The Carlito Crush Diaries
Entry #7 – The Preseason

Dear Diary,
So that was it. The preseason has come and gone. What a rush it was! After spending countless nights in the offseason pouring over the game plan and the playbook, it was finally time to view the fruits of our labor. I was a bit nervous for sure, considering the entire team was changing over its strategies from the season before. The GMs made some bold trades that brought us a new QB and RB to Portland. And of course we’re adding John Wachter and I to the receiving squad. We had a lot of high hopes going into the preseason, and I’d say we knocked this out of the park by a mile.
Now, I won’t lie, the schedule gods blessed us for the preseason, and we were given four home games to work on things with. Not having to travel was huge for us. We killed it. We went 4-0 with wins over San Antonio (the defending champs), Chicago, Kansas City, and Tijuana. The first game was a nailbiter by all accounts. We squeaked by San Antonio 12-10. It was a hard fought game for sure. I ended up doing okay as I grabbed 8 receptions, but I only got 35 yards on them. The Marshals played excellent defense, and every time I caught the ball there was a defender on me right away, if there wasn’t one on me already.
Game two was a bit more fun. Chicago came to town and we kicked them all over the place. We won this game 47-7. I had 6 more catches, but again could only muster 31 yards. I have to learn how to separate myself a bit better from these linebackers that are draped all over me. The real star of this contest was Johnny Wachter though. My man had 9 catches for 114 yards and 3 touchdowns. That’s insane. He really gave the league a wake up call with this game, and put opposing cornerbacks on notice. That’s why he was drafted 2 overall. What a game.
Game three gave us Kansas City, and we gave them an ass beating too. Our defense was tremendous and we walked away with a 37-0 victory. The first (and therefore game winning) points? A Carlito Crush 4 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter! I scored! I was so happy to finally get in the end zone. I had 11 catches this game, which was awesome. But again, I could only get 48 yards! My YAC is garbage for sure. I think the game plan really needs to be tweaked a bit. The team is using me a bit more as a blocker than a receiving threat. I’m not sure if that’s what we should be doing. But I’m not frustrated. How could I be? I have 25 catches in three games so far at this point. I’m getting work done, and what’s more, we’re winning.
Game four, Tijuana came to town. They gave us a really good fight. We ended up winning this game 23-17. I didn’t have the best game, only going for 4 receptions for 41 yards. Not much else to say about that one.
I can’t have much to complain about. The team went 4-0, you know? Personally, I was 29 receptions for 155 yards and touchdown. That’s a lot of catches with not a lot of yards. I need to work on my speed and agility for this season so I can start to make more of an impact. But right now, things are looking good for the Pythons, that’s for sure. Next up: the games that matter. I’ll be ready!
