Week 4 Thoughts
With our first regular season win on our record, we got to head home to Portland to play the Tijuana Luchadores. I was super excited to see this team play in the preseason and I’m even more excited to play against them. Their linebacker group looks real scary and I think Elvin Enchant(@ElvinEnchant) and Brian Mills (@PaytonM34) will be absolutely powerhouses by the time the season is through. I actually had a chance to speak with both of them right before the DSFL draft when we were waiting to be called. They are nicest guys you’d ever meet for how big and intimidating they are. I was happy to see them both get drafted by the Luchadores. I don’t even know how all the other teams passed either of them up.

Before week 4, there was some drama surrounding both teams’ quarterbacks and I was stunned to see some of the comments between Roenick and Asipi Jr. I won’t go into those details because this is a PG rated blog and I’m trying to get those Christian Mingle girls. Anyways, there were some heated exchanges between the 2 players on Twitter so the intensity of this game was turned up ‘100’ as Bobby would say.

To say this game was a nail biter is an understatement. We got a field goal in the first quarter and the defense held their star runningbacks Spinelli and Bot well, but they really got going in the second quarter and shot out to a 10-3 lead. Roenick was able to find McPoyal for a 17 yard pass and we looked good going into the second half. When we went back to the locker room our coaches said we needed to keep up the pressure on defense and make sure that Asipi Jr. felt our presence on every play. Tijuana has a great offensive line so this wasn’t an easy feat by any means. I think we all did our part on defense to really hold the Luchadores run game. Parker had 7 tackles, Retro racked up 5 tackles with 2 tackles for loss and a sack, and Collins and I got 2 tackles each. Not crazy numbers, but hey, we all did what we could to hold the Luchadores to 22 rushing attempts and 70 rushing yards. We knew we had to stop the run game and I think we did a great job considering how young the team is. Unfortunately for Tijuana, their offense was only on the field for about 25 minutes and you could see their defense get winded down the last minutes of the game. We picked up the 2 point conversion off Uchiha’s touchdown to put us up 1 score and Tijuana struggled to make anything happen in the fourth quarter to seal the game for us.
Remember how I said that Tijuana’s new linebackers were scary? Mills had 12 tackles and 1 tackle for loss while Enchant had 8 tackles and a pass deflection. These guys are the heart and soul of the defense and boy was it hard for Goose and Gore to find their rhythm in the run game. You have to respect guys like them and especially since they are defensive players like myself.

We’re now 2-2 and still hopeful of chasing the famous 11-3 record set by our predecessors in S2. If we can keep up the momentum heading into week 5, I think we’ll be on track to win a lot of games. Still hopeful that we’ll win the Ultimini again despite some of our struggles. 2 and 2 Portland! We’re off to a good start!
