Defensive Line Standouts – Week 5

Welcome to week 5 of our Season 4 Defensive Line Standouts. I have to be honest, I’m loving the new look Otters. Every year, the league knows the Otters offense will be dynamite, but their defense would be atrocious. They were like the Saints of every year from 2005-2016. But now, with some actual talent outside of Tomlinson on the line, they look to truly be a contender for the throne. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Wraiths and Liberty. While many expected the Wraiths to take a step back, the opposite can be said for the Liberty, but as of week 5, we’ve seen little improvement as they sit comfortably at the bottom of our standings here. While the Wraiths already have the talent in house to take that step, the Liberty may still be a season away. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!

Defensive End Top Performers

G. Wright Jr. OCO ($$) 7 TCK, 4 TFL
Wright is making his second appearance on our list this week and did so by coming through in a big way. His 7 tackles and 4 tackles for loss is the highest scoring performance by a defensive lineman since week 2, and is tied for the highest on the season. After this week, Wright is now tied for first in the NSFL with 8 tackles for loss on the season. It’s nice to see a facet of their game (the defense) improve so much from last year, as they attempt to unseat the Outlaws from their ASFC (and NSFL) throne. The Otters are headed to Colorado next week to face a winless Yeti team.

B. Blade ARI ($$) 6 TCK, 3 TFL
His second time making our list this season, this marks the second time in a row he has finished the week with 12 points. Although he wasn’t able to get to the quarterback, his 6 tackles and 3 tackles for loss made it a tough day on the ground for the Hawks. Blade is now fifth among defensive linemen with 5 tackles for loss on the season. The Outlaws will be headed up north to Yellowknife next week in an attempt to avenge their first loss of the season.

M. Ramrio PHI ($) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
I was hoping this name would pop up soon. During season 2 and season 3, Ramrio was one of the top defensive tackles in the league, so expectations were high for this season. Unfortunately, it looks like there was a slight adjustment period with him moving to defensive end, and he had a relatively quiet first quarter of the season. His first time on our list was a good one though, as he finished the week with 4 tackles and 1 sack. Next week he’ll look to continue his success at defensive end against a SaberCats squad that has allowed the second most sacks in the league (11).

Other Great Performers

J. Tuck ARI ($$$) 3 TCK, 2 TFL
C. Okonkwo SJS ($$) 5 TCK, 1 TFL
K. Hendrix BAL ($ x5) 2 TCK, 1 SCK
F. Wozy COL ($ x5) 4 TCK, 1 TFL
Tuck earned his third spot of the season, and did so by recording 3 tackles and, shockingly, his first 2 tackles for loss of the season. Okonkwo earned his second consecutive spot with 5 tackles and 1 sack. Hendrix and Wozy both earned their league leading fifth appearance by finishing with 6 points apiece.

Defensive Tackle Top Performers

G. Clegane OCO ($$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Last week I said to expect to see more of this man and, luckily, he didn’t make a liar out of me. With 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack, Clegane was able to earn his second appearance on our list, and the top spot for defensive tackles. Clegane and Wright Jr. have really breathed some life into what was, for the longest time, an after-thought in Orange County… their defense. The Otters head to Colorado next week to face a winless Yeti squad in an attempt to increase their record to 4-2.

D. Miller SJS ($ x5) 5 TCK, 1 SCK
Making his eighteenth appearance in nineteen weeks, Miller is the face of the SaberCats defense. His 5 tackles and 1 sack put him on pace to finish the season with 14 sacks, tied for the second most among defensive tackles. Yet another vastly different defense from last year, many expected the SaberCats defense to be a massive improvement. Unfortunately, they are currently ranked 8th in yards allowed, but seem to be employing the bend, don’t break strategy, as they are third in points allowed. They’ll face a Liberty squad next week that is the second lowest scoring team in the NSFL.

B. Metas BAL ($$$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL
Metas finished the week with 4 tackles and 1 tackle for loss, and despite this being his third time on our list, that would be his first tackle for loss of the season. In his defense, the leader of tackles for loss among defensive tackles only has 2, so he isn’t far off. Where Metas has succeeded, however, was in his ability to plug gaps. He has made it exceedingly difficult for opposing running backs to create any form of a cutback, and is a big reason the Hawks allow the least yards per game of any team in the NSFL. The Hawks head to Las Vegas next week to face a vastly improved Legion run game.

R. Sandoval BAL ($ x5) 2 TCK, 1 SCK
The other half of the Hawks interior line, Sandoval had a relatively quiet game, but was able to notch a sack in the second half and claim his spot on our list. That one sack keeps him on pace with linebacking stud Ernston, however, in the race for the sack crown as they are tied at 7 on the season. Sandoval currently has a 2-sack lead on next 2 defensive linemen, King and Miller. Sandoval is headed to the Vegas desert next week where first year quarterback Wallace Stone has already show to be a massive improvement over Josh Bercovici.

Other Great Performers

E. Kamaka PHI ($$$) 5 TCK
C. Chambers III SJS ($$) 5 TCK
Despite not recoding a sack or tackle for loss, both Kamaka and Chambers were still able to eke there way on our list with 5 tackles a piece, proving that defensive tackles can be team players too. No other defensive tackle was able to reach the minimum of 5 points.

Team Appearances After Week 5*

Baltimore: 15 (+3)
Arizona: 11 (+2)
San Jose: 9 (+3)
Orange County: 8 (+2)
Colorado: 6 (+1)
Philadelphia: 5 (+2)
Las Vegas: 4
Yellowknife: 3

Baltimore maintains their top spot was able to increase their lead to 4, while Arizona and San Jose stand pat at #2 and #3, respectively. Orange County and Colorado hold fast while Philadelphia is able to jump Las Vegas and Yellowknife out of the basement and into the sixth spot. Neither Las Vegas, nor Yellowknife are represented on our list this week. This marks third time Yellowknife has failed to have a player qualify and the second time for Las Vegas.

Interesting note, of the 4 players who finished Season 3 with 20+ sacks, there are currently no players on pace to finish as such:
King: 14
Miller: 14
Bjornsson: 6
Tuck: 8

At this point last season, however, these players were on pace to finish as such:
King: 18
Miller: 25
Bjornsson: 36
Tuck: 31

A far cry from last season and a very welcomed change, indeed. As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below. Be on the lookout for a guest writer for week 6!

*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole, just how many times a player from that team has appeared on our list.
