With the DSFL and NSFL drafts just around the corner, new players are far from rare. So, what makes DSFL rookie wide receiver Howard Miller so special?

The Player
Howard Miller is a 20-year-old wide receiver out of Northern Illinois. At 6'3", 220lbs, he functions best as a possession receiver, and is almost as difficult to defend as he is to overthrow. He made a name for himself in college through his almost unnatural ability to go up and get the ball. The way he appeared to float in the air earned him the nickname 'Hover'. But make no mistake, he is just as liable to beat you with his speed and quickness as he is with his size. He is truly a complete receiver, and will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in both the DSFL and NSFL.

The Manager
Ben Longshaw was an offensive lineman who started his NSFL career in the league's inaugural season. After being relatively unknown in the leadup to the draft, he worked tirelessly to impress scouts and GMs and improve his draft standing. He was successful, too. Longshaw was drafted in the early rounds by the San Jose SaberCats, and was one of the first offensive linemen off the board.

After reaching dizzying heights riding his skyrocketing draft stocks, Longshaw's first season in the NSFL was a frustrating, disappointing crash back down to earth. He was a middle-of-the-pack performer, not fulfilling his potential or meeting the expectations set by his high draft position. To make matters worse, the SaberCats finished the year with a 4-10 record. It was far from a season to remember.

Although his second season was a renaissance, and saw him voted into the Pro Bowl, the damage had already been done. By that point in his career, Longshaw was merely going through the motions -- a testament to how good he could have been. In the seasons that followed he dropped quickly out of relevance (and the NSFL), and spent his final years as a pro languishing in the DSFL before finally announcing his retirement at the end of the league's fifth season.

The Combination
While some might question the notion that having Longshaw as his manager raises Miller's draft stocks, there are some undeniable facts that need to be considered:
  • 1. Longshaw knows how to get drafted high
  • 2. Longshaw made the Pro Bowl
  • 3. Longshaw has seen it all in both the NSFL and DSFL
Longshaw knows what it takes to stand out in the NSFL, as evidenced by his rise from obscurity leading up to the inaugural league draft. He was also an elite offensive talent in the league, however brief it may have been. Longshaw has insight into what makes a player worthy of Pro Bowl selection, something he is no doubt sharing with his rookie protégé. Finally, Longshaw has bounced around a few teams in both the NSFL and the DSFL, and knows what it's like to play at every level. This is an important consideration now that Miller is required to prove his worth at the lower level before being drafted into a top-tier team.

The Conclusion
Howard Miller is a uniquely gifted young athlete with all the potential in the world. Ben Longshaw is a seasoned veteran who knows both what it takes to make it and break it in the NSFL. Together, they form an intriguing duo that will undeniably turn heads as the DSFL draft draws nearer.

Despite what he was able to achieve in a short career in the league, and despite his dejection toward the end, Longshaw still has aspirations of being involved in a championship-winning team. Perhaps more importantly, he still hopes that team will be the San Jose SaberCats, and he feels that Howard Miller is the player that can help make it happen.

But the question remains: can you trust a player associated with Ben Longshaw?

Howard Miller is a 100% first round draft pick. I have no doubts that he'll be the star receiver for the team that drafts him! I'm sad that I won't be able to continue my streak of drafting stud WRs.

I thought so, but wasn't 100% sure. Wanted to stay as accurate as possible Smile)
