JDC’s Week 1 Power Rankings

Welcome to the Season 50, Week 1 Power Rankings! These rankings are mine and mine alone which are based on statistics, analytics, and vibes.

14. Orange County Otters (0-1) OCO

Week 1 result: Loss to Colorado Yeti, 6-57

The Orange County Otters had a rough Season 50 opener against the Colorado Yeti. Their only scores came from kicker, King Leonidas I, who made two short field goals. Quarterback Lloyd Bannings was sacked five times and threw two interceptions in this game. The offensive line play in this game was insufficient to protect their quarterback and get a good pass and run game going. The Otters also suffered from 14 penalties in this game, totalling 113 penalty yards. There was no real bright spot in this game for Orange County, which results them at the bottom of these rankings.

Next opponent: @ Honolulu Hahalua (1-0)

13. Berlin Fire Salamanders (0-1) BER

Week 1 result: Loss to Cape Town Crash, 12-32

Another team who failed to impress in week 1 was the Berlin Fire Salamanders. Their quarterback, Tuna TurnDaBallOva, did live up to the name and threw one interception and zero touchdowns. In fact, no one on this offense reached the end zone as newly acquired Booter McGavin scored four field goals for Berlin’s only points. Running back Willie Swaggert did show signs of life as he ran for 101 yards on 18 attempts.

Next opponent: @ San Jose Sabercats (1-0)

12. Arizona Outlaws (0-1) ARI

Week 1 result: Loss to Austin Copperheads, 13-15

Furthermore, we have another team on this list with poor quarterback play. The Arizona Outlaws could not get much going offensively against the Copperheads although they did find the end zone once, courtesy of running back Bertie Mannering-Phipps. The run game between BMP and Purdy Mediocre was the only bright spot in this offense. The Outlaws defense however were able to keep this game close and held Austin to only 15 points. The defense earned three sacks, three forced fumbles, and five pass deflections but it was not enough to overcome the offense’s shortcomings.

Next opponent: @ New Orleans Secondline (0-1)

11. Baltimore Hawks (0-1) BAL

Week 1 result: Loss to Yellowknife Wraiths, 17-27

Baltimore had a difficult time slowing Yellowknife down in this first game. S41 quarterback, Wolfie McDummy Jr put up 273 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Season 49 MVP, Anakin Skywalker, posted a respectable statline with 59 yards and a touchdown but the Hawks defense could not stop the Wraith offense. Anakin will have to take over games and the defense will need to improve on getting stops if Baltimore wants to have a winning season.

Next opponent: @ Sarasota Sailfish (1-0)

10. New Orleans Secondline (0-1) NOLA

Week 1 result: Loss to San Jose Sabercats, 21-31

The back-to-back champions struggled in their week one game as they try to threepeat in the ISFL. San Jose did a great job controlling the clock as they outplayed the Second Line in time of possession 35:16 to 24:44. The Second Line could not stop the ground game of San Jose as the Sabercats ran for four touchdowns against New Orleans. NOLA did have some bright spots with Passerelli going for 117 yards and a touchdown. Regression does seem to be hitting star running back Kyle Crane, however. Crane ran for 58 yards on 9 attempts.

Next opponent: vs. Arizona Outlaws (0-1)

9. Austin Copperheads (1-0) AUS

Week 1 result: Win against Arizona Outlaws, 15-13

The Austin Copperheads went on the road and took out the Arizona Outlaws in this week one matchup. They were not very productive on the ground game as five players combined only for 81 yards. Quarterback Jay Cue III did just enough to put his team over the edge as he found second year sensation, Seer Ial in the end zone who also posted 103 receiving yards. Not the prettiest win, but in this league, wins are very hard to come by.

Next opponent: @ New York Silverbacks (0-1)

8. New York Silverbacks (0-1) NYS

Week 1 result: Loss to Honolulu Hahalua, 20-31

The highlight of this game came from star kicker, Wing Wang, who nailed a 59 yarder in the third quarter. However, the New York Silverbacks just came up flat against the Hahalua in the season debut. Quarterback Elijah Dyson was uninspiring, throwing for 203 yards, 1 touchdown, and 47% completion. The defense could not stop the Honolulu ground game as David and McRobinson from Honolulu posted three touchdowns. New York does have pieces in place to make noise this season, such as Feet-Lover Sr, but we shall see how they continue to perform.

