*Fitz v Biz - kckolbe - 06-15-2018

Another 4 weeks of DSFL are down, and it’s time to look at everyone’s favorite minor-league QB rivalry (by process of elimination), Fitz v Biz!

Week 7
San Antonio @ Portland
Throwing a pick six in the opening quarter isn’t exactly an ideal start to a game, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that the Fitzpatrick and the Marshals started off trailing and just couldn’t get back in the game. Fun fact: all four games this week for the Marshals start with them behind. After the pick six, though, he actually had a solid game, with 284 yards on 35 attempts plus 18 more on the ground. He fumbled once, but also found the end zone, finishing with a TANY/A of 5.52, his best game this week.

Palm Beach @ Kansas City
Palm Beach is a frustrating team to play against, as Showbiz learned with his first experience in having his defense carry him to a win. He only connected on 13 of his 32 attempts, his lowest mark of the season. On top of that, he only totaled 106 yards, his second-lowest average yards per completion. Factor in 2 sacks and Showbiz finished with only 96 total yards. Fortunately, his opponent threw three INTs, allowing the Coyotes to manage a win as Showbiz finished with a TANY/A of 2.74, his worst since week 4.

Week 8
Kansas City @ San Antonio
Round 2. The first time, both QBs played very poor games, but Gustity (yeah, that’s his name now) was the better passer, leading his team to a win. This time, Showbiz was the MUCH better passer. The biggest difference was pocket awareness. In week 5, he was sacked 6 times, which dropped to just 3 times week 8. He failed to find the end zone, but he also avoided giving up sacks and fumbles, which he has been phenomenal at all year. He completed 16 of 21 passes, his best of the season, for 175 yards, his second best average. He finished with a TANY/A of 6.41, the best either QB has posted all season.

Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, barely completed over 50% of his passes, threw one INT, and fumbled once…and somehow the Marshals still won. What’s really odd is that the Coyotes also had the better rushing game. Fortunately for Fitz, most of his passing yards came in big chunks, allowing the Marshals to get one more score for their efforts. It took five minutes of overtime for the Marshals to get the win, and Fitzpatrick finished with a TANY/A of 3.86, his lowest this week.

Week 9
Palm Beach @ San Antonio
Palm Beach has been a nightmare matchup for Fitz all season, but this time, the game seemed not just a loss, but a blowout. Palm Beach led 21-0 after just ten and a half minutes of play, which included a lost fumble from Fitzpatrick. After being down 21 points, Fitz then threw two interceptions, both of which ended up resulting in Solar Bear Touchdowns. He only completed 50% of his passes. That said, San Antonio won. Thanks to 2 pick sixes by San Antonio and a strangely impressive 240 yards and 3 TDs on only 19 completions, the Marshals somehow turned this into a win. Fitz finished with a slightly above average TANY/A of 4.35, largely due to avoiding being sacked for the first game of his post-draft career.

Tijuana @ Kansas City
While not something he will likely want to keep in his career scrapbook, this was Showbiz’s first game to throw an interception without also throwing a touchdown. While not a horrible game, Showbiz’s 194 yards and 0 TDs was barely enough for his team to get the win. He finished with a TANY/A of 3.38.

Week 10
San Antonio @ Norfolk
Fitzpatrick raised his streak of consecutive games with 1 or more interceptions to 7, and has a second consecutive game of negative rushing yards. However, he did manage 216 yards and a TD on 32 attempts, and only got sacked once, a huge improvement over the 3 per week he started out with. He finished with a TANY/A of 4.89, his best this week.

Portland @ Kansas City
Full disclosure: Week 8 on the road against San Antonio was Showbiz’s best game by TANY/A, but I think this was his most brag-worthy game. You can only get so excited by a 0 TD, sub-200 yard game. However, a 243 yard game with 3 TDs is a lot more impressive. His 248 total yards beats his old record of 225 easily, and he did it with TEN fewer plays. Add in the fact that this was against a conference rival as well, and you have a truly great performance. He finished with a TANY/A of 6.12, his second-best, and better than Fitzpatrick’s worst game.

After 10 games each, here’s how both QBs look.

Showbiz has 179 completions on 333 attempts for 1749 yards, plus 30 yards and 1 TD on 17 rushes with 0 fumbles. He’s been sacked 29 times for 188 yards lost, for a total of 1591 yards on 379 plays for 4.2 yards/play. He’s thrown 8 TDs against 5 INTs. Final TANY/A of 4.08.
Fitzpatrick has 187 completions on 338 attempts for 2107 yards, plus 135 yards on 48 rushes with 3 fumbles. He’s been sacked 25 times for 177 yards lost, for a total of 2065 yards on 411 plays for 5.02 yards/play. He’s thrown 11 TDs against 12 INTs. Final TANY/A of 4.08.

I have to admit that I was really surprised by these results. At a glance, Showbiz seemed the far better QB this week, with two games better than any Fitz has played. How does the QB with 5 interceptions and 3 fumbles end up gaining on a QB with 2 interceptions and 0 fumbles? The answer is yards. 974 yards on 174 plays (5.50) over 677 yards on 145 plays (4.67) allows room for a lot of mistakes, and a few extra TDs doesn’t hurt either.

Both QBs now sit on top of their respective conferences with at least a one game lead, making the odds of an Ultimini matchup even more likely than last week. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see it.
