LECAVALIER NSFL BOUND
June 3rd, 2017 | By DAN BRIDGE

TUCSON, Arizona — The NSFL Draft as concluded and several athletes journeys are just beginning while another one is ending.

The U of A’s Ryan Lecavalier is about to embark on his junior season with the Wildcats. Although, it took some time to figure out exactly what he wanted to do in the post-season – he’s decided to make the jump to the NSFL (a move he naturally wasn’t eyeing in the beginning, but became one he eventually came to terms with on his own.) From sitting down and speaking to him, he naturally had the fear of a twenty-year-old who’s nearing the end of his colligated career. A lot of what he was worried about might appear to be simple on the surface, however, it was supremely rooted in wanting to make the best decision for his family. Becoming a professional athlete is a big deal, it’s an even bigger deal when you’ve already seen the ramifications of an inaugural draft (one of which, you weren’t apart of) and none of the players have played a single down yet for their respective football teams.

The most interesting thing is that fear that’s so well settled in the pit of his stomach right now will serve his explosiveness—he’s going to want to use it, of course. All in hopes of stretching the field for the team he’s drafted to play for. It’s hard to say that he’s going to be a “game changing” talent – there were too many well-received wide outs that were drafted during the draft. One thing’s for certain, you can count on him being one of the future prospects if all goes according to plan during the development phase. It’s going to take a lot from him and those coaches that surround him. It’s going to be a daunting task, but turning him from a college athlete to a pro isn’t out of the realm of possibility. His skill set is pretty raw for what Arizona’s brass as been using him for, though if there came a coach or two in the NSFL who could help refine him he should turn to gold.

Take his previous season for example—one of his weaknesses is at a prime 6’2’’ 220 lbs. he’s a little slow and with the right speed training coaches backing him, he should turn into a force to be reckoned with off the line. He’s shown his playmaking ability in weird spurts – he’s burned quite a few people off the line, but it’s too soon for teams to consider him a moving part of their schemes in terms of the deep ball. On top of that he’s shown two strengths that are pretty much going to serve him well, he has a knack for keeping the ball secure as possible as he when catching. His Quarterback last season threw several passes that looked to be unreachable; he came down with them, naturally. Not to mention he’s got high level IQ for football that’s best served being further molded by some of the NSFL’s best coaches.

There have been rumors that are several NSFL insiders are already labeling him a Red Zone Threat. You can already come to the conclusion as to why that is, nevertheless, it’s his shortcomings make it incredibly hard for him to live up to the label this early on. Right now it’s hard to say where he’d land if the next NSFL draft happened today – what’s more compelling is his drive and determination is healthy enough for those tough and drawn out position battles some of the NSFL’s teams might find themselves having before pre-season.

One thing he’s got going for him is something similar to most others who decide to make a career of playing football at a professional level. Where the challenge lies in terms of the beginning of his career is how well he adapts to the pressures of being in a league as fast paced as the NSFL. There are a lot of criticisms that can be made at this time about his skill set and how he plays the game – it’s just better left to be held off until he’s in front of coaches competing at the combine.

There’s a lot of time in between him wrapping up his college career and the pre-season. There’s a lot that can change in that amount of time for better or worse. What’s for certain is that Ryan Lecavalier is ending one journey and starting another and we’re all just along for the ride. It’s up to him and his support system to forge the type of career he wants to have, and he’s got a very good shot at turning into the type of player that people hold in high regard.
