips over 5,000 NM long this season, ALL of Cape Town's away games will be over 5,000 NM, and half their games are longer than Osaka's longest away trip which, coincidentally, is to Cape Town... which Cape Town will reciprocate week 1 given they share a conference. The Crash will spend just under 300 hours in the air this season, over 37 hours a week round-trip, or the equivalent of working a near full-time job in the United States.
Longest Trip: San Jose
Shortest Trip: Berlin

Conclusion

In total, ISFL teams will fly nearly 33 times around the Earth this season. They will spend the equivalent of over 71 days in an aircraft, and if you summed all the starters' collective experience, together they would experience a little under 4.5 years flying to away games this season. The most travelled team will end up travelling nearly 6 times longer than the least travelled team and nearly 70,000 more nautical miles (3 times around the Earth). Congratulations, Cape Town!

As always, thanks for making it to the end. Cheers.
