Evidence of Orange Causing Interceptions

Orange has long been a color associated with making your presence known. Hunters wear bright orange to identify themselves to other hunters in forest environments. It is common amongst birds and frogs and such as a warning sign to predators. But what if science is wrong? What if orange simply makes you so distracting that whoever sees you simply has to look away? The evidence supporting that theory is insurmountable in my opinion.

Here is an example of how the color orange created an interception for Orange County in their playoff game against the Second Line. We see in the image below that one wide receiver has created roughly ten yards of separation from the man responsible for covering him. Meanwhile another has created somewhere between 0 and 2 yards. The receiver at the bottom of the picture has left enough space between himself and his man for the orange to be visible behind him. The receiver at the top of the picture has completely obscured his defender’s orange from the quarterback’s view.

This next image shows the result of this interaction. As the play develops, the quarterback also has his vision obscured by the oncoming pass rush. He can no longer see his receivers because of the distracting orange and is thus forced to throw the ball to the last purple he can remember seeing – the receiver who obscured his defender’s orange. Thus, he targets that player even though the receiver at the bottom of the screen still has 5 yards of separation from his man.

Now let’s see how this effect manifests itself over the course of entire seasons, focusing particularly on seasons 7 and 8. You’ll notice that the team with “Orange” in its very name has finished first and second in interceptions in each of the last two seasons.