Next opponent: vs. Austin Copperheads (1-0)

7. Osaka Kaiju (0-1) OSK

Week 1 result: Loss to Sarasota Sailfish, 21-22

In a heartbreaking loss for the first game of the season, the Osaka Kaiju blew it in the fourth quarter. After three quarters, Osaka was leading 21-10 but the Sailfish mustered 12 points to sneak out the win. Osaka was unable to prevent Zigzag Zipstep and Ace Anderson from finding the end zone in the fourth quarter which resulted in the loss. Personally, I still expect great things from Osaka this season as the quarterback, running backs, and receivers are in place to perform well. Their next matchup against Cape Town may be another big test though.

Next opponent: vs. Cape Town Crash (1-0)

6. Sarasota Sailfish (1-0) SAR

Week 1 result: Win against Osaka Kaiju, 22-21

Going back to the aforementioned power rank entry, the Sailfish snuck out a win against the Kaiju at home. Ace Anderson and Zigzag Zipstep became heroes for fans in Sarasota, Florida as they both found the end zone in the fourth quarter. Anderson specifically showed why he is still regarded as one of league’s top running backs as he made a lot of noise on the ground and in the air, courtesy of quarterback, Bugs. This high-powered offense will be one to watch in Season 50.

Next opponent: Baltimore Hawks (0-1)

5. Yellowknife Wraiths (1-0) YKW

Week 1 result: Win against Baltimore Hawks, 27-17

An all-around great display in week 1 by the Yellowknife Wraiths as they defeated Baltimore on the road. They have a great one-two punch in the running back room with Animal Blundetto and Lane Wilson as they combined for 116 rushing yards and a touchdown. This will be a great dynamic duo to watch in Season 50. The defense also looked great as they picked off Baltimore twice and got to the QB four times. Captain Luke Hunter will be a name to follow as we progress through the season.

Next opponent: Colorado Yeti (1-0)

4. Honolulu Hahalua (1-0) HON

Week 1 result: Win against New York Silverbacks, 31-20

Another team who won the game in the fourth quarter was the Honolulu Hahalua. After suffering from a 59 yard Wing Wang field goal, the Hahalua were not rattled. Stetson David and Lenard McRobinson both ran into the end zone to give Honolulu their first win in the new season. The run game was incredible with three rushing touchdowns and even a receiving touchdown by running back, Fig Newton. The defense also held the Silverbacks off their back and gave the offense the chance they needed to win.

Next opponent: vs. Orange County Otters (0-1)

3. Cape Town Crash (1-0) CTC

Week 1 result: Win against Berlin Fire Salamanders, 32-12

Thor put the hammer down in this game as he threw for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns with a 116.7 passer rating. Cape Town should be able to lean on their great passing game in season 50 but also have a great running back crew with Ayame and Henry. The defense played great against Berlin and held them to 3/13 on third down. On the flip side, Cape Town may also need to work on improving their third down efficiency as well, as they were held to 2/11 on third downs. Regardless, with the spectacular offensive play, Cape Town was able to easily get it done on the road against Berlin.

Next opponent: @ Osaka Kaiju (0-1)

2. San Jose Sabercats (1-0) SJS

Week 1 result: Win against New Orleans Secondline, 31-21

If you are not a Kit Fister, you are now. Week one for the San Jose Sabercats was the running show as Fisto ran for 120 yards and 1 touchdown. He also got 84 receiving yards from 4 receptions in this game. And even more impressive is Maple Dogwood running for 73 yards and 3 touchdowns. If you’re an ISFL GM and you set all three defense options to Run against San Jose, you’re still going to get ran over by these two.

Next opponent: @ Berlin Fire Salamanders (0-1)

1. Colorado Yeti (1-0) COL

Week 1 result: Win against Orange County Otters, 57-6

I don’t think many ISFL experts or pundits had this on their bingo card. The Yeti put a stomping on the Otters in week one and beat them by 51 points. After having zero touchdowns and three interceptions in their last season 49 game, Katya Zamolodchikova flipped the script and threw for 258 yards, 4 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 124.7. Talk about an improvement! Guile and McMorris II found the end zone twice. Rockstone and Squirrel found the end zone once for the Yeti. This was a masterclass by the Colorado Yeti. Yes, you read that correctly. This was a masterclass by the Colorado Yeti. And I have to mention OhioRizzler being the defensive MVP with 10 tackles, 6 pass deflections, 2 interceptions, and 1 touchdown. This is the kind of performance Colorado fans have been waiting for. Some are still skeptical that the performance may have been part of Orange County’s skill level but Colorado has made a huge statement in week 1 and surely, the league will be watching.

Next opponent: @ Yellowknife Wraiths (1-0)
