Vincent Sharpei- Offensive Lineman- 4th Overall (Sabercats 1st selection)
The San Jose Sabercats’ 1st selection of the season 2 draft was Vincent Sharpei. An offensive lineman, Sharpei’s player agency is very well known among the sim league world. In the short amount of time that he has been in the NSFL, Sharpei has been extremely active and can be seen and heard in the media almost on a daily basis. Having your name out there that often is a big deal in this league and Sharpei has certainly made the most of it. Offensive line was a huge issue for the ‘Cats last season, totaling one of the fewest pancake amounts in the league. Prior to the draft San Jose only had one offensive lineman left in Ben Longshaw. Hopefully with the addition of Sharpei, the ‘Cats can start over with their offensive line and give rookie Christian Adams some much needed help.
Jordan Yates- Offensive Lineman- 11th overall (Sabercats 2nd selection)
Just 7 picks later, San Jose selected yet another offensive lineman. Luckily for them, this draft was chalk full of lineman, and good ones at that. Yates had a good showing at the draft combine, running the 2nd fastest 40 yard dash time (5.28) and the 2nd fastest cone time (7.22). However, he didn’t do well on the Wonderlic test and his strength is suspect right now as he only did 23 reps on the bench press. Yates has great blocking ability, however, and will be his best contribution to the Cats’ offense. Hopefully Jordan gets his practice hours up, because for a guy getting drafted this high, he definitely has a low amount of TPE compared to the rest of the field.
Enchilada Charlton- Defensive End- 19th overall (Sabercats 3rd selection)
Charlton is my pick for the Sabercats’ biggest steal of the draft. San Jose’s defense ranked 5th in total tackles last season and defensive end/defensive tackle was a big reason for the low amount. His player agency is another well-known agency, which definitely gives San Jose a lot of comfort in drafting him. He has a very high intelligence for the game, which will allow him to easily pick up the defensive scheme come pre-season. He already has a high tackling rate as well as decent strength. I have no doubt in my mind Enchilada will be in the talks for Defensive Rookie of the Year award this year and will eventually win Defensive Player of the Year as well.
Xavier Newman- Cornerback- 37th overall (Sabercats 4th selection)
Unlike Sharpei and Charlton, Newman doesn’t have an elite player agency. A relative unknown, Newman has been at the practice facility early and often for San Jose. Because of the lack of defensive players on the squad, Xavier will look to be either the number one or number two cornerback for San Jose right off the bat. In order to succeed however, Newman will need to stay consistent and not slack on the practice field, which is always a huge concern for GM’s when it comes to new draft prospects. Newman also had a great draft combine, running the fastest shuttle time as well as having one of the best reps for bench press and the highest Wonderlic score among cornerbacks.
Chibdubem Okonkwo- Defensive End- 43rd overall (Sabercats 5th selection)
Okonkwo is the 2nd defensive end selected by San Jose. He has over 65 practice hours logged in already, but hasn’t practiced much over the last couple of weeks. Hopefully that changes because he certainly has a bright future ahead of him. His strength is certainly his best feature as that has been his primary attribute he’s focused on. He’s also one of the faster ends in the draft which will definitely help the ‘Cats get more sacks compared to last season where they struggled.
Christian Adams- Quarterback- 50th overall (Sabercats 6th selection)
Adams looks to be the quarterback of the future for the Sabrecats…hopefully. They’ve had a lot of issues at this position already, and we’ve only played one season so far. Jamis Christ was taken in the expansion draft which left San Jose with just Ethan Hunt. Now, Hunt has a lot of practice hours accumulated but he has made it clear he does not want to be a Sabrecat. Given the circumstances, Adams should be the starter for San Jose this season, and hopefully it works out. Adams already has 70 practice hours and has a 70/70 rating for his arm and accuracy. Hopefully this time, San Jose lucks out and gets a QB of the future.
Denzel Diaz- Runningback- 57th overall (Sabercats 7th selection)
Diaz is another sleeper that I’m surprised fell this far to San Jose. Despite most of the teams in the league having a starting back, Diaz would have been helpful for any team on the goal line at least. Diaz will be the back up for San Jose for now, and not much is known as to what kind of playing time he will get. However, at the very least I expect him to give Durden the rest he needs and score deep on the opponents’ goal line. Diaz has been very vocal which is key to activity and getting those practice hours done.
Noah Parker- Linebacker- 59th overall (Sabercats 8th selection)
San Jose had another pick just 2 picks later, and used it for season one player Noah Parker. Parker has more than 85 practice hours which is huge for a guy going this late in the draft. Unfortunately for San Jose, he hasn’t been overly active as of late, but maybe their GM or one of Parker’s teammates can get him to come back and practice again. He’s definitely better than nothing, so hopefully he can help out the struggling defense once again.
Braden Sharp- Offensive Lineman- 67th overall (Sabercats 9th selection)
To round up their new offensive line, the Sabercats select Braden Sharp with their 9th round pick. Ironically, Sharp literally just came out of inactivity and has just popped his head up in the Sabercats locker room. He could turn into the biggest steal of the draft if he actually puts in practice hours at least 1 time a week. At just 290 lbs, he’s a smaller lineman, but he has big time strength and pretty decent run and pass blocking as well.
