Re-grading the season 3 draft

Round 1

With the season 3 officially in the wraps, let's look back to the beginning of the season, and regrade all the draft picks from the season 3 draft.

Here’s the grades for the first round:

#1: Colorado Yeti - Antonio Sandoval, OT, Notre Dame

Season 3 stats: 42 pancakes, 5 sacks allowed

The Yeti came into the draft needing serious help, and so they traded up to grab Sandoval, who they believe would help anchor their line for the next decade. And so far, he has done that job pretty well. He has only allowed 5 sacks, and helped the Yeti OL go from absolutely horrid to poor, with the Yeti OL allowing 11 less sacks this season compared to season 2. Unfortunately, because of the Noble scandal, he was stuck protecting a MUCH worse QB than he expected, but still, Sandoval’s rookie campaign was promising. Its still left to be seen if he stays as a OL, but for now, the Yeti made a great pick.

Grade: A

#2: Arizona Outlaws - Godfrey King, DT, Temple

Season 3 stats: 49 sacks, 3 TFLs, 22 sacks.

What can I really say? King was a consensus top 3 pick, and he played exceptionally well throughout the season. 22 sacks ranked him top 5 overall in sacks and he was a big part of the dominant Outlaws pass rush. Easy home run pick.

Grade: A+

#3: Yellowknife Wraiths - Brice Boggs, LB -> CB, Florida

Season 3 stats: 68 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 PD

Bogg’s had a fine rookie season, and has proved himself to be a valuable member of his team. Unfortunately for the Wraiths, that team is the Colorado Yeti, who they traded along with 2 worthless picks for a guy who ditched them for the Legion, and 2 seconds in a draft where honestly only the first round looks promising. It was a move made to try and push the Wraiths to the next level, but unfortunately they managed to play poorly enough to miss out on the playoffs completely, making the trade horrible in hindsight. Plus, if the Wraiths had kept Boggs, perhaps they would have not needed to make Linebacker Kevin Cushing move to CB. In the end, the pick itself was fine, but what they did with it was bad. As for the Yeti, they got a building block of their defense for their long rebuild after the loss of Logan Noble.

Grade: A

#4: San Jose Sabercats - Benson Bayley, CB, LSU

Season 3 stats: 53 tackles, 2 ints, 16 PDs

San Jose needed secondary help, and they got it with Bayley. The addition of Bayley helped the San Jose defense greatly, as they were able to rise from being a terrible defense. The 1-2 CB punch of Canton and Bayley was fantastic all season long, and although the Sabercats did get some hard breaks, they have a very promising future. Overall a very solid pick.

Grade: B+

#5: San Jose Sabercats - Iyah Blewitt, K/P, Queens

Season 3 stats: 25/31 FGM/FGA(80.6%), 3/3 from 50+, 5601 yards punting, 46.7 average, 20 inside 20.

When drafting, its always useful to remember what happened to the Buccaneers. Never draft a kicker or punter too high. This is not Blewitt’s fault. He played very well for a rookie special teamer, and actually led the league in punting yards, second in punts inside the 20, and had the most made kicks from past 50 yards. The big problem with this pick is that even though Blewitt played great as a rookie kicker and punter, was he really worth being picked over players like Julian O’Sullivan, Ricardo Sandoval, or Trey Willie? I do understand why the Sabercats pulled the trigger on Blewitt, as they did need a K/P and their next pick was in the 3rd round, but they could have probably easily gotten a K/P from a trade for cheap, and it's very hard to justify the value of a first round kicker. In the end, it was a fine pick player wise, but not a good one value wise.

Grade: C

#6: Julian O'Sullivan, LB, Georgetown

Season 3 stats: 97 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 FF, 7 sacks, 3 ints, 10 Pass deflections, 1 defensive TD.

One of the season 3 defensive Rookie of the Year front runners. This was a fantastic pick by the Otters, as Sullivan was fantastic all of season 3, and solidified himself as one of the best one of the best LBs in the league, full stop. There really isnt anything bad to say here. This was one of the best picks in the draft.

Grade: A+

#7: Baltimore Hawks - Ricardo Sandoval, DT, San Diego State

Season 3 stats: 61 tackles, 1 TFL, 12 sacks

And here goes the other Sandoval brother. Sandoval was a mainstay on the D-Line standouts all season, and was a big part of Hawks improved pass rush. He was top 5 in sacks for a DT, and completely outplayed Mark Ramiro in the NSFC Championship game. He has become an important part of the Hawks defense, and will be for many more seasons. A great pick by the Hawks.

Grade: A

#8: Arizona Outlaws - Franklin Harris Jr, CB, LSU

Season 3 stats: 49 tackles, 8 interceptions, 21 passes defended

Another Defensive rookie of the year front runner. Harris was the league leader in ints, and was top 3 in passes defended. Some may say that Harris Jr benefitted from the Outlaws monstrous pass rush, but his play has spoken for himself. Phillipe Carter and Harris Jr were the best 1-2 CB combo in the league by every statistic, and Harris Jr was fantastic in the Ultimus, picking off Hawks QB Scrub Kyubee 2 times in one of the most impressive games from a cornerback ever. Another home run pick. It's easy to see how the Outlaws keep their dynasty chugging, with 2 home run picks in the first round.

Grade: A+

*Regrading the Season 3 draft - White Cornerback - 10-26-2017

To be fair it's not like we had a choice in trading Boggs.

These recaps should at least span to pick #9. I would like to see a grade on that pick as well as colorful commentary.
